I got N2 million for kidnap of Isheri Estate Secretary – Kidnapper

The alleged mastermind of the kidnap of Lagos Isheri North Estate Secretary, Dayo Adekoya, Joseph Omoni, has been arrested. He was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Abba Kyari.

The 38-year-old suspect, who hails from Ajapa community, Ese in Ondo State, was arrested in Century Village, Ogijo town, in Ogun State. The suspect was alleged to have also participated in the kidnap of the Nigerian Turkish school girls and officials and also the December kidnapping operation at Ikorodu, where a popular TV presenter, Aisha Ali-Balogun, was killed.

The suspect confessed that he only got N250,000 from the ransom paid for the release of the Isheri North estate secretary. “I got N250,000 from the ransom because the sum paid was too small, but for the Nigerian Turkish International College, I got N2 million. I was also involved in the kidnap on Ikorodu Road, where Aisha Balogun was killed. We didn’t know her until we read in the papers that she was a TV presenter. I got about N1 million from that ransom.

In another development, abductors of the two members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and five farm workers of Eliasa Livestock farm, who were kidnapped in Igbodu area of Epe on Tuesday have demanded the sum of N50 million as ransom from families of their victims.

His house where he was arrested

The gunmen, it was learnt, contacted the manager of the farm using the phone of one of the victims yesterday and asked for a whooping N50 million for their seven victims.

According to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 command, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, “we are going to rescue the victims alive. We are doing everything to police that area; but the major problem in that part of the state is that the area is porous. It gives room for kidnapping to thrive.

“We will police that area 24 hours every day but my advice to business owners and school operators is that they should be security conscious and do their background checks on anybody they want to employ. We are also going to do our own job to see to the release of the victims without paying a dime to the abductors,” he said.

A senior police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “On February 14, around 4a.m. after unrelenting follow up by IRT with technical intelligence unit, one of the Isheri Estate secretary and Turkish school kids kidnappers, Joseph Omoni, was arrested.”

The police officer said one kingpin simply identified as ‘chairman’ has also been identified to be hiding in the same Century Village at Ogijo, but assured that he would soon be arrested as detectives has condone off the area. He said the police were making effort to apprehend other members of the gang.

Police arrest more Turkish school kidnap suspects, recover N3 million cash.

Following last week’s rescue of the students and employees of the Nigerian Turkish International College (NTIC) in Ogun State, the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) yesterday arrested two more suspects and recovered N3 million.

The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Egbasimokumo Ayeomi, a native of Arogbo Town and 21-year-old Super Alex of Opugba Town, both from Eseodo Local Council of Ondo State.

Led by the IRT boss, Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, the suspects were rounded up at the Ikorodu area of Lagos. They were arrested after they had stepped out of the creeks to move to Ondo State with their share of the loot.

Already, the duo have confessed to the kidnapping of the schoolgirls and many other kidnappings within Lagos and Ogun states.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the arrest was based on intelligence gathering and clear-cut technology that tracked the mobile phones and bank details of the suspect.

According to the source, the suspects are already giving useful information to the police, which will lead to the arrest of more suspects.

Police pick high-profile suspects in Turkish school kidnappings

The police yesterday disclosed that ‘high-profile suspects’ had been arrested in connection with the kidnap of pupils and employees of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NITIC) in Isheri area of Ogun State.

This was disclosed by the Ogun State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ahmed Iliyasu, when he led the victims, the managing director of the school, Mr. Orhan Kertim and others on a visit to the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun at his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta office.

The eight victims were kidnapped from the school on Friday, January 13 and were released by their abductors on Tuesday night.

“With the deployment of the technically-driven team of intelligence response system of the Inspector General of Police yesterday, the miscreants behind this incident caved in and eight of them were rescued,” Iliyasu stated.

Managing Director of the school, Kertim, thanked President Mohammadu Buhari, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, all the security agencies, as well as those who assisted in getting the victims released. “It was a very difficult time for all of us. For 11 days, there were not only sleepless nights and hopes but also prayers and we never lost hope.”

Deputy Managing Director of The Sun Newspaper, Mr. Steve Nwosu, who is a parent of one of the victims, in his brief remark, said: “We were all in this together and we are very happy as parents that the nightmare has ended.”

The governor assured that schools in the state would henceforth have security mapping and tracking installations to prevent possible reoccurrence.

“I know paramilitary agencies were involved; even our local vigilance group and our Baales (village heads) but let me say that we are reviewing things and I’m sure that we will soon call a meeting. What we are putting in place is to do some kind of mapping/tracking.”

Also, in an interaction with newsmen in Lagos yesterday, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone II, Kayode Aderanti, confirmed the arrest of one of the kidnap suspect but denied knowledge of the payment of a N50 million ransom, insisting that the kidnappers succumbed to superior pressure from the police.

Aderanti said they gave up after they realised that their identities were known by policemen, adding that some of their relatives were held to pressure them into releasing the victims.

Although Aderanti declined to give further details on the arrest, it was gathered that the suspect was picked in Lagos as soon as he fled the creek where the victims were held. The Guardian gathered that the suspect had in his possession some of the ransom paid by parents and relatives of the victims.

“The victims were taken to a hospital in Ikeja. All the victims are in good health and the school management on Wednesday took them to meet with the Ogun State governor. It is complete falsehood to say the police didn’t do anything to rescue the victims. It is wrong for anyone to say the police took glory for what it didn’t do. We were working day and night and so many relatives of the kidnappers were held to mount pressure on the abductors to release the victims,” he said.

Finally, kidnappers free students of Turkish school.

The students and staff of Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in Ogun state, who were abducted 11 days ago, have regained freedom.

A source told TheCable that their abductors released them late Tuesday, but that the captives trekked for three hours before they could get to the school premises.

Cemal Yigit, spokesman of the school, confirmed the release of the students, saying they had reunited with their parents and family members.

“we wish to inform the general public that the kidnapped students and staff of the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) Ogun state, have regained freedom,” he said in a statement.

“The victims were released this evening after a painstaking collaborative effort by the relevant security agencies in the country.  The management of NTIC wishes to express our gratitude to the relevant security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the three students, one Turkish teacher, a cook and three supervisors.

“We also wish to extend our appreciation to the government and good people of Ogun state for their support throughout the difficult period. The role of the Ogun state government is highly appreciated.

“Our special appreciation also goes to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Chief of Army Staff, and others too numerous to mention for their efforts.

“The students and teachers are doing fine and have reunited with their parents. We also wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the parents and guardians of NTIC Ogun, for their support all through the period.”

Earlier, Kayode Aderanti, assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) , zone 2, had given the assurance that they would be released within 24 hours.

Aderanti said this shortly after visiting former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his hill top residence in Abeokuta.

He said that he spoke with the leader of the search team and that he got a positive response from him.

He denied the reports that the families of the victims had been paying ransom, insisting that “no ransom has been paid”.

Aderanti urged residents of Ogun to partner with the police to ensure that lives and property were properly secured.

A day after the incident, Yigit had explained how the attackers invaded the school.

“At about 9.30pm local time on January 13, a group of people armed with dangerous weapons gained entrance to the girls’ section through different means and held hostage three female supervisors, a female cook, a female teacher (Turkish) and three students,” he had said.

“The school security noticed some movement on the CCTV camera at the girls’ section and promptly deployed security personnel and alerted the relevant security agencies in the area as customary. Upon hearing the security alarm activated and sighting our security personnel, the armed invaders opened fire on the security staff and managed to escape through a very dangerous route with the hostages.

“The security agencies are currently on their trail as the whole area has been cordoned off.”
