Barcelona Reveal New €220m Shirt Sponsor Deal

Barcelona will have a new name on the front of their jerseys from the start of the 2017-18 season with Rakuten becoming their new sponsor as part of an initial four-year deal worth an estimated €220 million.

Founded in 1997, Rakuten are the largest eCommerce company in Japan, and started expanding outside their home country in 2005 and are eager to further expand their worldwide reach through one of La Liga’s biggest names.

“As FC Barcelona’s Main Global Partner, Rakuten is set to power our global brand strategy and, as FCB’s first-ever Global Innovation and Entertainment Partner, we are looking to bring the collective power of our brands like Viber, Wuaki, Ebates, Kobo, and PriceMinister to build an innovation framework that will deliver innovative solutions and services to fans, members and players,” said Hiroshi Mikitani, Chairman and CEO of Rakuten, Inc.

Rakuten will replace Qatar Airways as the main sponsor of Barcelona, having taken on the role in 2013. Qatar Airways extended their deal at the end of the 2015-16 season for an additional year.

Reps Seek Life Imprisonment For Terrorists, Sponsors

The House of Representatives moved on Tuesday to prescribe tougher penalties for terrorism, including “a maximum of life imprisonment.”
A person, who facilitates the escape of a suspect held for an act of terrorism also faces a life prison sentence.
Sponsors of terrorism face the penalty of life imprisonment as those who commit the act itself.
Under the new law in view, planning a terror act is punishable even when the act is not committed eventually.
The provisions were contained in two consolidated bills, which passed second reading at the House in Abuja.
They bills were a  “A Bill for an Act to Make Provisions for Offences Relating to Terrorism, Prohibit the Financing of Terrorism and Consolidate all Acts Relating to Terrorism and for Related Matters” and “A Bill for an Act to Amen the Terrorism Act 2011 for the Purpose of Applying Stringent Prison Terms for Offences of Terrorism, an Remove the Ambiguities in the Act and for Related Matters.”
The bills were sponsored by Mr. Mohammed Monguno and Mr. Ahmed Kaita.
While the first bill sought to repeal the existing terrorism (prohibition) law and make entirely new provisions for offences, the second bill sought to amend the extant law by strengthening it.
Section 19 of Monguno’s bill states, “A person who knowingly, directly or indirectly (a) aids and abets, (b) induces, instigates, instructs, (c) counsels or procures another person by means to commit an act of terrorism, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to life imprisonment. “
It adds, “Where the offence of terrorism is not committed, to an imprisonment for a term of 20 years.”
The bill defines terrorism broadly to mean any “deliberate” act of “malice”, which may cause harm/damage to a country, its government, economy, national assets, international organisations or result in loss of lives.
Kidnapping and the use of biological or chemical weapons, among others, are classified as terrorism under the bill.
It also includes “interference with or disruption of the supply of water, power or any other fundamental natural resource, the effect of which is to endanger human life.”

Borno Elders Reveal Sponsors Of Boko Haram

Borno elders have accused beneficiaries of the controversial ‘arms deal’ of sponsoring Boko Haram insurgents, and have called on the Federal Government to ensure they are brought to book.

The declaration was contained in a statement by the Chairman of Borno Elders Forum, Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, yesterday titled: ‘Beneficiaries of ‘arms deal’ are sponsors of Boko Haram’ at the end of the elders’ meeting where the forum resolved to throw its support behind the federal government on the fight against Boko Haram insurgence and corruption.

“The people who deliberately turned away from their official responsibilities on security issues, or those who looted the funds meant for the prosecution of the war against Boko Haram and those who spoke or continue to speak in their favour are all one and the same. “They all individually and collectively aided and sponsored the Boko Haram insurgency.

“They colluded to ensure the death of our brave soldiers, our innocent people and the near total destruction of our society. Nigerians should stand by us and collectively assist to bring those responsible to book. It does not speak well of any Nigerian, for whatever reason, to fight or criticise the President of Nigeria or call our anti–corruption agencies names when they simply want to make offenders pay for the crimes most of them have confessed to have committed.

“Those who collected such huge sums of money from the national treasury and converted same for their unending greed and avarice, should be regarded as part and parcel of the sponsors of Boko Haram. Get them and you will get the rest. “We feel hurt and betrayed that some Nigerians are politicising this despicable issue of ‘arms deal.”

The forum lamented the wanton destruction of lives and property by Boko Haram and urged the federal government to take proper statistics of all those who perished and property destroyed with a view to ensuring adequate compensation .

We Will Expose Boko Haram Sponsors- Army

The Nigerian Army on Sunday said very soon those who are either participating, hiding, fuelling or conniving with members of Boko Haram sect to launch the deadly attacks in parts of the country will be exposed.

This was disclosed by the Theatre Commander, Operation “Lafiya Dole,” Major General Yushau Abubakar, adding that “investigation on those that we suspect that are either participating or hiding, fuelling or conniving with those that carried out those acts, is ongoing. They will be exposed in due course.”

Major General Yushau Abubakar, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, said the military had already gotten clues about those involved in the recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri.

“We searched the houses and certain items that we recovered at the vicinity gave us some clues.”

ACF Wants Sponsors Of Boko Haram Exposed

Insisting that the powerful sponsors of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria should not be spared, Arewa leaders yesterday asked the military authorities to expose the prominent northerners and politicians who have links with the terror group in the north east and treat them as criminals.

In a related development, the Nigerian military has vowed to sustain the offensive against the Boko Haram terrorists until they are completely incapacitated and “totally impaired.”

The Acting Director Defence Information (DDI) Col. Rabe Abubakar said yesterday in Abuja that the guerrilla tactics adopted by the insurgents require an all out sustained offensive to completely bring the menace to an end.

He said: “The coordinated operation and capabilities of the terrorist group would intensify because the guerrillas should not be given any breathing space to regroup and re-strategize their campaign.”

UN Sponsors 500 Boko Haram Victims To Acquire Vocational Skills

The UN said on Monday in Abuja that it has sponsored 500 victims of Boko Haram violence from three North East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe to acquire vocational skills.

Mr Matthew Alao, UN Conflict Prevention and Peace Building Analyst, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the programme was under the UNDP Livelihood Support Scheme for the zone.

Alao explained that an orientation programme for the 500 selected beneficiaries would commence today, Aug. 17 at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre in Jos, Plateau.

According to him, the skills acquisition programme is the first phase of intervention by the UN to emeliorate the sufferings of the displaced persons.

Alao said that the skills training would cover hair dressing, tailoring, knitting, catering and decorations as well as GSM repair, shoe-making, leather works and computer studies.

According to him, the participants will also undertake specialised training on conflict resolution and peace building.

“A total of 500 beneficiaries who are victims of Boko Haram from three North East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe will be placed in a two-week compulsory orientation programme.

“They are going to undergo physical exercise, training, capacity building on mediation, conflict prevention, conflict transformation, social integration, peaceful coexistence for two weeks.

“We received over 2,000 applications and engaged in rigorous screening exercise out of which we selected the 500 that genuinely need this assistance.

“We took the successful 500 candidates for 2-weeks intensive course on mental and physical training.

“We are also going to train them on mediation and conflict transformation as well as business management; after that, we will put then on six-month to one-year training,’’ he said.
