International group urges world leaders to reject same-sex marriage

The International Organization for the Family (IOF) has urged religious, political, social, and civic leaders across the world not to yield to external pressures on same-sex marriage.

This appeal is contained in a statement issued by participants at the just concluded meeting of the organisation held in Cape Town, South Africa.

The statement tagged “Cape Town Declaration” reaffirmed the critical role of traditional man-woman marriage as the bedrock of civilisation.

According to the statement, ‘the family is the “first and primordial community” and that marriage is “the conjugal bond of man and woman.

“This definition is not a matter of preference or temperament or taste,” the signers declared, but “the heart of any just social order.”

“Throwing down the gauntlet to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender (LGBT) lobby, a thriving culture will firmly resist every push to redefine marriage to include: same-sex or group bonds, or sexually open or temporary ones.’’

The document also declared that the nature of marriage as between one man and one woman is “a truth that no government can change”.

It said that the declaration was a historic step in the global fight to preserve the truth about marriage.

It said forcing the agenda of same-sex marriage on nations by manipulation of foreign aid or the likes was a deplorable practice.

Those that signed the declaration pledged to work toward recovering the true understanding of marriage in places where governments had imposed an unwanted and unwarranted distortion of marriage upon society, it said.

“Beyond affixing their names to the document, signers also pledged to resist the rising cultural imperialism of western powers whose governments seek nothing less than the ideological colonization of the family.

“Bowing to no earthly power, using every just measure, we shall not falter or flag until the truth about marriage is embraced in our laws and honoured in our lands,’’ the document stated.

“The new text is reminiscent of the 2009 Manhattan Declaration, which garnered some 440,000 signatures in its first year.

“While the Manhattan Declaration targeted three points: the sanctity of life, the dignity of marriage and freedom of religion, the Cape-Town Declaration chose to focus specifically on marriage and the family.

“Our goal is to gain 2 million signatures on the Cape-Town Declaration within a year from today: December 11, the Universal Day of Human Rights,” the statement said.

This statement was released on Dec.10, the International Human Rights Day, to mark the anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly held in Paris on December 10, 1948.

Brian Brown, President of IOF, Emmanuel Badejo, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Nigeria, as well as hundreds of other religious, political, social and civic leaders from other continents appended their signatures to the document .

Obama Makes Farewell Calls to World Leaders

New York – Outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama has commenced farewell phone calls to world leaders who are U.S. allies during his eight-year presidency. The White House said on Wednesday, in New York that Obama made farewell telephone calls to President François Hollande of France and Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand.

In readout of Obama’s call to Hollande, the White House said that the U.S. leader thanked his French counterpart for his support to him during his presidency. “President Obama spoke today by phone with President Francois Hollande of France, to offer his appreciation for their close partnership since President Hollande took office in 2012. “President Obama thanked President Hollande for his leadership and expressed his appreciation for France’s steady contributions to the strength and unity of the trans-Atlantic alliance.” Similarly, the readout of Obama’s call to the New Zealand leader said the U.S. president thanked him for their close friendship and partnership during his two-term presidency.

“President Obama spoke by phone with Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand, to thank him for the close friendship and partnership the two leaders have enjoyed over the last eight years. “During that time, U.S.-New Zealand cooperation reached unprecedented level. “The President underscored that New Zealand would remain one of the United States’ closest partners as we continue to work together on a wide array of issues. “These include contributing to global peace and security, encouraging sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and addressing climate change and conservation challenges”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obama, a Democrat, was inaugurated as the 44th U.S. President on Jan. 20, 2009, the first Black man to be elected president in the history of U.S. NAN also reports that Obama’s tenure will end on Jan. 20, 2017 when Republican President-elect Donald Trump is expected to be inaugurated as the 45th U.S. President.

World Leaders To Attend Shimon Peres’ Funeral

A long list of world leaders will attend the funeral of former Israeli prime minister and president Shimon Peres, who died on Wednesday at 93.

Some of the world’s most powerful figures will be at the service in Jerusalem on Friday, including US President Barack Obama.

Mr Peres’s condition had deteriorated after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.

He was one of the last of a generation of Israeli politicians present at the nation’s birth in 1948.

