University of Jos dissolves SUG over new tuition

The University of Jos has dissolved the institution’s Students Union Government (SUG).

This is contained in a statement issued in Jos on Wednesday by Abdullahi Abdullahi, the school’s Principal Assistant Registrar, Information.

According to the statement, the university has constituted a five-man Caretaker Committee in place of the SUG.

The statement quoted the UniJos Vice-Chancellor, Sebastian Maimako, as giving reasons for the dissolution to include protest by the SUG against the new school charges of N45, 000 as directed by the Federal Government.

Other reasons, the statement said, included the SUG’s decision to convene a meeting of students without due approval from the Directorate of Students Affairs, which resulted in a protest with the students carrying placards.

It added that the SUG officials had similarly mobilised students to attend a meeting where parents were shouted down.

“They externalised an internal issue, affecting the university without following the acceptable laid down procedures for conflict resolution in the university.

“They were also intimidating and issuing threats to law abiding students, including fresh students who were willing to comply with the payment of the new school charges.

“The SUG officials also maligned principal officers of the university, including the VC on various media platforms.

“Using the social media, they misinformed members of the public on the action taken by the university authorities in the process of implementing the new school charges,” the statement read in part.

According to the statement, management had on several occasions invited the SUG officials to dialogue on the matter of the harmonised school charges for federal universities, but they remained intransigent and refused to see reasons.

It added that the students, by all the actions taken by the dissolved SUG officials, clearly indicated their desire to disrupt the smooth running of the institution.

The vice chancellor, in the statement, therefore, directed the dissolved SUG officials to handover all properties belonging to the union in their possession with immediate effect.

Mr. Maimako, thereafter, announced the constitution of a five-man caretaker committee of the SUG with Wuyep Nansar as chairman.

It also announced Timdi Nkat as Secretary, Yilmazaka Gershinen, Idi Ishaku and Ekweozor Nzube as members.

According to the statement, the vice chancellor charged the committee to maintain the spirit of discipline and dedication in line with the university’s motto.

Mr. Nansar, on behalf of the other members of the committee, promised their readiness to put in their best to contribute to the peace and progress of the institution.

He said they would use their wealth of experience to work with the students, management and all for the benefit of the system.

Jos varsity students reject N45,000 fee, urges management to be considerate

Students of the University of Jos have kicked against the N45,000 new school fees, and appealed to management to be “more considerate in view of the hard times”.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sabastian Maimako, recently announced the review of the fees, from N27,000 to N45,000, citing dwindling budgetary allocations, rising bills and the need to upgrade some materials.

Maimako said that the figure was endorsed by parents, old students and other stakeholders at a meeting in Jos, where all factors were considered.

But Mr Sydney Daman, President of the institution’s chapter of the Students Union Government (SUG), who briefed newsmen on Friday in Jos, described the new charges as “too harsh”.

“The university attributed the increase to the economic recession, but it is clear that students are worst hit by current realities,” he said.

Daman appealed to the students to “hold-on a bit”.

“No student should be in a hurry to pay the new fees. We are consulting with management and shall communicate the final agreement to everyone,” he said

He said that the students union had met with management “three times”, where it discussed the fee issue and sought for a figure that was favourable for both parties, but that management eventually did as it wished.

“We have not exhausted all the options; we are still appealing and shall continue to meet all stakeholders,” he said.

Daman, however, called on students to be “responsible, mature and peaceful” while supporting the struggle for a downward review of the charges.

The students’ leader faulted management’s claim that parents and guardians had accepted the hike at a stakeholders meeting.

“The university has 18,000 students; less than 100 parents/guardians attended the meeting, while SUG officials who attended the meeting were barred from talking. So, it is not right to claim that there was fair hearing,” he said.

On the Killing of Students in University of Jos: The Military has One week to Take Action

It is with a deep heart and sorrow over the reports that Nigerian military shot dead two students protesting in UniJos on 25 of November. The students who were involved in a relatively peaceful protest, were sent to their graves by the forces who swore to defend our dear country.

The protest which was triggered over a sudden 100 percent increase of tuition fees from 10 thousand, to 20 thousand Naira. That development made the students to protest in order to call the attention of the university management to stop the proposed increment.

A full scale investigation must be carried out to in order to find the truth and take appropriate measures. Nigerian students who are by large part of the Nigerian youths will not fold their arms and watch the future of this country to be ruined by Nigerian security agencies.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, National Youth Council, and Arewa Students Forum should give two weeks ultimatum to the Military to investigate and prosecute the errant officers that killed those students. Live bullets shouldn’t have been used in a mere demonstration of students. Even if live bullets are to be used, the military officers should have shoot in the air not on the chest of the protesting students.
May the soul of those martyrs rest in perfect peace.
