SSS clampdown on Bureau De Change continues, 40 arrested in Kano.

The State Security Service has arrested about 40 Bureau de Change operators in Kano for allegedly selling foreign currencies above the official rates.

An official of the Alamant Bureau de Change Association in Kano, Abdulhamid Kabir, said the operators were arrested early Friday.

He said the association had met with officials of the SSS last week on how to ensure that the operators in Kano complied with the official forex rates.

“You know this issue is not affecting only one person, it requires time for us to convince our members to adopt government recognized official rates”, Mr. Kabir said.

“But all of a sudden this morning, the security (agents) raided us, whisking away many of our members”.

A source at the SSS office confirmed the arrest but insisted that those arrested were unlicensed operators who had been trailed for a while.

“I want to assure you that those arrested were touts who sell above official prices”, said the source who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the development.

Security agents had last week carried out similar raids on some Bureau De Change operators in Abuja and Lagos.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how a meeting between the SSS, the Bureau De Change and Central Bank agreed that the dollar not be sold beyond N400 to buyers.

The agreement was to help government reduce the exchange rate and enable importers easy access to forex.

Critics have said the clampdown will further make the dollar scarce and reflects government not allowing a free market.

The clampdown has, however, forced some of the money changers to go into hiding to sell at a higher rate to buyers.

FG To Procure 40 Rice Mills For Self-sufficiency

The Federal government says it is facilitating the procurement of additional 40 large-scale rice mills to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production by 2018.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday at a workshop themed “Big Boost for Agro Diversification and Export.’’

Ogbeh said that the Integrated Rice Mills (IRMs) of the Ministry had increased the rice milling capacity in the country.

He said that the Ministry’s new goal was to attain self-sufficiency in food production and annually export 10 million metric tonnes of food to ECOWAS region and beyond by 2019. According to the minister, the country’s food import bill has further declined from N1.1 trillion in 2009 to N684 billion in 2013.

“Nigeria has huge agricultural potentials with 11 million hectares of arable land but only cultivates 40 per cent; 263 billion cubic metres of water with two of the largest rivers in Africa.

“We have a cheap labour force to support agriculture intensification. We grow our food, feed ourselves and create local and international markets for our farmers and also unlock our enormous potentials in agriculture.

“We can achieve the economic diversification goal of government and surmount the present economic recession.

“I hope with the help of the Pentair, Good Rain, Dayu irrigation, Zhong Zhou Poultry, Jinan and our local companies, we will diversify and get out of recession in no time,’’ Ogbeh said.

Don Ekesiobi, Managing Director, Eurobase Nigeria Limited, the workshop organiser, said his company and the Ministry of Agriculture brought to Nigeria six world leading agro companies for partnership.

Ekesiobi said that the companies would introduce and showcase for adoption, technologies to turn around neglected agro value chain of the country in six months.

Meanwhile, a mob attack on herdsmen in Kaduna left no fewer than 14 persons “hacked and burnt” to death. A commercial bus driver, Adamu Aliyu, told newsmen yesterday: “I was returning from Plateau State with eight passengers, all of them Fulani herders. My bus broke down in Kaduna State, so I left it to go search for a mechanic.

“While I was away, a mob surrounded the vehicle and forcibly brought out the eight passengers. They hacked them to death, dumped them in the vehicle and set it ablaze.

“Another vehicle was also attacked, when it stopped to refuel and all the six people were burnt to death along with the car.”

Aliyu said a riot broke out in the streets, with soldiers and policemen finally intervening to contain the carnage.