Mr Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role negotiating the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians a year earlier, a prize he shared with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The agreement was witnessed by former US President Bill Clinton and signed at the White House. On Wednesday Mr Clinton said on Twitter:

“I will miss Shimon Peres, my brilliant and eloquent friend. His life was a blessing to all who strive for peace…”

Other world leaders set to attend the funeral on Friday include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Mr Peres will receive a state burial at a ceremony on Friday at Mount Herzel Cemetery in Jerusalem.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sent a letter of condolence to Mr Peres’ family “expressing his sorrow and sadness”.

World Leaders Gather In Japan Ahead Of G7

US President Barack Obama arrived in Japan on Wednesday for a Group of Seven summit, kicking off a historic visit that will also take him to the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima.

Obama was joining other leaders from the club of rich democracies for a gathering set to be dominated by the lacklustre state of the global economy.

Heads of state and government from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and host Japan were also making their way to Ise Shima, a mountainous and sparsely populated area 300 kilometres (200 miles) southwest of Tokyo, whose mainly elderly residents rely chiefly on tourism and cultured pearls.

Security was tight across the region, with thousands of extra police drafted in to patrol train stations and ferry terminals, and to direct traffic on the usually quiet roads during the two-day meeting.

Tokyo said it was taking no chances in the wake of terror attacks that struck Paris and Brussels in recent months.

Dustbins have been removed or sealed and coin-operated lockers blocked at train and subway stations in the capital and areas around the venue site.

Authorities said they will be keeping a close eye on so-called “soft targets” such as theatres and stadiums.

However, unlike in many other rich democracies, protests were unlikely to cause much of a security headache.

Buhari Asks World Leaders To Save Lake Chad

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has called on world leaders to forge a united front to save Lake Chad’s ecosystem from further depletion caused by the adverse effects of climate change.

The Nigerian President made the request at the Leaders Event of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly referred to as COP 21, in Paris.

President Buhari said climate change had continued to pose a threat to Nigeria’s security and development.

He said: “At the sub-regional level, we are saddled with the challenge of the drying up of the Lake Chad Basin, which is resulting in the total wipe out of livelihoods of many communities surrounding this trans-boundary natural resource.

“Regrettably, the world is leaving behind millions of people who depend on the Lake for their survival.

“The Government of Nigeria welcomes the Lake Chad Development and Climate Resilience Plan, and the Lake Chad Basin Commission and international partners for designing this climate-based Plan”.

“In all, the experience of countries sharing the Lake Chad further illustrates the mutual challenge we face today and which must be collectively addressed without further delay”.

Buhari, 150 World Leaders At Opening Day Of Climate Change Conference In Paris

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday left Malta for Paris where he will present Nigeria’s statement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to begin in the French capital today.

President Buhari had last Thursday left Abuja for Malta where he participated in the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting which ended yesterday.

He was scheduled to join about 150 other world leaders today at the Leaders Event on the opening day of the climate change conference to be hosted by President Francois Hollande of France and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon.

Buhari was also billed to participate in a summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin Republic which has been scheduled to take place on December 2 in Paris on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change.

Deliberations at the Paris meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin Republic will focus mainly on the war against Boko Haram and other security issues of common interest to participating countries.

President Buhari was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama; the Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed and the National Security Adviser, retired Major-General Babagana Monguno.

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in New York called on the international community to urgently redouble its efforts to strengthen mechanisms for dismantling safe havens for proceeds of corruption.

Addressing world leaders at the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations, President Buhari also urged his counterparts to do more to return stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin.

Observing that corruption, cross-border financial crimes, cyber crimes and human trafficking are major challenges of the 21st century which the international community must work collectively to overcome, President Buhari reaffirmed his administration’s determination to frontally confront the twin evils of corruption and illicit financial outflows.

“Let me reaffirm the Nigerian government’s unwavering commitment to fight corruption and illicit financial flows. By any consideration, corruption and cross border financial crimes are impediments to development, economic growth, and the realization of the well-being of citizens across the globe,” Mr. Buhari said.

“Nigeria is ready and willing to partner with international agencies and individual countries on a bilateral basis to confront crimes and corruption.

“In particular, I call upon the global community to urgently redouble efforts towards strengthening the mechanisms for dismantling safe havens for proceeds of corruption and ensuring the return of stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin.”

Turkey Kills 40 Rebels Today After 16 Of Its Soldiers Were Killed on Sunday

Turkish warplanes early hours of this morning launched a massive air operation against bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, killing atleast 40 rebels. More than 50 Turkish jets were involved in the six hours raid.

