Soldiers Invade Tompolo’s Town Kurutie (Little London)

Soldiers swooped on Kurutie (Little London), another community in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State, ?in six gunboats at about 4.30 am, today (Monday) , hunting for members of the Niger Delta Avengers.

The residents were asleep when they came, but many scampered into the bush when heard the sound of the gunboats. The soldiers, who quickly cordoned the community, embarked on a house to house search. “I am looking at the soldiers from a hideout in the bush, they are going from house to house. We know their tactics, so we ran away when they landed this morning at the jetty in the town, belonging to Tompolo’s father,” an informant said on phone at abot 5.30am.

Tompolo has repeatedly denied having any link with the Niger Delta Avengers, but the military seemed to disbelieve him , and were chasing him.

It was gathered that Tompolo’s father was not in Kurutie when soldiers stormed the town this morning, but an over 70-year-old man, simply identified as Do Good Ikekama, is among the citizens allegedly molested and forced to take the soldiers around some homes.

Ijaw leader, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, confirmed the siege to Kurutie. He said that despite? the appeal by the Gbaramatu monarch, HRM Oboro Gbaraun II, to the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (retd) that the soldiers should be professional in their duties, they were still harassing people. However, the soldiers, according to reports, left the community at about 6.30am ?.

Mayor Wanted For Running Her Town Via WhatsApp

BBC reports 25-year-old Lidiane Leite, mayor of Brazilian town Bom Jardim, is on the run from law enforcement after it was discovered that she didn’t actually live in Bom Jardim and was running the town via WhatsApp.

Leite ran for office in 2012 in the small town after her then-boyfriend Beto Rocha was banned from running due to corruption charges against him. She stepped in to run for mayor in his place, and when she won, she appointed Rocha as her advisor, though the two broke up earlier this year.

Prosecutors then discovered that she was living 170 miles away from Bom Jardim in the town of Maranhao and that the only contact she had with the people in Bom Jardim was when she used WhatsApp to contact her Cabinet members. The BBC reports that Leite is also being investigated for misappropriating the equivalent of around $4 million in state education funds.

Boko Haram Recaptures Town In Borno State

Boko Haram militants retook the town of Marte in Borno state, which had been liberated in February, the state deputy governor said.

“It is sad as we have been made to understand that Marte is today completely fallen under the control of the insurgents, which to us is a very huge set back,” Borno’s deputy governor Zannah Umar Mustapha said.

The recapture of the town followed two strikes this week on state capital Maiduguri, which left at least 12 people dead.

Suspected militants also attacked the village of Kojiti, killing seven people in the Madagali local government of neighbouring Adamawa state. It had been cleared of the Islamist militant group in late February.

Boko Haram took over a territory larger than Belgium last year, killing thousands of people and displacing some 1.5 million. The group’s six-year insurgency is part of its bid to establish an Islamist state.

It took the combined efforts of Nigerian, Chadian and Nigerien troops to push them out of most of the areas, while Cameroon repelled border attacks.

The Sambisa forest reserve remains their last major stronghold. “Our thinking was that every other place should have been blocked so that the insurgency would be curtailed to a restricted area,” Mustapha said. “But that has not been the case because the insurgents have been fleeing to other communities.”

Boko Haram Retakes Border Town From Army

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have forced hundreds of soldiers to flee Marte, a border town along the shores of the Lake Chad, a local official and witnesses said Friday. “The terrorists, numbering over 2,000, appeared from various directions on Thursday and engaged the soldiers in Kirenowa town and adjoining communities in Marte,” said Imamu Habeeb, a local community leader.

“They fought with soldiers over the night and the fight continued today (Friday), forcing hundreds of soldiers to flee,” he added from Borno state capital Maiduguri.

Local fighter Shehu Dan Baiwa said the more than 2,000 fighters had been armed with bombs and tanks. “They used the weapons without restraint and succeeded in killing several people,” he said. This is the third time Boko Haram has seized control of Marte in Borno state.

The city is among several retaken in recent weeks by the military, which has launched an offensive against the Islamists as part of a regional operation supported by Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

But Boko Haram have been fighting back, and Nigerian troops were also forced to retreat from Boko Haram’s Sambisa Forest stronghold this week after a landmine blast killed one soldier and three vigilantes.

A senior local politician confirmed, on condition of anonymity, that the insurgents had retaken Marte. “We lost many (people) because some of our people that fled to Chad and Cameroon have return after Nigerian troops recovered the town recently,” he added.

A senior military official confirmed the attack on Marte, but refused to say whether Boko Haram had retaken the town, describing the army’s retreat as “strategic”.

INEC Holds Town Hall Meeting

INEC on Monday held a town hall meeting with stakeholders involved in the 2015 electoral process. The meeting afforded the stakeholders and members of the public the opportunity to ask the commission questions bordering on its preparedness for the general elections.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega led other top officials of the commission to the event. Jega, who responded to most of the questions clarified some misconceptions concerning the elections.

On the failure of card readers, Jega says it has been agreed with political parties that accreditation will be suspended if a card reader fails and that a new card reader will be replaced within the time frame of the accreditation. He added that accreditation time will be extended to cover for the lost time.

On the on provision of security for the elections and arguments for/against the deployment of soldiers, Jega noted that role of the military, as defined in the constitution, is for the them to provide support to civil authorities if there is a breakdown of law and order.

He stated the military participated in the 2011 election within the confines of the constitution to provide military support to the police if there is breakdown of order.

On the clamour  for his resignation, he maintained that he was not ready to step down from the job, saying doing that at this period would be a disservice to the nation. He insisted he has not committed any offence to warrant him to resign.
