SON to check production of substandard blocks.

Worried about the persistent building collapse in the country, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has resolved to deploy the use of block testing machines to check production of substandard blocks in the country.

The Director-General of SON, Osita Aboloma, explained that block moulders play a very critical role in economic development, saying that the agency is strengthening its collaboration with block moulders in the country by rolling out these machines in large numbers to give block moulders the opportunity to test their blocks while also complying to standards.

The SON boss during a courtesy visit by block moulders to the agency’s operational office in Lagos, said: “This meeting is to keep up the collaboration we have been having with block moulders. We believe their job is very important and we cannot tolerate the incidence of substandard blocks that will lead to building collapse in the country. This menace is a threat to any society, a drain to the economy and danger to the lives of people and properties.

“We have a programme to train the block moulders in the six geographical zones, we have done three, we have three more to complete and in addition to that, we have just commissioned a made-in-Nigeria block testing machine. We are going to collaborate with them to roll out these machines in large numbers to assist them in testing the blocks and complying with standards.

“I have heard about the robust collaboration you have been having with SON, which I commend. In our efforts to diversify the economy from a single product, I came across your organization’s activities and this has given me the strong will to restate my support to the association. The task of building the economy is a collective responsibility.

“The menace of building collapse is very worrying. It is not rocket science to know that the actual people we will work with to address this menace is the block moulders at the grassroots. We are in the process of deploying about 55 locally made block testing machines. This is part of our efforts to increase the patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods as against the imported ones. This will go a long to help your association get the right and quality blocks.”

He however called on block moulders to insist on producing blocks that meet the minimum requirement of the Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) regardless of the current state of the economy, stressing that the value of human life cannot be quantified.

“There is no doubt that the economy is in recession, but at the same time, we must not compromise standards and anybody that falls short of the standards, will have to face the wrath of the law. You need to put more effort in sensitizing your members and collaborate with our field officers to certify the blocks you produce.

“This is going to be a continuous task. We will keep training and retraining people and also sensitize people about complying to standards, because the block moulders play a vital role in national development.

“We are here to support you and if there is another way you need our support, please do not hesitate to say. As you come to register with us, we will create a database so that we can have all the accredited block makers who comply to standards under one umbrella,” he added.

Earlier, the National President, National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria, Rasheed Adebowale, (NABMON) said, “We are here to meet with you to bolster our collaboration with the agency to assist us in producing quality and standard blocks in the country. We believe this synergy is critical to address building collapse in the country.”

“I am so happy with this move by SON to deploy block testing machines, if we have this support from SON, it will go a long way to address the issue of quality. Although, we have a mechanism to check against substandard,” he added.

According to him, the association plays a major role in economic development in terms of employment, employing about 10 million people in the country with a membership base of over 45,000 producing blocks.

The Chairman, National Planning Committee, Block Makers of Nigeria, (NABMON), Segun Banjoko, tasked SON to establish a database of all block makers in the country to check production of sub-standard blocks.

Senate blocks move to summon SSS boss over raids on judges.

The Senate has stood down a proposal to invite the Director General of the State Security Service, Lawan Daura, over the ongoing clampdown on suspected corrupt judges.

In a motion brought as matter of urgent national importance by Joshua Lidani (PDP-Gombe), the Senate was asked to look into the action of the SSS which led to arrest of seven judges in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the resolutions canvassed by Mr. Lidani was that the Senate should invite Mr. Daura to explain why his agency carried out the action the way it did without deference to the constitutional responsibility of the National Judicial Council.

When Mr. Saraki called for vote to uphold Mr. Lidani’s prayer, Senators yelled “ayes” and later “nay” in somewhat equal proportion.

Then, Mr. Saraki put the question again resulting in similar response as the first.

He then ruled “the nays have it”, translating to defeat of the proposal to invite Mr. Daura.

Specifically, Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, supported the prayer that Mr. Daura be invited.

But other Senators did not touch that part of the prayers sought.

