BREAKING: Boko Haram sets fire on village near Chibok.

Boko Haram has burnt down a village neighbouring the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok where the group kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls two years ago, local residents said Wednesday.

A group of Boko Haram gunmen invaded Goptari, 10 kilometres from Chibok, late Tuesday and set it on fire after looting food supplies and livestock.

The attack underscores the continued threat of Boko Haram in Nigeria’s volatile northeast, where the military is still battling for control despite making gains against the insurgents over the past year.

“They attacked the village around 8:00 pm (1900GMT), firing heavy guns which made people flee into the bush,” Samson Bulus from nearby Kautikeri village told AFP.

“The Boko Haram raiders looted homes and shops, taking along food supplies and livestock before burning the entire village,” he said.

Luka Damina, another Kautikeri resident said troops in Chibok engaged the attackers in gun battle but were subdued by the insurgents.

“The Boko Haram fighters overpowered the soldiers and seized a van with a machine gun mounted on the deck from the soldiers,” he said.

Witnesses, including a local chief, said a soldier was wounded during the shootout.

The attack came two days after a raid on nearby Kallali village where the Islamists looted and burnt homes, a local chief told AFP.

Boko Haram has waged a seven-year insurgency against the Nigerian state that has claimed at least 20,000 lives and spilled across the country’s borders.

Aided by troops from neighbouring countries, the Nigerian military has recaptured swathes of territory from the Islamists since early 2015.

But Boko Haram has carried out sporadic attacks on remote villages in the restive region.

Last month eight people were killed outside a church in a village 30 kilometres east of Chibok. In August, 10 people were killed in another attack on nearby Kubrivu village.

Angry mob set 2 women ablaze over alleged acts of lesbianism in Makurdi

Two ladies were on Thursday set ablaze by angry mob at the ‘Owner’s Occupier area’ in Makurdi, Benue State for allegedly involving themselves in acts of lesbianism.

According to the report making the round on social media, the victims were caught in the act and were stripped naked, beaten and set ablaze on the street by residents of the area.

However, the Benue State Police Command has denied knowledge of the report, saying that several efforts to get the details of the report had proved abortive.

Speaking with DAILY POST on Thursday evening, the Benue State Police PRO, Moses Yamu said, “We have seen the story on social media but report has not been made.

“I still doubt if this happened in Benue. How can such event happen in Makurdi and the police is not informed? Anyway, we shall let the public know once we are done with our investigations.”

11 Houses Burnt, 15 Injured In Cross River Communal Conflict

At least 15 persons have reportedly sustained bullet wounds, while 11 residential buildings were burnt following an alleged invasion of Oyoba village in Wanikade by the people of a neighbouring community, Ihetazi in Wanihem, Ukele North in Yala local government area of Cross River State.

The invasion, which resulted from a boundary dispute, caused the displacement of over 130 persons including women and children.

A visit to the area revealed destruction of foodstuff including yams, rice, garri, economic trees and household property such as sewing machines, electronics, as well as motorcycles and bicycles.

Also destroyed were sources of water such as streams and wells, which were poisoned with chemicals, debris and rocks.

According to him, those who dared to challenge them were shot and wounded while the elderly, children and women were chased away from the village.

He said fifteen persons that sustained bullet wounds were being treated in various hospitals and clinics.

Chief Okoko described the attack as senseless and barbaric, stating that the invaders have lived for ages as brothers and have inter-married.

He said their action was capable of destroying the cordiality between the two communities.

A youth leader, Mr. Mathias Egede described the invasion as an act of war and that the security agents should bring the culprits to book.

He stated that the destruction of homes, yam barns and seed silos in an agrarian community depicted an intention to annihilate the community.

Chief Christopher Okoko of Oyoba, whose property was also destroyed by the invaders narrated that their attackers came on Saturday, January 23 at about three o’clock in the afternoon, when most of the villagers were in the community market about a kilometre away and carried out the wanton destruction.

Man Loses Chrysler Sports Car Just 30 Mins After Buying It To Fire & It’s The Seller’s Fault

A motorist was left devastated after his Chrysler sports car burst into flames and was completely destroyed just half an hour after he bought it. Paul Gregory spent £3,700 on the convertible Crossfire, which he bought from a used-car dealer in Kent.

Just three miles into the 250-mile journey back to his home in Manchester, the car suddenly caught fire. Mr Gregory, 47, tried to put out the blaze with water but was unable to act before the car was totally written off.

The fire service said that the accident was the result of a fault with the fuel supply – but the seller has refused to give Mr Gregory a refund, claiming the fire was an ‘act of God’.

‘I’m depressed with it all,’ said Mr Gregory, a lorry driver. ‘I gave him everything I had. I paid £3,700 in cash and had it for just 35 minutes before it blew up in flames. Now he’s refusing to give me any money back as it’s an “act of God” apparently. To be honest I was lucky to get out of it. If I had made it onto the M25 it could have been much worse.’

The buyer is planning to take Kemsing Cars, where he bought the vehicle, to court if he does not receive a refund within 10 days.

Police Hunt Killers of Suspected Female Suicide Bomber

Police in northeast Nigeria on Wednesday said they were hunting the mob who beat a woman to death and burnt her body after suspecting that she was a suicide bomber.

The woman, identified by her mother as 33-year-old Thabita Haruna, was killed on Sunday in Bauchi after she allegedly refused to undergo a security screening at a city market.

Boko Haram has increasingly used women and young girls as human bombs against so-called “soft targets” such as crowded bus stations and markets.

But Bauchi state police spokesperson Haruna Mohammed said Sunday’s victim was not a bomber. “All our investigations have proved that this woman was mentally sick and had nothing to do with suicide bombing,” he told AFP, without specifying her condition.

Appropriate action

“We as law enforcement agents will not stand by and allow people to take the law into their hands.

“We are continuing with [the] investigation and as soon as the perpetrators of this act are arrested we will take legal action [against] them.”

The woman’s mother, Rahab Haruna, said she hoped the authorities would take “appropriate action”.

“There is law, therefore her assailants should not have taken the law into their hands. They just killed and burnt my daughter,” she added.

She described Thabita as “a normal young woman” who worked as a trader until she became mentally ill, which saw her treated at a psychiatric hospital on and off between 2007 and 2013.

Burnt to death

“She would get an occasional bout of the illness and when that happened she would go wild and destroy things. She would gather household articles and burn them.

“When she got out of the fit she would calm down and became normal and help with domestic chores.

“She left home on Saturday, we didn’t know where she went. We looked for her all over our neighbourhood but we didn’t find her until the next day.

“She ended up in Muda Lawal [market] where she was assaulted, humiliated and burnt to death. Before she was killed they searched her and found on her the identification card of her sister Alheri.”

She was traced back to the family home from the ID card, she added.