The overnight operation came after 16 Turkish soldiers were killed in the Kurdish dominated southeast of the country on Sunday in an attack blamed on the PKK.

Pope Francis on Thursday urged the world to act quickly to prevent “extraordinary” climate change from destroying the planet and said wealthy countries must bear responsibility for creating the problem and for solving it. In a radically worded letter addressed to every person on the planet, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics blames human greed for the critical situation “Our Sister, mother Earth” now finds itself in.

“This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her,” he writes in his long-anticipated Encyclical on the environment.

Arguing that environmental damage is intimately linked to global inequality, he goes on to say that doomsday predictions can no longer be dismissed and that: “The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”

Green activists hailed the charismatic Argentinian pontiff’s widely-trailed intervention as a potential game-changer in the debate over what causes global warming and how to reverse it. “Everyone, whether religious or secular, can and must respond to this clarion call for bold urgent action,”said Kumi Naido, the International Executive Director of Greenpeace.

Environmentalists hope the pope’s message will significantly increase the pressure for binding restrictions on carbon emissions to be agreed at global talks in Paris at the end of this year. But even before the official publication, climate change sceptics had dismissed the document’s argument that the phenomenon is primarily man-made and that humanity can reverse it through lifestyle changes including an early phasing-out of fossil fuels.

“I don’t get economic policy from my bishops or my cardinal or my pope,” US presidential candidate Jeb Bush said on the eve of the release in comments that underlined the depth of opposition in the United States to a binding agreement to curb greenhouse gases.

G7 Leaders Assure Pres. Buhari Of Their Support

The G7 group of industrialized nations has resolved to support the new Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari.

This followed the group’s acknowledgment of the way and manner of his emergence and the tremendous challenges faced by the government he leads, not of his making, especially in its efforts to combat the Boko Haram.

A statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the President said that “at the end of the presentation he made on Monday, the G7 leaders said to him that they recognized the President’s massive amount of confidence and expectations behind his government.

They acknowledged him as having emerged from an election adjudged to be the freest in the country’s electoral history, but regretted the severe handicaps his new government has to face from the outset.

“They told President Buhari that they took cognizance of the fact of the several handicaps, including the lack of resources, leaving him with a government over-stretched in capacity, itself riddled with mismanagement. They noted that the country’s army lacked training and equipment with little or no will to engage.

“In recognition of the fact that the security threat of the Boko Haram had gone beyond Nigeria, equally affecting other countries in the region, the G7 conceded that no one country can tackle it alone.

“They expressed warm sentiments towards the Nigerian leader and praised him for reaching out to the country’s neighbours and the group of industrialized nations within a week of his takeover of government.

“In view of the seriousness he has shown in tacking this problem, the group pledged that they would “engage, cooperate and collaborate” with President Buhari’s government in tackling the serious problems that Nigeria faces.

“They left it to President Buhari to come up with the specifics on his requirements, assuring that they would study the requirements either individually or collectively and offer help. They asked to know the nature and the scale of the problems in order to know the nature and the scale of the assistance they will provide. Suffice it to say that they assured President Buhari that ‘Nigeria will find a partner in the G7.’”

President Buhari, who had the privilege of being the first to address the G7 among the invited presidents and prime ministers was warmly received at the summit. He returned to Nigeria in the early hours of Tuesday, 9 June.

Obama Attacked for Missing Unity Rally in Paris Sunday

World leaders – forty of them (French station BFM said 44) – joined the people in Paris, including French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The Ukraine sent President Petro Poroshenko and Russia, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Though French President Holland asked them not to, according to Haaretz, even Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put aside their differences long enough to join in common purpose in a march down Boulevard Voltaire.

But not President Barack Obama. It was not a secret or a surprise, since Agence France-Presse had reported he would not be there, and even the Russian news agency, Tass, had reportedhe would be absent.

It is not clear why he did not attend, whether it was security concerns (critics point out other world leaders were able to get around this concern) or for some other reason. WhiteHouse.gov shows no public schedule for the president on Sunday.

Secretary of State John Kerry was in India for a trade conference, meeting with another absent world leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the White House has not explained President Obama’s absence, or that of Vice President Joe Biden. Attorney General Eric Holder was in Paris and attending security meetings as well as taping interviews for American news shows,excluding Fox News.
