Samsung Phone Fire Not Caused By Battery- Supplier

A supplier to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) said on Monday that its battery does not appear to have caused a Galaxy Note 7 smartphone to ignite in China, after Chinese media reported one of the handsets caught fire.

The incident comes amid a recall of the Note 7 phones across the globe including South Korea and the United States due to faulty batteries causing the devices to catch fire while charging or in normal use. Samsung has said it has sold 2.5 million phones equipped with the suspect batteries.

Late on Sunday, Chinese online financial magazine Caixin cited an internet user’s report that their Note 7 phone, bought from JD.com Inc (JD.O), had caught fire in what appeared to be the first report in China of a fire involving the handset.

Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) said it conducted a joint investigation with Samsung on the phone in question and determined the incident was not directly linked to a battery made by the China-based firm.

“According to the burn marks on the sample, we surmise that the source of the heating comes from outside the battery, and it’s very likely that there was an external factor causing the heating problem,” the battery maker said in a statement.

An ATL official confirmed to Reuters one of its batteries was in the Note 7 phone that reportedly caught fire and that the heating problem was caused by something other than the battery.

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the phone was damaged by an external heat source, possibly an induction oven or a fan heater. The person was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and so declined to be identified.

Nigerian Navy Arrests Niger Delta Avengers’ Major Logistics Supplier

The Nigerian Navy (NN) said it had arrested a suspected member of the Niger Delta Avengers. This is contained in a statement signed by its Director of Information, Commodore Christian Ezekobe, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

According to Ezekobe, the suspect who was picked up on July 11 at about 11 a.m., is believed to be a major logistics supplier to the group which had claimed responsibility for attacks on NNPC and Chevron pipelines in the region.

“The arrest was made following a confessional statement obtained from an earlier arrested suspect who gave details of the involvement of other collaborators in the attacks.

“Preliminary investigations also revealed that the suspect recently supplied 10 batteries, five large coils of wire and other materials purportedly used for the attacks,’’ the director said. The NN said it would continue to partner with sister security agencies and members of the public to eliminate all forms of economic sabotage such as vandalisation of pipelines and piracy.

BUSTED!!! Boko Haram Food, Fuel Supplier Nabbed

The Nigerian military said it has arrested a man who specialises in supplying food and fuel to Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. The culprit, the military said, was arrested Sunday morning in Daban Shata, in the suburbs of Baga, Borno State’s third largest community.

The Defence Headquarters spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, in a statement said the supplier, wanted by the military, was eventually nabbed in the early hours of Sunday morning. He said the culprit is currently undergoing interrogation as the military continues its offensive against the insurgents in the north-eastern part of the country.

The arrest and interrogation may lead to answers to questions that have been asked on how the insurgents were able to fuel their convoy of vehicles and motorcycles with which they carried out their attacks in the past years.

The spokesperson also said 260 women and children were rescued in the outskirts of Chalawa village in Adamawa State. These are separate from the 275 women and children rescued by soldiers from Sambisa forest in Borno who were earlier handed over to the emergency agency, NEMA.

Mr. Olukolade said the 260 rescued were held up while trying to escape from the terrorists. He said soldiers took them back to their various communities in Madagali following normal security profiling.

“Some of them disclosed that they had to abandon their homes to escape from the terrorists when Madagali came under their attack, while others were actually abducted and taken there,” Mr. Olukolade said.

The Major General said some terrorists were killed in an encounter with troops who caught up with them as they fled prior to the recovery of the women and children. Some of the terrorists, however, escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. Others who were captured are now being interrogated by intelligence officers.

Mr. Olukolade added that a machine gun, some rounds of ammunition, and some motorcycles and bicycles were also captured from the terrorists. A member of the vigilante group serving as guide to the troops was, however, wounded. He said operations in Sambisa forest are continuing.
