Reactions Trail 9% Communication Tax Bill

More stakeholders in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT), have kicked against the nine per cent communication service tax bill, waitng for the public reading at the National Assembly (NASS).
This bill, when passed into law,  would add to more drain in the dwindling  financial strength of most telecoms users in the country and this may lead to stunt broadband growth in the country.
With the bill becoming law, each operators would have no choice than add the nine per  cent to services of the end users. Most Nigerians are barely surviving on one dollar per day and with this new introduction,  many Subscribers Identity Module (SIMs), may become inactive in the nearest future if this bill is imposed on the Nigerian telecom industry.
Telecoms users will cough out huge sum of money for SMS, MMS, voice calls, data,  watsapp and Pay TV, and that could be avoided because they already pay indirectly for VAT for every recharge they do on their mobile phone.
Although, stakeholders believe that taxation is one of the many ways through which governments all over the world generate income to be able to discharge their duties to the citizens. However, they caution the sponsor of the bill and NASS on passing the bill into law.
According to the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu,  the introduction of new taxes without harmonizing existing ones will put pressure on the Nigerian tax system, thereby making it unattractive to investors and may consequently be counter-productive in the long run for the nation’s targets on broadband penetration and end users.

Troops Trail Boko Haram Terrorists Fleeing To Taraba

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Wednesday, said the Army was on the trail of Boko Haram terrorists who fled Sambisa and were hiding in Taraba.

Buratai said this when he paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba, in continuation of his tour of Army formations in the state.

He said the Army had strong reasons to believe that some of the terrorists that fled Sambisa were taking refuge in parts of Taraba.

He added that “Taraba has not been affected by this insurgency since it started except for the recent incidences that are related to Boko Haram especially as they are being pushed out of Borno.

“We strongly suspect some of them are currently parading themselves around this state; we are working on our intelligence and information from some good citizens.

“We are banking on support about their movement and we are equally tracking them so that we get them as soon as we can.”

The Army boss then urged Nigerians to support the military “to finally clear the remaining hideouts of the insurgents.”

He said timely sharing of information on the movement of suspicious persons would go a long way in containing the insurgents.

He assured citizens of Taraba and the North East in general of the military’s determination to finally end the menace of insurgency in the region.

On the invasion of communities by suspected cattle herders, Buratai said troops were also on the trail of the suspects.

He said that the Army, in conjunction with other security agencies, were working hard to contain the menace.

According to him, troops are combing the bush and areas in search of the suspects all over the country.

He expressed optimism that the situation would be arrested in the nearest future.

On his part, the state governor commended the efforts of the military in addressing threats of security across the country.

Ishaku informed the army chief of the various threats to peace that had plagued the state for a while.

He sought the assistance of the Nigerian Army in tackling the challenges, especially in the border communities of the state.

Ishaku reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to support security agencies in the discharge of their duties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chief of army staff is scheduled to visit army formations in Takum and Sarti areas of the state.

Conflicting Death Toll Trail Dalori Attack

The National Emergency Management Agency has put the death toll in the attacks on Dalori village in Borno State at 65 which is less than the earlier figure of 85.

In a statement on Monday by the spokesman for the agency, Sani Datti, NEMA said 65 persons lost their lives and 136 persons injured in the weekend attacks.

Earlier report on Sunday say 85 persons were killed while 62 others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Maiduguri the capital  of the state.

Most of those affected were fleeing women and children who ran into suicide bombers in a nearby village, an official of the National Emergency Management Agency said.

Dalori, which is less than 10km from Maiduguri, came under attacks on Saturday evening, with the agency’s Emergency Response Team immediately mobilised for rescue along with the Police Anti bomb Squad, NSCDC, Nigerian Army, Federal Road Safety Corps and Nigerian Red Cross.

Victims were evacuated to Umaru Shehu Hospital, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Borno General Hospital for medical attention and 40 persons were confirmed dead.

According to NEMA, the community buried 25 deaths beside those that were taken to the hospitals.

Explaining the incident, the agency said that the suspected insurgents came into the village and started shooting sporadically.

“This put the villagers and the neighbourhood into pandemonium, with residents running helter-skelter.

“Some of the villagers that succeeded in moving out, including those in the nearby IDPs camp (Dalori Camp II), gathered under a big three where people normally gather in the evening to do menial trading activities.

“Unknown to them, one of the suicide bombers sneaked into their midst and detonated explosive devices killing scores of people and injuring many,” NEMA further explained.

8bn Bad Notes Fraud: 6 CBN Official, 16 Bankers Face Trial

Six officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and 16 bankers who allegedly engaged in sharp practices over mutilated currency notes are in big trouble and will have their days in court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has concluded plans to arraign six top executives of the CBN and 16 other bankers working with commercial banks, following their alleged implication in a mega scam involving the theft and recirculation of defaced and mutilat-ed currencies.

The indicted CBN officials are Patience Okoro-Eye ( Abuja) , Afolabi Olufemi (Lagos), Kolawole Babalola (Ibadan), Olaniran Muniru Adeola (Ibadan), Fatai Yusuf, Adekunle (Head, Security, CBN, (Ibadan) and Ilori Adekunle Sunday (Akure).

The lid on the scam, widely suspected to have gone on unchecked for years, was blown on November 3, 2014 via a petition to the EFCC alleging that over N6.58billion was cornered and discreetly recycled by top executives of the CBN at the Ibadan branch.

This sparked off the investigation by the EFCC.

The deposit banks in this instance. are Zenith Bank, FCMB, Wema Bank, Access Bank, First Bank, Skye Bank, Ecobank and Sterling Bank.

While carrying out the assignment, the investigation team was alleged to have found one of the currency boxes filled only with old newspapers rather than 20 bundles of N1000 notes.

The suspects, who were drawn from various business units of the apex bank, will be arraigned on a five-count charge by the EFCC before a Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, between tomorrow and Thursday.

The EFCC spokesperson, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed the devel-opment, further disclosed that the remaining 16 suspects are drawn from various commercial banks, who were found to have conspired with the CBN executives to swing the heist.

“The suspects, who were members of the Briquetting Panel, plotted their way to infamy on September 8, 2014, while carrying out a Briquetting exercise at the CBN Branch, Ibadan. In banking parlance, Briquetting is disintegration and destruction of counted and audited dirty notes. By this practice, depositor banks usually take mutilated notes to the CBN in exchange for fresh notes equivalent of the amount deposited,” he said.

“Instead of carrying out the statutory instruction to destroy the currency, they (the suspects) substituted it with newspapers neatly cut to Naira sizes and proceeded to recycle the defaced and mutilated currency.”
