Mauritania Clerics Want ‘Apostasy’ Blogger Executed

A body of Muslim clerics in Mauritania has called for the death sentence to be carried out against a blogger convicted of apostasy in 2014.

Mauritania, an Islamic republic, has not applied a death penalty since 1987.

The Forum of Imams and Ulemas says Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir, 29, should be executed despite the fact that he repented for an article criticising Mauritania’s caste system.

The clerics want him to be killed according to the “law of God”.

The blogger was arrested in January 2014 for an article in which he lashed out at those who use religion as a means of discrimination against members of certain ethnic groups.

The article was later taken down as it was deemed blasphemous towards the Prophet Muhammad.

Mkhaitir then apologised and said he never meant to insult the Prophet.

Mauritania’s Supreme Court can pardon him if it feels his repentance is sincere.

But ahead of the court’s decision on Tuesday, the body of clerics said the blogger should not be shown any mercy.

“We demand that the competent authorities apply the law,” the Forum of Imams and Ulemas was quoted by Reuters as saying in a statement.

“Kill him and bury him in conformity with the law of God,” the statement added.

Blogger In Court Over Adultery Reports On Bank Chief With Genevieve Nnaji

A blogger, Desmond Chima, was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday for allegedly publishing two defamatory stories against United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc Managing Director, Philips Oduoza.

The police said he connived with some persons who are at large to post a story entitled: Randy UBA MD, Philips Oduoza in adultery mess…romances star actress, Genevieve Nnaji.

He was arraigned on two- count charge of cybercrime before Justice Mohammed Yunusa.

The blogger was also alleged to have posted a second with the title: Randy UBA MD, Philips Oduoza’s wife to divorce him over affairs with actress Genevieve.

Police prosecutor, Henry Obiazi, claimed the blogger published the stories knowing them to be false.

According to him, it was for the purpose of annoying Oduoza and causing him ill will and needless anxiety.

Obiazi claimed that Chima violated Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015. Chima pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Justice Yunusa adjourned to November 6 for hearing of his bail application.

Meet the Blogger Who Earns N3m Per Instagram Picture

A personal style blogger has lifted the lid on the lucrative business of bloggers who are paid big bucks by brands to feature certain products, or even phrases, on their Instagram accounts.

Danielle Bernstein, 22, runs the blog We Wore What, and has 992,000 followers on her Instagram.
Currently, her rate card sets the cost of a single piece of sponsored content from $5,000 to $15,000, but she explained to Harper’s Bazaar that this rate can go up or down depending on the number of posts a brand requires, and length of her relationship with the company in question.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; according to Miss Bernstein, when she hits one million

followers, she will be able to charge ‘a good amount more’ for sponsored content.

Indeed, Miss Bernstein is edging towards the top of the new Instagram economy, through which savvy social media stars are translating an ever-increasing tally of followers into a lucrative business, which – if their accounts are considered as ‘bankable’ as Miss Bernstein’s – could earn them millions of dollars a year.

Miss Bernstein explains that the range for Instagram accounts with a few hundred thousand followers is from around $500 to $5,000 per post, but accounts with upwards of six million followers can earn anywhere between $20,000 and $100,000 a shot.

Industry estimates say brands spend more than a $1 billion per year on sponsored Instagram posts, and that figure shows no signs of decreasing any time soon.

Saudi Arabian Blogger May Face Death Penalty For Insulting Islam

A Saudi Arabian blogger was earlier this year sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam which meant that he would be flogged 50 times every Friday for 20 weeks – but his wife has revealed that he could now face the death penalty.

After Raif Badawi’s first beating in Jeddah on January 9 this year, the process was paused when doctors ruled that a week later his scars had not healed sufficiently for him to face another round.

The punishment has since been postponed each week on medical grounds but the government has so far failed to come up with a long term solution, reports UK Mirror.

Yesterday, his wife, Ensaf Haidar, said her country’s criminal courts want him to undergo a retrial for apostasy, which means he could be sentenced to death.

Lord have mercy!!!
