Nigeria Bars Use Of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Phone On Board Aircraft

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has banned the use or even the charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones on any airborne aircraft in Nigeria. It will be recalled that Samsung has recalled over 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 devices it manufactured recently citing several reported cases of overheating and outright explosion by users.
“Consequent upon recent incidents and concerns raised by Samsung about its Galaxy Note 7 devices, NCAA has directed passengers not to turn on or charge these devices on board aircraft,” the NCAA said yesterday in a statement by its spokesman, Sam Adurogboye. 
“In addition, these phones must not be stowed away in any checked-in baggage and importantly, all airlines are hereby advised to emphasize the prohibition of this devices on board during passenger briefings by the Cabin Crew,” the statement added. The NCAA urged all those responsible for searching or screening checked-in baggage  to intensify the procedures to identify possible checked-in Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
The  NCAA which regulates the Nigerian aviation sector however appealed to passengers to assist regulators and airlines to ensuring safety and security of air transportation in the country.
According to the NCAA, investigations by Samsung has traced the explosions of the Galaxy Note 7 device problems to charging and the company is limiting battery charging on Galaxy Note 7 devices to prevent inferno.
“The NCAA therefore calls on all passengers and airline operators to ensure total adherence to this directive as safety and security of air transportation is paramount to the us,” the NCAA added.

Court Bars Police, DSS, INEC From Interfering With PDP Convention

In yet another ruling from a court of concurrent jurisdiction, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered the police, Department of State Security (DSS) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to interfere with the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt on August 17.

This came as chairmen of the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapters of the PDP called on members to be united in their bid to reposition the party for greater heights ahead of 2019 elections.

PDP also got some reprieve yesterday when INEC released the final list of candidates for the Edo governorship election, featuring the name of Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the PDP, on the list.

Shortly after the PDP primary had elected Ize-Iyamu as the candidate of the party to contest the poll in Edo State, a faction of the main opposition party led by its ousted national chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, held another primary through which Mr. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen emerged as the factional candidate.

This led to uncertainty over Ize-Iyamu’s candidacy which was finally laid to rest yesterday by INEC.
Ruling on an ex-parte motion brought before the court by Senator Ben Obi (plaintiff) on behalf of the National Convention Planning Committee of the PDP against the Inspector General of Police, State Commissioner of Police, the DSS, the state Director of the DSS and INEC (as defendants), the presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Watila, ordered the police and the DSS to provide security for the PDP during the convention.

He also ordered the INEC to monitor the election as required by law.
The motion was filed by Wori N. Wori on behalf of Senator Obi relying on a 34-paragragh affidavit sworn to by Felix Obuah.

Buhari Bars Ministers From Using Large Convoys

President Muhammadu Buhari has outlawed the use of large convoys and retinue of aides by the ministers-designate.

This revelation was made by a minister-designate, Dr. Chris Ngige, who briefed State House correspondents at the end of a two-day retreat held for the 36 ministers-designate at the Presidential Villa on Friday.

According to him, the order was in line with the nation’s economic reality.

Asked whether Buhari told them anything about the economy, Ngige said: “Yes, lean economy because we are going to block areas of leakages, retinue of aides, protocol staff, large convoys of cars are things that will not fly in this administration.”

On ongoing debates on portfolios for ministers, he said: “If you have portfolio, if you don’t have portfolio, it is one single Federal Executive Council (FEC). You bring whatever it is on the table. That is not a problem at all. We have a right to discuss things around the ministries because it is one single cabinet.

“The important thing is that we want to move our people from where they are now, they are in abject poverty which concerns about 75 percent of the populace.
“So, we need to actually restructure the political and social moment of the country and that is what we are going to do. That means poverty will reduce.”

Abia Tribunal Annuls Election, Bars APGA From Re-run

The National and State Assemblies Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia has barred the opposition All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, from participating in a fresh election it ordered in Aba North State Constituency.

The tribunal has nullified the election of Mr. Emeka Nnamani of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, representing Aba North State Constituency on the ground that he was abinitio, not qualified to contest the election held on April 11, 2015.

Delivering judgment in the petition filed by Dr. Blessing Nwagba of PDP challenging the election of Nnamani, the tribunal nullified his election and ordered a fresh election in the constituency but said that APGA would not participate in the fresh election.

According to the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Sabiu Yahuza, “the petitioner, Dr. Nwagba proved the allegation of non-qualification leveled against the respondent as his name was not in the register of his Eziama Ward of his party, APGA, and ought not to have participated in the said election.”

The panel however exempted APGA from participating in the re-run of the election, saying that it would be between the petitioner’s party, PDP, and the other candidates from the other parties that participated in the April election.

On the allegation that Nnamani forged the certificate of University of Port Harcourt, the tribunal directed the police to investigate the matter and prosecute the respondent if found culpable.

Court Bars Use Of Soldiers During Election

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Nigerian Armed Forces have no role in the conduct of elections in the country.

The court relied on a recent Court of Appeal ruling that barred the use of soldiers in the conduct of elections, stating that it was a violation of Section 217(2)(c) of the Constitution and Section 1 of the Armed Forces Act.

The appellate court had also relied on a judgment by a Federal High Court in Sokoto last January also barring the use of armed forces in the conduct of elections.

The latest ruling says the Nigerian government should not deploy soldiers at polling units, a plan that had generated controversy between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
