I Have Declared My Assets To The Relevant Authorities, I Don’t Need To Make It Public – Wike

Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike says he has declared his assets to the relevant authorities and is not compelled to make it public. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, Wike said what is important in asset declaration is the sincerity behind it …

“The governor has declared his assets and this is exactly what he told newsmen during the tour of his administration’s projects. There is no law compelling him to make his declaration public. He has declared his assets and the declaration was made to the relevant authority. Let me also say that it is not just about asset declaration; it has to do with the sincerity of the person because some may over-declare when they want to steal in future. So, they declare to accommodate the theft in future.

Some may also declare for whatever reason; maybe they have held public offices in the past and they don’t want people to know that they have stolen money. So, people will declare; it is not all about the declaration of assets. What is crucial is the sincerity of the person declaring and you are supposed to declare when you get out of office. But the truth is that if you are a governor or a minister, what matters is the delivery of the dividends of democracy. That is what is important and it is not about what you declare and how much you declare.” Wike said

President Buhari May Be Africa’s Least Corrupt Leader- Report

Following the declaration of asset by President Muhammadu Buhari, which puts his savings at $150,000 (N30m ), The Washington Post has said in one of its’ report that Buhari may be the least corrupt in Africa.

Buhari-asset1According to the reports which was tied to obtainable standards of other sub-Saharan African leaders, Buhari was described as being ‘dirt-poor’.

Recall that a statement released by  Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President,  Garba Shehu, reveals that Buhari has N30m ($150,000) in his savings account, owns five homes and two mud houses, an orchard and ranch with 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses and a variety of birds. He has bought two cars from his savings.

“President Buhari had no foreign account, no factory and no enterprises. He also had no registered company and no oil wells,” reads the statement released by the spokesman, Garba Shehu, describing the president’s assets as “Spartan.”

The Washington Post stated, “Corruption, after all, is a major problem in Africa’s largest economy. Buhari himself has publicly said that more than $150 billion is missing from the government’s coffers. Still, the public declaration appears to be an attempt to show some much-needed transparency. Buhari was elected in March largely by promising that he wouldn’t tolerate corruption.

‘What’s clear is that Buhari has done what his predecessors — and most other African leaders — have never done.’

However, It was stated in the report that the question on many minds is: Is Buhari, Nigeria’s former military ruler and ex-head of the oil ministry, telling the truth?
