Kwara State Government Directs Contractors Back to Site

Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed has directed contractors handling various projects in the State to return to sites immediately.

 

Governor Ahmed who gave the directive in Ilorin at the monthly Stakeholders Meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said projects in the areas of Energy, water, road construction, health and education would be completed as the state revenues improve.

 

He said his government places high premium on quality infrastructure for socio-economic development, promising not to relent in facilitating the economic growth of the State.

 

Governor Ahmed said N5 Million each had been earmarked to carry out special infrastructural intervention projects in each of the 193 wards in the State, promising to begin another round of youth and women empowerment programmes, next week to engage women and youths and also stimulate the state economy.

 

Speaking on the delay in the payment of Local Government workers and Basic Education teachers, Governor Ahmed explained that his government had assisted in the payment of their July salaries with the disbursement of N160million naira to local government councils.

 

Governor Ahmed assured the people of the state that worst times were over with improved internally generated revenues and federal allocations, promising to make the state more conducive for all residents.

 

Earlier in his remarks, the State Chairman of APC, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani had explained that the monthly interactive forum was to intimate their members about developments at the state and the national levels.

 

The meeting had in attendance members of the State Executive Council, Local Government Chairmen, APC leaders and elders, representatives of APC in all the 193 wards, youths and women associations in the State.

Fuel Scarcity: El-Rufai Directs Security Agents To Arrest Petrol Hawkers

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Tuesday directed security men to enforce the ban on the hawking of petroleum products in the state as part of efforts to contain the scarcity of the products.

The directive was contained in a statement issued in Kaduna by Mr Samuel Aruwan, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity. According to the statement, filling stations across the state would no longer dispense the products in Jerry cans and related containers. The statement said that the ban was part of the decisions taken during Tuesday’s state Security Council meeting. It said that security agencies had been directed to enforce the ban in accordance with the Kaduna State Petroleum Products (Anti-Hoarding and Adulteration) Law of 1992.

The statement said that the ban prohibited sales of petroleum products in Jerry cans throughout the 23 local government areas of the state by hawkers. “This law empowers the task force to ensure that petroleum product were sold in a safe manner, with stiff penalty on violators.

“Council based its decision on legal and security considerations, compounded by the environmental hazard petroleum products in Jerry cans can cause,” it stated. The government also advised the public to help uphold and enforce the ban to ensure that fuel was only dispensed at filling stations.

Senate Directs NNPC, Others To Harmonise Subsidy Claims

The Senate on Monday directed the Ministry of Petroleum, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and other relevant stakeholders to harmonise subsidy claims for October to December 2015.

Sen. Danjuma Goje, Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, gave the directive during public hearing to consider the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for N465 billion supplementary budget.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that out of the N465 billion, N413 billion is for payment of subsidy from January to September 2015.

Goje also asked the NNPC to furnish the committee with the breakdown of the amount to be paid to each of the independent marketers.

He queried why the supplementary budget did not include funds for payment of subsidy for the last quarter of 2015.

He said that the nation could not risk another scarcity of petroleum products due to non-payment for the months.

The chairman expressed displeasure at the seeming lack of synergy between the relevant stakeholders and directed them to go back and harmonise their figures and submit same not later than 3p.m. on Monday.

Oil & Gas: Buhari Directs NNPC to Work with Indigenous Companies

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured indigenous companies operating in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector of the full support and protection of his administration.

At a meeting Wednesday with members of the Independent Petroleum Producers Association in the Presidential Villa,  Buhari commended the determination to increase the participation of Nigerians in the country’s oil industry and promised to do all within his powers to address the challenges which they currently face.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the president had also directed the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to work more closely with the indigenous oil producers to resolve the problems which members of the group said were affecting their operations.

The president said: “We have the manpower for a more effective participation in our oil industry. We will give you all possible  encouragement. You certainly won’t be ignored under my leadership.”

The association comprises about  20 Nigerian companies operating mainly on onshore fields.

Buhari Directs Governors To Decongest Prisons

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed state governors across the country to ensure the reduction of the number of prison inmates in their various states.

Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir el-Rufai, who disclosed this while on a working visit to the Kaduna convict prison, said the president’s directive was in the spirit of decongesting the prisons across the country.

El-Rufai said, “Our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, has directed all governors to visit prisons and ensure that we reduce to the barest minimum those that have spent many years awaiting trial in our courts.

“It is injustice for a person to be kept for a long time in the name of awaiting trial. This is why President Buhari directed all governors to undertake such visits so that, working together with the Ministry of Justices and the Prison authorities, we’ll ensure we do something about it.”

He assured that the state government, despite its financial challenges, would do its best to ensure that the people prison for wrong reasons and are awaiting trial get justice.

Receiving the governor, the state controller of prison, Mr. Abubakar Garba, noted that the convict prison, established in 1915 with the capacity of 547, is now housing over 1,000 inmates.

Disclosing that about 114 inmates were condemned criminals, with 11 of them citizens of Kaduna State, he appealed to the governor to commute the death sentences of 11 inmates of Kaduna State origin to life imprisonment. He also revealed that the prison had only two functional vans for conveying about 800 awaiting trial inmates, which he said, portends danger to people of the state.
