Court Sentences Boston Bomber Tsarnaev To Death

A  US jury has decided Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should die for his role in the Boston marathon bombing in April 2013.

The sentence on Friday came after 14 hours of deliberations on whether Tsarnaev, who was a teenager when he carried out the attacks with his elder brother Tamerlan, should be imprisoned for the rest of his life or be executed.

The 21-year-old did not react when the sentence was read out, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Tsarnaev was convicted last month of all 30 federal charges against him, 17 of which carried the possibility of the death penalty.

Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured when two pressure-cooker bombs packed with shrapnel exploded near the marathon finish line on April 15, 2013. Dzhokar and Tamerlan also killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer days later.

Tsarnaev’s lawyer, Judy Clarke, admitted from the beginning that he participated in the bombings, bluntly telling jurors in her opening statement: “It was him.”

But the defence sought to show that most of the blame for the attack fell on his older brother, who wanted to punish the US for its actions in Muslim countries. They said Dzhokhar was an impressionable 19-year-old who fell under the influence of a brother he admired.

Prosecutors portrayed Tsarnaev as an equal partner in the attack, saying he was so heartless he put a bomb behind a group of children, killing an 8-year-old boy.

Carmen Ortiz, prosecutor for Massachusetts, commended the jurors, saying the verdict was “fair and just.”

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said that he hoped “the verdict will bring with it a significant level of comfort and solace to all hurt.”

“Regardless of how you feel about the death penalty, today was also about sending a message. And, the message sent is one that says terrorism in our city will not be tolerated,” Evans added.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with families of (victims) Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu and MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.”

Russia Blames U.S. For Ukraine Conflict

Top Russian officials accused the United States on Thursday of seeking political and military dominance in the world and sought to put blame on the West for international security crises, including the conflict in east Ukraine. Reuters have more:

Evoking Cold War-style rhetoric, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said a drive by the United States and its allies to bring Kiev closer to the West was a threat to Moscow and had forced it to react. “The United States and its allies have crossed all possible lines in their drive to bring Kiev into their orbit. That could not have failed to trigger our reaction,” he told an annual security conference in Moscow.

Echoing his comments, General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, told the meeting: “Considering themselves the winners of the Cold War, the United States decided to reshape the world to fit its needs.

“Aiming at complete dominance, Washington stopped taking into account the interests of other countries and respect international law.” Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine last March following what it says was an “unconstitutional coup” in which street protests toppled a Moscow-allied Ukrainian president in Kiev after he ditched a deal to move closer to the European Union.

U.S. Offers Measures To Countries Fighting Terrorism

The U.S. President, Mr Barrack Obama, has identified measures that would eliminate terrorist activities in countries susceptible to its dangers and threats.

Obama said in statement by Africa Regional Media Hub of the U.S. Department of State that it was imperative for governments to urgently address the grievances of terrorists.

The statement said the U.S. president made the remarks at the closing of the Summit on Countering Violent Extremism which had 60 nations in attendance.

The summit, according to the statement highlighted domestic and international efforts at preventing violent extremists and their supporters from radicalising or recruiting individuals to commit acts of violence globally.

“Countries have to truly invest in the education and skills and job training that our extraordinary young people need.

“We do have to address the grievances that terrorists exploit, including economic grievances.

“Just as we address economic grievances, we need to face this challenge — and that’s addressing the political grievances that are exploited by terrorists.

“Poverty alone does not cause a person to become a terrorist any more than poverty alone causes somebody to become a criminal.

“When governments oppress their people, deny human rights, stifle dissent, marginalise ethnic and religious groups or favor certain religious groups, it sows the seeds of extremism and violence,’’ it said.

The statement added that it was easy for terrorist groups to step into any void.

According to the statement, terrorists are sometimes offered social services that governments cannot provide for their people.

It expressed the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting people to provide for their families

Hillary Clinton Could Be Next American President

Seventy-three percent of Americans expect to see a female president in their lifetime, even as men are expected to maintain their dominant role in business, a survey published Wednesday said.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center interviewed 1,835 adults online in November to get a sense of how Americans view women and leadership today.

Most respondents felt there was no difference between men and women when it came to leadership qualities like intelligence and capacity for innovation.

But when asked to explain the shortage of female political leaders, 28 per cent of men and 47 per cent of women said women were being held to higher standards than men.

In the business realm, the proportion who said women were judged more harshly than their male counterparts was even higher: a third of men and just over half of women.

That said, nearly three-quarters of those polled said they thought the United States would elect a female president in their lifetime. Just one in five respondents disagreed.

Women who support the Democratic party were the most enthusiastic about a woman in the White House — amid speculation that Hillary Clinton might run again for president in 2016.
