Yabatech lecturers vow to continue strike.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Yaba College of Technology chapter, has accused the management of the institution of short paying staff salary by 25 per cent.

The ASUP Chairman in the college, Adeyemi Aromolaran, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday that for not receiving their full salary, the workers would not call off the strike.

The union had on February 10, begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of the balance of January salary by the college management.

Aromolaran said this was not the right time for the management of the institution to deny workers their full salary when the economy was biting hard.

According to him, for about 10 years now, workers’ salary are being paid by both Federal Government and the institution on 75 per cent and 25 per cent ratio, respectively.

“The Federal Government had in January paid 75 per cent of the salary while the school management is expected to pay the balance of 25 per cent.

“The balance, which represents various allowances, is yet to be paid by the management,” Mr. Aromolaran said.

He said the allowances were supposed to be paid from the internally generated revenue of the college.

Mr. Aromolaran said that the payment of the salary on the ratio of 75:25 by government and school management had been on for more than eight years.

According to him, the fractional payment policy has been on since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also alleged that for more than 10 years, staff salaries and allowances have not been reviewed.

“This is not the right time to deny workers full payment of their salary. The economy is biting harder on the workers, particularly in Lagos State.

“We will not call off the strike until the management pay us our money, all academic activities will remain suspended,” Mr. Aromolaran told NAN.

He recalled that the union had similar experience in August 2016, but that after a protest, the Minister of Education intervened by directing that the allowance be paid.

“This time around, we will remain on strike until our full salary is paid. The management is trying to play pranks with the union.’’

He said that if it warrants waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to return from vacation, the union would not suspend the strike.

Parents in panic as YABATECH Undergraduate Goes Missing.

An undergraduate of the Yaba College of Technology, Emmanuel Kolade, is said to be missing. Emmanuel, who is studying Computer Engineering at the school, left his parents’ home on Awolumate Street, Ajuwon, Ogun State, on November 11.

His whereabouts had remained unknown since then.

The 32-year-old man was a part-time student of YABATECH and also worked in Computer Village, Ikeja, where he repaired phones.

His father, Mr. Adeniyi Kolade, told Punch that Emmanuel, his fifth child, left for his workplace on the day, adding that he did not return home.

He said, “On November 11, he told me that he was going to his workplace in Ikeja, from where he would go to school. When his mother was about travelling that morning, he called her back and gave her N500 to augment her fare.

“However, when it was 7.30pm and we didn’t hear from him, we became worried. This was because he never stayed out late. We called his telephone lines, but they were switched off. We checked at his place of work and his colleagues said he didn’t resume for work that morning. The school also said they did not see him. All our efforts have proved abortive.”

Adeniyi said the matter had been reported at the Ajuwon Police Station, Ogun State, and the Area F Police Command, Lagos State, among other stations.

It was learnt that the victim had been ill for about three months before he went missing. His father said he had fully recuperated from a “chronic typhoid,” wondering what could have gone wrong.

His mother, Mrs. Dorcas Kolade, described him as easy-going and gentle.

“If not for some financial constraints, we would have travelled together that morning. I appeal to Nigerians to help me find him. We have been hearing tales that he was spotted at some places, but we can’t find him,” she added.

His sister, Funmilola Oshunnuga, said the family had become desperate to get Emmanuel back home.

A second spark was what resulted in the fire which razed the entire first floor of the female hostel.

The student further noted that many undergraduates unsuccessfully attempted to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.

Hence, they frantically called the fire service who arrived long after the fire had covered the first floor of the hostel.

“Fire department came later but because there was no water in the school and they also had no water, so they couldn’t do anything,” the student added.

It took over an hour for the fire service to find water to salvage what was left of the first floor.

The student further noted that Yabatech has been suffering from water scarcity for the past month.

When TheCable Lifestyle visited the institution, the fire had subsided but hadn’t been totally put out.

Students were noticeably in a state of despair over their lost properties and academic materials.

“People trying to help out had to go to another hostel, fetch water in buckets and climb four flights of stairs to get to the fire.”

“I literally sat and watched my hostel burn,” the student added.

Officials of the fire service are currently putting out the remaining fire.
