Evangelist & Church Worshippers Kill Man With Stones In Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the murder of a man, Philip Ugwu, 60, by suspected worshipers following a land dispute in Afikpo Local Government Area.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, George Okafor, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki on Monday that the incident occurred at Amebo-Ndebo village.

Mr. Okafor said that the matter was reported to the police on September 30 by the wife of the deceased, Abani Ugwu, adding that one Tochukwu Okoh, an evangelist, had been arrested in connection with the incident.
He said the deceased’s wife alleged that Mr. Okoh and three others attacked her husband with stones.

The officer also quoted the widow as saying that her husband who could not withstand the attack eventually became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.
He said that his body had been deposited in a mortuary and would undergo autopsy.

The spokesperson said the divisional police officer for the area led a team of detectives and anti-crime patrol officers to the scene and arrested the suspect.

“We are currently on the trail of other suspects and I am sure that they will soon be arrested due to the useful information at our disposal,” he said.
“We assure the public that the matter will be investigated thoroughly while the culprits will be duly prosecuted,” he said.

NAN learnt that the victim, popularly called Boxer or Coach, had argued with the worshippers in a new generation church over the Attention of a fence to demarcate their lands.

“We heard Boxer’s wife screaming that her husband had been attacked by some worshippers and before we could get to the scene, he was lying unconscious.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital but his wife identified one of the attackers still with a stone who was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.

“The victim’s wife explained that he had purchased and built on the parcel of land even before the church came to lay claim over it,” a witness who preferred anonymity said.

The witness said that the matter had previously been reported to the traditional council during which the head pastor of the church, still at large, was invited.

Chelsea Target Stones, Hands In Transfer Request At Everton

Having become frustrated by the Merseysiders’ determination to block his move to Stamford Bridge, the 21-year-old has now made his desire to leave official

John Stones has handed in a formal transfer request to Everton as he bids to force through a summer move to Chelsea, Goal understands.

Chelsea have already seen offers of £20 million and £26m rejected for the 21-year-old defender this summer but earlier this month Goal reported that the Premier League champions were confident an improved bid of £30m would be enough to persuade Everton to sell their prized asset.

Stones informed boss Roberto Martinez earlier in the summer that he would like to move to Stamford Bridge and has now made his desire to leave Goodison Park official.

The 21-year-old’s decision comes only a day after West Brom confirmed that they had rejected a similar request from striker Saido Berahino amid persistent interest from Tottenham.

Everton are likely to follow a similar course but despite Martinez’s public insistence that Stones is going nowhere, there is a growing acceptance around Goodison Park that Chelsea will get their man with an offer around the £30m mark.

Jose Mourinho has identified Stones as the perfect long-term replacement for club captain John Terry, whose first-team future is the subject of renewed speculation after his half-time substitution against Manchester City and straight red card for hauling down Salomon Rondon against West Brom on Sunday.

Martinez has expressed his anger on several occasions with Chelsea’s public pursuit of Stones, who has started all three of Everton’s Premier League matches this season despite the uncertainty over his future.

But the pressure on the Merseysiders to accept the departure of one of English football’s brightest young talents will only increase now the player has taken matters into his own hands.

Jose Mourinho Vows To Change Transfer Strategy

21-year old John Stones. Everton boss Roberto Martinez had accused Chelsea of trying to unsettle stones by making their £20 million bid for the young central defender public.

“Our strategy for the Premier League is going to change next year,” Mourinho told reporters in New York on the club’s preseason tour. “Next year we are going to make the first bid on the day after the window closes. On that day, we will do a bid for the season later.

“Because at this moment [it seems] the market is closed. We are all in a strange world. We are all in a strange world. We think it [the transfer market] is open but it is not open it is closed. So the day after it closes, we are going to make a bid for the next season.”

Chelsea’s bid was earlier rejected, with Everton asking for about £30 million, a price Mourinho is not pleased with. “That is the market. And you only pay it if you want,” Mourinho accepted. “If you don’t want to pay it, don’t pay. It’s as simple as that.

“The market has no rules or limits from season to season. And not even the introduction of financial fair play rules is able to control the market. The market is where it is and it’s up to the clubs to decide yes or no. For ourselves there are certain rules.

“It’s a good market. That is why smaller other clubs if they have interesting young English players they use that in the right way for them. I don’t even criticise them. They play the market for themselves.

“And if the big clubs don’t want to go over certain limits, they have to make a decision. And that is maybe why none of the top clubs are not full of young English players. But that is the market.”
