Buhari approves 56th independence anniversary programme

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the programme of events for the commemoration of Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary.

Bolaji Adebiyi, Director of Press in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF), said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Mr. Adebiyi said an interdenominational thanksgiving church service had been scheduled for September 25 at the National Worship Centre, Abuja at 4p.m.

A public lecture and Jumma’at prayers are slated for September 30 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively at the National Mosque, Abuja.

He said the Church service, public lecture and Jumma’at prayers were open to members of public.

Mr. Adebiyi added that attendance to the Presidential Change of Guard scheduled for Oct. 1 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja at 3 p.m. would be strictly by invitation.

Cultists Kill 11 In Ogun To Mark Anniversary

No fewer than 11 persons have been killed by suspected cult members in Igode and Fakale communities in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Four persons were also injured while houses and cars were vandalized in the attack that lasted for about 10 hours.

It was learnt that the hoodlums, said to be Aye Confraternity members, had gone on the rampage at about 11am on Wednesday to commemorate their anniversary tagged 7/7.

The grand finale of the anniversary was reportedly held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Emuren, a neighbouring community.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about 25 on motorcycles, came from Emuren, wielding guns and cutlasses.

Their targets were said to be members of the Eiye Confraternity, a rival cult. The bandits, who reportedly wore masks, shot dead three welders at a junction bordering Emuren and Igode.

The welders were said to be returning from a work site on a motorcycle.

The rampaging miscreants reportedly proceeded to the Fakale community, where they opened fire on a crowd watching a football match in a viewing centre, killing seven persons.

It was learnt that one of the deceased, identified simply as Dare, was a member of the Oodua People’s Congress.

Others were identified as Ibukun, Ismaila, Sunday, and a steel rod seller, Dare Olakanmi.

Three of them were said to have been buried.

However, the police had yet to remove the remains of the three welders as of 12pm on Thursday.

Four others, who were injured, were said to have been taken to a hospital in Sagamu.

Navy Anniversary: Sailing Club Holds Diamond Jubilee Boat Race

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok Ette-Ibas has said that the Navy Sailing Club had performed up to expectation by producing athletes that have represented the country in international events.

Etta-Ibas who was represented by Rear Adm. Joe Okojie said this at a championship organized by the club to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Nigeria Navy on Sunday in Lagos.

He noted the Club had contributed immensely to the development of water sports in the country..

According to him, the club was established in 1987 for grassroots development of water sports.

“The future is bright for water sports in the country and I’m amazed with the display of some of the young participants, who are as young as six.

“Products from this club have represented the country meritoriously over the years and I strongly belief the club will not relent.

“The club is also open for civilians who have the talent and zeal for water sports,’’ he said.

Solomon Dalung, Minister for Youths and Sports commended the club for its contribution to sports development.

Dalung, represented by Demola Are, a senior official at the ministry said that development of sports at the grassroots was vital to the growth of sailing.

“Kudos to the naval sailing club for its initiation and support to the growth of sports at the grassroots.

“We assure you that the sport ministry will continue to work hand in hand with the club to discover more talents,” he said.

APC Plans Merger Anniversary Celebration

The All Progressives Congress (APC)  has disclosed that  it intends to roll out drums at the end of the month to mark the two year anniversary of the coming together of major opposition political parties to clinch victory at the presidential polls.

APC was registered by INEC July 31, 2013, and by June 13, the party elected its substantive national leadership.

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Sunday, the party’s National Organising Secretary and the chairman of the anniversary committee, Senator Osita Izunaso, said  APC had every reason to celebrate  its existence as a political party because of it numerous achievements recorded in the last two years.

He said it was unprecedented that within two years of the APC’s registration as a party, it has 22 governors, controlling the two chambers of the National Assembly and also have President Muhammadu Buhari as the number one citizen of Nigeria.

According to him,  it would not only be a mere celebration, but the party would use the opportunity to embark on soul-searching exercise on how best to deliver on the promises made to the Nigerians.

“We also want to use the avenue for internal soul search to let ourselves know that the task ahead is more than the one behind,” he said.