The Senate however condemned the raid on residences of the Judges.

Angelina Jolie Reportedly Blocks Brad Pitt’s Numbers

It’s been almost a week since Angelina Jolie quietly filed for divorce from Brad Pitt and the entire world threw a tantrum and screamed “love is dead!” before moving on to post about the three fictional characters they’re a combination of. Well, it turns out there’s one person who’s not ready to call it quits: Brad Pitt.

A source told Us Weekly that Angelina has blocked all incoming text messages and all of Brad’s numbers, and he’s upset.

“He is beside himself and has been crying,” the source said. “He was completely caught off-guard and blindsided and had no idea she would do this. Angelina filed the court papers a minute before the courts closed on Monday night. He didn’t have a lawyer or anything. She had threatened divorce in the past but he did not think she would file this time.”

Another thing Brad probably didn’t know? That Angelina rented another house in Malibu before she filed for divorce. Or maybe he did know. We don’t know anything about their relationship, but I’m sure the sources and speculation will continue as the days and weeks move forward.

Facebook ‘Blocks Accounts’ Of Palestinian Journalists

Editors from two Palestinian news publications based in the occupied West Bank say their Facebook accounts were suspended last week and that no reason was provided, alleging their pages may have been censored because of a recent agreement between the US social media giant and the Israeli government aimed at tackling “incitement”.

Last week, four editors from the Shehab News Agency, which has more than 6.3 million likes on Facebook, and three executives from the Quds News Network, with about 5.1 million likes, reported that they could not access their personal accounts.

Both agencies cover daily news in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Nisreen al-Khatib, a translator and journalist at the Quds News Network, told Al Jazeera that the publication believes the account suspensions were triggered by an agreement between Facebook and Israel earlier this month, in which they agreed to jointly combat what Israeli claims is “incitement” by Palestinians on social media.

SSS Blocks Lawmaker From Travelling, Confiscates His Passport

Sunday Karim, a member of the House of Representatives from Kogi State, is currently being prevented by the State Security Service from boarding a flight at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the lawmaker has said.

Mr. Karim, representing Yagba East and West Federal Constituency, says he was on his way to the United States when state agents suddenly seized his passport as he tried to clear immigration.

The lawmaker said he was scheuled to travel by Air France, and that the flight was already boarding when he was blocked.

Mr. Karim, a PDP lawmaker, said his luggage had already been checked in before the incident, adding that he has “absolutely no prior notice” that the SSS was on his trail.

It is not immediately clear why Mr. Karim is being detained, but law enforcement agencies have recently focused on the activities of lawmakers in the wake of the budget padding scandal.

India Blocks Pornographic Websites

The Indian government on Monday in New Delhi, told internet service providers and telecom operators in the country to block 857 pornographic websites.

The directive came after the Supreme Court in July expressed concern, over the Home Ministry’s failure to block websites, featuring child pornography.

An official said on the condition of anonymity that the original petition, which led to the Supreme Court response in June argued that crimes against women and children were influenced by the proliferation of porn sites.

The official said the move was not a ban since several such websites were still available, and also through Virtual Private Networks and proxy servers.

“This is an interim measure as the government contemplates building up a regulatory framework, which could include various measures, including mass awareness”, the source said.

Telecom executives told local media it would take a few days to block all the websites.
Meanwhile, some users complained that the conservative and prudish move by the Hindu nationalist government ran counter to the Supreme Court’s position protecting the right of adults to access the internet.

“Watching porn is legal in India, although distribution and sale of pornographic material is illegal”, one of the users said.

Local media cited data from Pornhub, one of the world’s largest porn content providers as saying Indians were among the most “prolific consumers” of internet porn, accounting for 40 per cent of its 14.2 billion visits.

Indian filmmaker, Ram Gopal Varma, said that given its level of popularity, any government that embraced a ban on pornography would lose the next election.
“To ban porn, saying it will be seen by who shouldn’t see it, is like saying to stop traffic because there will be accidents”, he said.
