Jammeh ‘Sacks’ US Ambassador Who Urged Him To Concede

The Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has sacked the US ambassador who called for him to accept defeat to Adama Barrow in elections this month, according to a letter written by the ambassador.

In a letter being shared on social media bearing the embassy’s official stamp, Ambassador Omar Faye writes:

I would like to inform my friends, colleagues and all Gambians that I have been recalled for home service.

The ambassador says he will stand down willingly, adding he’s like the long-serving ruler to follow his example:

I hope and pray that president Jammeh will likewise hand over to President Elect Adama Barrow.

He finishes his letter by urging all authorities, especially the army, which observers say is the key to the outcome of The Gambia’s election crisis, to respect Mr Barrow’s win in the 1 December election:

I am hereby reminding all Gambian officials, civil servants and military personnel [that] they are serving the people of The Gambia and must protect its security, peace and prosperity.

As a former military officer, I was taught loyalty to country FIRST. I hope the armed and security forces will uphold the WILL of The Gambian people made on December 1, 2016.”

Trump Nominates US Ambassador To Israel

US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated David Friedman, a hardline Zionist, as US ambassador to Israel, likely paving the way toward a controversial decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds

Friedman, a fervent supporter of illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine and opponent of the so-called two-state solution, served as one of Trump’s main advisers on Israel during his presidential campaign.

“(Friedman) has been a long-time friend and trusted adviser to me. His strong relationships in Israel will form the foundation of his diplomatic mission and be a tremendous asset to our country as we strengthen the ties with our allies and strive for peace in the Middle East,” Trump said in a statement Thursday.

Friedman said he looked forward to filling the diplomatic position at a future US embassy in Jerusalem al-Quds, a move that would distance Washington from most of the international community, including its closest allies in Western Europe and the Arab world.

Trump vowed during his presidential campaign that he would move the US Embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds, a step that would enrage Palestinians and create an international furor.

Former US Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush promised the same thing during their presidential campaigns in order to court pro-Israel voters, but later reversed their proposals.

Sex Scandal: Reps Accuse US Ambassador Of Racial Bias

One of the three members of the House of Representatives accused of alleged sexual misconduct by the outgoing United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, yesterday accused the envoy of racial bias stating that the allegations are premeditated.

Hon. Mark Gbillah who made the declaration yesterday while making his presentation at the investigative hearing on the allegations, insisted that he was wrongly accused and would do everything legally possible to clear his name.

He said: “The US Ambassador from the onset had a condescending attitude towards us as a group. He was scheduled to meet with us but never did.

“Even when I met him at a function, I walked up to him and introduced myself as one of the participants of the programme, he condemningly responded that I was one of the members who embarrassed him in his country. It was in that brief encounter that I learnt of the allegation and even advised him to make a formal report not aware that I was part of the supposed persons.

“Cleveland and Ohio as a state is known for racism. There have been cases where non-whites were accused for offences that turned out to be false. Recently, a man of Arabian extraction was accused of being a member of ISIS by a clerk of a hotel just because he was dressed in an Arabian attire and spoke Arabic. He was arrested but later found to be innocent”, he stated.

“The ambassador is not exempted from this racial prejudice given his background and he made this manifest in the way and manner he handled this issue.

US Ambassador Attacked in South Korea

The US ambassador to South Korea has been attacked by a knife-wielding man shouting anti-war slogans during a public event at an arts centre in Seoul.

The ambassador, Mark Lippert, was assaulted during a breakfast conference on Thursday as he was preparing to give a lecture about prospects for peace on the divided Korean Peninsula.

The US embassy said Lippert was in stable condition after surgery at a Seoul hospital. Hours after the attack Lippert tweeted that he is “doing well and in great spirits”.

The suspect, identified by police as Kim Ki-jong, 55, was immediately apprehended at the scene. Police said he slashed Lippert on the face and wrist with a knife. Kim had a previous conviction for hurling a stone at the then Japanese ambassador to Seoul in 2010, police said.

“We have detained him and are investigating the cause of the attack and other circumstances,” said district police chief Yoon Myung-soon.

Sources told Al Jazeera that Kim is the head of a relatively small civic organisation that has been calling for peace and reconciliation with North Korea.
