Nigerian Governors Fault Buhari’s Ambassadorial List

Progressives Governors Forum on Monday faulted the ambassadorial list forwarded to the Senate for screening and approval by President Muhammadu Buhari.

They had complained that it was lop-sided in favor of some senatorial zones in the states at the detriment of other zones.

Plateau State Governor, Solomon Lalong, who spoke with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting with the President, shed light on Pauline Tallen’s rejection of the ambassadorial appointment.

He said: “Pauline is an astute politician from my state, and part of the issue we also raised was on some of the appointments that were made. So all the states that had to complain are going to put it in writing and the president promised he is going to look into it.

“Well, it is not only about her husband I think it is the dimension of plateau politics because I had already made complaints to Mr. President that appointments should not be concentrated in one zone. And so all these appointments came again from one zone, in that particular zone.

“So the complaints that are coming from our state is not about her own personal interest, it is the fact that two ambassadorial appointments are coming from the same zone that we had complained. That is my zone.

“We had complained that the next appointment should go to the other zone the central and the northern zone. And so when that appointment came the kind of uproar that followed that appointment also necessitated an intervention.

“And I think as a matured politician she stepped down and sacrifice that for the people of plateau,” he added.

He said that the state is still working on Tallen’s replacement.

According to him, a little consultation before the appointments were announced would have resolved the problems.

“It is not a big issue but at times a little consultation would have solved that problem because these are issues in the interest of the state. So you can’t have two appointments, very key appointments like that coming from a particular zone that is already overloaded with appointments. All the federal appointments is from the southern zone, so it would not be fair.

“So it is the issue of fairness now we are approaching Mr. President to consider fairness and appoint people from those areas that do not have representation.” he stated.

FG Begins Process Of Appointing Ambassadors– Onyeama

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, yesterday  said the Federal Government had begun the process of appointing a new set of ambassadors to represent Nigeria in various countries of the world.

Onyeama stated this at a news conference to mark one year anniversary of President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration

Twenty-six  non-career ambassadors and ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary on tour of duty abroad were recalled in June 2015.

They were among the 93 envoys posted out in 2012.

The minister explained that the reason for the delay in their appointment was that the current administration wanted to do a thorough job to ensure that very competent hands were sent out.

“It is a work in progress; it is being done and may be in short time we will have the list of ambassadors going to various countries.

“Sometimes, it is on the approach of getting the best hands.

“So we want to be very clear of the ones we send out to represent the country; we want to be sure we have representations that will reflect real vision of this government,” he said.

He said that government was set to implement all the agreements signed with various countries to achieve the goal of signing such pacts.

Onyeama said that government had set up an inter-ministerial committee to work on them, to ensure effective implementation of the agreement.

“So far, what we have done is to set up inter-ministerial committee and identified all the follow up actions and set up timeline for them.’’

The minister added that government had identified the ministries, departments and agencies that would be responsible for different aspects of what was required in the agreement.

“That is a very concrete follow up mechanism put in place to actualise the agreements,’’ he said.

Buhari Charges Corps Members To Be Ambassadors Of Change

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged corps members across the country to see themselves as ambassadors of positive change in the course of their national assignment.

The president gave the charge yesterday at the swearing in ceremony of Batch A (stream-two) corps members at the Ogun State NYSC Orientation Camp, Sagamu.

Delivering the president’s address, the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun represented by the secretary to the state government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, maintained that corps members “must have attitudinal change towards social ills which have impeded the peace and progress of the nation for too long.”

“You must give your best. You must avoid indulging in crimes and other negative vices that impede our collective efforts to move the nation forward. The quest for peace and progress has been disrupted and frustrated by social ills, many of them perpetrated by young people,” he said.
