Sambisa forest to host 2017 Army Championship

The Nigerian Army has disclosed that the captured Sambisa Forest in Borno State will host the 2017 Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship, NASAC 2017.

This disclosure was made known by Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday.

Usman said the Nigerian Army Engineers, NAE Corps has mobilized to site and commenced access roads clearance and construction of range and other facilities.

This is coming after the forest, which has served as the fortress of the dreaded Boko Haram sect for several years was reportedly captured by the Nigerian Army.

The convener of the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG group, Oby Ezekwesili, has, however, said that the capture of Boko Haram’s stronghold, Camp Zairo by the military in December last year, was not equal to capturing the dreaded Sambisa forest.

Nigeria Withdraws From Basketball Championships

The FIBA Africa Zone 3 U-18 Championship for Boys and Girls scheduled to commence from July 2 to July 9 in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, will be held without Nigeria.

FIBA’s Administrative Secretary, Joe Apu, said in a statement on Friday in Lagos that the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) had withdrawn from the competition.

According to the statement, the competition is the qualifiers for the FIBA Africa U-18 Championships scheduled for Kigali, Rwanda in October. It said the winners and runners-up in Rwanda are to represent Africa at the 2017 World U-19 Championships for Men and Women.

“FIBA Africa Zone 3 was informed of Nigeria’s withdrawal via an email on June 27, five days to the commencement of the championships in Cotonou.

“No reason was given for the country’s withdrawal,’’ the statement said.

It added that the FIBA Africa Zone 3 President, retired Col. Sam Ahmedu, had confirmed the development.

The statement also quoted Ahmedu as saying: “It is indeed a sad development that Nigeria which is one of the top countries in the zone is withdrawing from the tournament.

“This will no doubt take some shine off the championships as it also denies Nigerian youth players the opportunity of competing with their peers at this level.

“It is coming on the heels of the recent visa imbroglio which denied the national U-17 girls team travelling to Spain for the World Championship.

“This means that Nigerian youths will not be participating in any international tournament this year,’’ the statement quoted Ahmedu as saying.

It noted that arrangements had been concluded for the Zone 3 qualifiers holding at the Halle des Arts, Cotonou, Republic of Benin on July 2.

Armwrestling Championships To Hold Dec. 12 In Lagos

The Nigerian Armwrestling Federation (NWAF) on Thursday said plans had been concluded to host the maiden Rafiu Ladipo Armwrestling Open Championships.

The Federation’s President, Olatunji Jackson, told newsmen in Lagos that the one-day Championship would hold at the National Stadium, Lagos. He said the aim of the event was to assess the skill level of the current set of armwrestlers in the country.

“It is the maiden edition and the sponsor is working with the federation. He has the interest of the sport at heart since the formation of the federation last year.

“We want to use it as a test run on our armwrestlers. To know the abilities of our players, areas to work on and ways forward for the sport,” he said.

It will be recalled that the federation was formed in 2014 and had since participated in an international competition.

They were at the 37th World Armwrestling Championships in Malaysia from Sept. 25 to Oct. 4.

Jackson said that the five weight category event would be competed for at the one day championship.

Men and women athletes will be taking part in five events. They are the 35,55,60,70 and 100kg categories.

“We have room to accommodate 150 arm wrestlers for the competition,” he said.

According to Jackson, the registration for the event had commenced at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

“Registration has started and it will be open till the morning of the competition. This will be so in other to accommodate as many participants as possible.

“I also don’t want them to indulge in last minute registrations because this can distrupt the smooth running of the programme,” Jackson added.
