5 Killed As Villagers Mistook Soldiers For Herdsmen In Niger

Five people were feared killed in a clash between soldiers and villagers at Kpaidna village near Beji of Bosso local government area of Niger state.
The number of people injured could not be ascertained, but it was learnt that four vehicles were destroyed while the crisis lasted.

Sources said the incident occurred about 1 am yesterday when the villagers, mistaking the soldiers in an operation for armed Fulani herders, opened fire on them, leading to violent exchanges that led to the death of the five people. An officer and two soldiers are reportedly missing.
It was learnt that a clash between herders and villagers in Barkuta, a community close to where the current incident happened resulted in the death of villagers recently, while a reprisal led to the demise of three herders.
Both the deputy governor, Ahmed Mohammed Ketso and the commissioner of information, culture and tourism, Jonathan Vatsa, who were on hand to access the situation, were prevented from entering the community.
Vatsa said on phone that he could not get into the village because of strong presence of the military.
The Niger State Police Public Relation Officer Bala Elkana confirmed the incident, saying,  “About 1 am we received a report that armed men were attacking Kpaidna village but when we arrived we discovered that they were soldiers in operation.”
He said they gathered that the villagers mistook the soldiers for Fulani herders camouflaging in military uniform to attack the village.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Njideka Agwu, said, “We heard there were arms and ammunition in that village and we went for cordon and search after soldiers were briefed yesterday. Unfortunately, villagers opened fire on us and we don’t know the number of casualty for now because the information is sketchy, but investigation is still on.”

Man Gets 25 Years Jail Term For Infecting Villagers With HIV

A Cambodian man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday for infecting 270 people with HIV while he was working as an unlicensed doctor in a village. Yem Chrin, 57, was arrested in December 2014 after a routine health check revealed unusually high numbers of HIV-positive villagers in Battambang province’s Roka commune in western Cambodia.

On Thursday, he was found guilty of torture with aggravating circumstances, operating a clinic without a licence, and intentionally spreading HIV, said Toch Sopheakdey, a spokesman for the Battambang Provincial Court of First Instance. Besides a 25-year sentence, Chrin also faces a five-million-riel fine (1,235 dollars).

“This sends a clear message to the other doctors nationwide who are providing medical treatment without a licence to be aware,” Sopheakdey told newsmen. An investigation by UNAIDS, the World Health Organization and local authorities traced the outbreak to Chrin and his reuse of tainted needles.

Baga: Army Investigates Villagers

The Nigerian military, which reported success in the fight against terrorists in Baga this past weekend, is probing if some women claiming to be villagers are linked to the Boko Haram terror group.

This follows the stabbing of a soldier while another was shot during a close quarter battle which ensued  as troops involved in cordon and search caught up with some of the fleeing terrorists on Saturday evening. “A number of individuals who claimed to be residents are also being interrogated in order to ascertain their identity and motive,” said Chris Olukolade, Major General: Director Defence Information

“The group consisting mostly women continued to hail and cheer the troops as they conduct thorough search in the area. Wanting to be sure the group was not working for the terrorists despite the excitement, they had to be placed under watch.”

Meanwhile, Olukolade said troops engaged in cordon and search in Baga continue to discover more arms “of various background and shapes” abandoned in some houses and the surrounding areas by fleeing terrorists.

“Heaps of weapons most of which were strange looking or destroyed are still being gathered. Many abandoned or destroyed motorcycles have also been discovered.”

He said the cordon and search as well as patrol of the localities continue while the offensive on terrorists was progressing in other areas of the theatre of the counter terrorist campaign.
