Ban Ki-moon Apologizes For UN Role In Haiti Cholera Epidemic

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has apologised for the first time to the people of Haiti for the international organisation’s role in a deadly cholera outbreak that has killed more than 9,300 people and infected over 800,000.

“On behalf of the United Nations, I want to say very clearly we apologise to the Haitian people,” he said three times, in Haitian Creole, French and English, to the UN General Assembly on Thursday.

“We simply did not do enough with regards to the cholera outbreak and its spread in Haiti … We are profoundly sorry for our role,” Ban said.

According to numerous independent experts, cholera was introduced to Haiti by infected Nepalese UN peacekeepers sent to the Caribbean country after the massive 2010 earthquake.

Cholera, a disease that is transmitted through contaminated drinking water and causes acute diarrhea, is a major challenge in a country with poor sanitary conditions.

The UN reiterated its rejection of claims that it is also legally responsible for the damages from the health emergency.

“We do not change our basic legal position,” UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson told reporters on Thursday.

The UN chief also formally presented the 193-nation General Assembly with a “new approach,” a two-pronged programme to help the families of the cholera victims and support the battle against the disease.

The UN hopes the new proposal will raise $400m over two years, but funding for prior UN assistance to Haiti has been slow to arrive.

White Model Apologizes for Being Featured on the Cover of Black Hair Magazine

Model Emily Bador was surprised to see a photo of herself on the cover of the December/January issue of Black Hair magazine, and has issued an apology to anyone her photo may have offended.

“This image is about three or four years old,” Bador — who is white —posted on Instagram. “It was never intended to be on the cover of this magazine. If I had known it was going to be published, I would never have condoned it. I’m upset and angry I was never asked by the photographer/hair salon/anyone if this image could be used for the cover of Black Hair.”

Even though Bador did not consent to having her image used by the magazine, she is still apologizing for the fact that such a photo exists at all.

“I would deeply and sincerely like to apologize to every one for this, and black women especially,” she says. “I believe this shoot is from when I was around 15 and didn’t understand cultural appropriation or the impact it has on people of color. I was uneducated, ignorant and immature.”

“Growing up in a very, very white city, I had no idea the struggles black women face and how often they were persecuted for their hair,” she continues. “I didn’t understand that shoots like this support the very Eurocentric beauty standard that the mainstream media focus on, which reinforce the idea that black features are only okay on white women.”

The London-based model says she has learned a lot since the time the photo was originally taken.

“I do regret doing this,” she says. “I’m so sorry, and I’m very sorry this cover was taken away from a black woman. I constantly am learning and becoming more and more informed. It’s important to come forward and be honest with ourselves about our past mistakes, otherwise we will never learn. Again, I’m truly, deeply sorry to anyone I’ve offended and I hope if nothing else this post can educate others so they don’t make similar mistakes.”

Facebook Apologizes For Promoting False Story On Megyn Kelly In #Trending

Facebook is apologizing after featuring a fake, sensational news story about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in its influential “Trending” topics section.

The story, which has since been removed from the list, falsely claimed that the cable channel had fired Kelly for being “a closet liberal who actually wants Hillary to win.”

The story about Kelly’s supposed firing came from the right-wing website End The Fed, which boasts headlines like “What Obama Has to Say About ‘White Folks’ Will Make Your Blood Boil” and “Eric Bolling Exposes New Dirty Tricks Clintons Used to Escape Jail Time and Become Millionaires.”

The fact that Facebook was taken in and promoted the fake story was captured by the Independent Journal Review’s Justin Green, who tweeted a screenshot of Facebook’s Trending list before it was corrected.

CNN Boss Apologizes To Kenya For “Hotbed Of Terror” Reference

CNN has apologized to Kenya over a recent terrorism slur.

In a televised CNN report preceding President Obama’s July trip to Kenya, the news network has referred to the East African country as a “hotbed of terror” while highlighting the possibility of an attack by Al-Shaabab militants during the President’s visit.

Kenyans were not amused by CNN’s labeling and immediately took to social media to hurl insults and sarcastic humor at CNN under the hashtag #SomeoneTellCNN, which ended up trending onTwitter TWTR -2.89% for a few days.

But the Kenyan government took a more serious approach towards reprimanding CNN. Two weeks ago, the Kenyan Tourism Board, a state agency whose mission is to drive and support the effective marketing of Kenya’s tourism products, said it was withdrawing advertising from the network in reaction to the “misrepresentation of the country’s status.”
