It will interest you to know that three of the countries who made the semi finals of the just concluded world cup have women at the helm of political power.
Brazil’s Dilma Rousseff happened to be a former student leader who fought Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 70s. Despite the riots/protest by Brazilians, her country was able to host a world cup which Sepp Blatter, FIFA President, gave a 9+ rating out of 10. Brazil is also billed to host the 2016 Olympics. Her leadership qualities are excellent.
Europe’s longest serving elected female head of government, Angela Merkel of Germany, is one of the women who has stood out. She is widely respected in Europe. The German populace can attest to her calm, pragmatic and firm approach. Being able to lead a country like Germany requires certain stellar leadership qualities which she has in abundance.
Strong willed Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina may not be so popular among her people but she stands out as a down-to-earth politician. She’s also Argentina’s first elected female president.
The list goes on and on. It’s not limited to only politics as many women are beginning to take hold of the business clime. According to Forbes recently, the US has 60 percent of all its personal wealth controlled by women.
General Motors, Hewlett Packard and IBM all have female CEOs to name but a few. These are rugged companies who are well grounded in business ethics and are privileged to have the right people in control.
In Nigeria, we have Okonjo Iweala doing well as Minister of Finance and who was once VP of World Bank while we have Oby Ezekwesili also a one time VP of World Bank in Africa.
It’s high time women moved away from the shadows of men and stand up to be counted. Those days when the work of women was limited to kitchen duties is long past.
Women should move out of the inferiority complex that has limited them and stop trying hard to be like the male folks and copying whatever they do in the name of female emancipation. They should carve out their niche in whatever discipline they find themselves.
And by the way men, it’s WOMEN ALERT ooo!!
