The member representing Jos South/ East Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Bitrus Kaze, denied suggestions the party was headed for a collapse following the resignation of two prominent executives.
The party’s Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, and Board of Trustees Chairman, Tony Anenih, have quit their positions in recent days.
However, Kaze said while the party was struggling to overcome the aftershocks of its disappointing outing in the 2015 general election, it did suggest the party would fold.
“It is correct to say President (Goodluck) Jonathan’s phone call to congratulate Gen (Muhammadu) Buhari even before he was declared as President-elect is world-class, it is also correct to say that the gale of resignations that has hit the top echelon of the PDP is equally consistent with global best practices. When confronted with such circumstances, key political actors in advanced democracies take complete responsibility by humbly resigning to pave way for new beginning,” Kaze said.
The lawmaker recalled that recently, the Conservatives surprised pundits in the United Kingdom by winning the elections decisively. “The ability of the PDP to successfully evolve from a ruling party into a virile opposition is requisite for the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic ethos and for the strengthening of her experience in partisan politics.”
Amid the defections and resignations, Kaze pledged to remain in the PDP and help it wade through its challenges. “While I am unable to absolve the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP of blame, the verbal outburst of the individuals like Chief Femi Fani Kayode at such difficult times is certainly unhelpful,” he added.
