UNILAG To Screen Candidates Despite List Withdrawal By JAMB

The University of Lagos on Monday says it will go ahead with its screening of prospective candidates for admission into the 2016/2017 academic session as scheduled.

The institution’s Deputy Registrar, (Information), Mr. Toyin Adebule, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

Adebule gave the university’s position against the backdrop of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board withdrawing the list of recommended candidates for admission, earlier sent to the various universities.

JAMB, in the statement signed by its Head of Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, stated that the withdrawal was to ensure that the senate of each of the universities performed its statutory functions.

NAN reports that UNILAG had, last month, announced that it would begin screening candidates, who chose the institution as their first choice with a cut-off point of 200 and above, between Wednesday Aug. 3, 2016 and Aug. 24, 2016.

“We want to inform the public that our screening, for candidates that will be admitted for the 2016/17 academic session, will still hold as scheduled from Aug. 3, 2016 to Aug. 24, 2016. It is true that JAMB had sent a list to us, which it had considered as those who met our cut-off point. It is this same list that it withdrew to allow the universities to carry out their admission process as required by the law setting up their senates.

“There are statutory functions meant for all university senates, among which admissions is part one. It is only after selecting the candidates for admission that the senate refers the list to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states. And so, it is only proper for JAMB to have taken this step, realising that it had taken over the job of the universities’ senates,’’ he said.

Adebule, however, added that the withdrawal of the list did not interfere with UNILAG’s proposed plan to screen its candidates. He added that candidates would be screened based on the authenticity of their results and their course combinations.

Senate To Screen Ambassadorial Nominees

The Senate declared on Wednesday that it would proceed with the screening and confirmation of the 47 ambassadorial nominees referred to it by President Muhammadu Buhari last month.

The resolution to proceed with the screening of the ambassadorial nomination followed the adoption of the report of the foreign affairs committee which investigated the allegation of lopsidedness ?in the nominations.

The Senate had last month ?asked its Committee on Foreign Affairs to investigate allegations of irregularities and breach of the Federal character clause in the constitution by the President in making the nomination.? But the senate in adopting the report of the committee ?yesterday asked the President to hasten to submit to it the list of non-career ambassadors to balance the nomination

Other recommendations of the committee adopted are:?

?”that the President should be advised to expedite action on the submission of non-career nominees, which is expected to balance the perceived lopsidedness in the appointments. Moreso, in future nominations, the executive arm should be guided to see the logic of sustaining the previous practice of presenting to the Senate a combined list of both career and non-career nominees for confirmation;?

“that the Executive arm should be equally advised to promptly commence the process of the selection of all nominees and other principal officers of government for an appointment, ahead of confirmation by Senate to avoid delays in governmental operations.

“the government is advised to sustain the recommendable compliance to gender representation and balance in the remaining nomination and any other one in the future with a view to giving the female gender the desired sense of belonging.”?

Presenting the report before the Senate, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Shehu Sani, informed the Senate that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the committee that the President breached no rules in the nomination adding that nobody from the four states of Bayelsa, Ondo, Plateau and Ebonyi where petitions had come from met the criteria for selection.
?
“?The nominees were carefully selected on the basis of federal character, seniority, gender consideration, minimum of 30 months of service before retirement and competence”?

“The submission from the SGF admitted that officers of Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ondo and Plateau were not featured on the list because they did not meet the criteria for appointment.” The report declared.

Rats To Screen Inmates For Tuberculosis

Scientists in East Africa are planning to exploit trained rats’ highly developed sense of smell to carry out mass screening for tuberculosis among inmates of crowded prisons in Tanzania and Mozambique.

Health officials noted on Friday in Dar Es Salaam that this has became imperative because in Tanzania, people in communities where tuberculosis is most common, including prisons, often fail to show up for screening due to paucity of funds or awareness.

“Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death, after HIV, from an infectious disease around the world.

“The WHO data shows that there are about 9 million new cases a year and around 2 million deaths,” they said.

They said this is creating a huge burden for health authorities trying to tackle the disease.

The health official said because existing systems lack the accuracy, speed and cost-efficiency required scaling up screening of the highly contagious disease, many TB cases go undiagnosed.

They disclosed that to achieve this, African Giant Pouched Rats trained by the Belgian non-governmental organisation “APOPO”, widely known for their work sniffing out landmines, are now developing a reputation in East Africa for their skill and speed at detecting TB too.

Charlie Richter, APOPO’s U.S. Director, said with funding from the United States Agency for International Development, plans were underway to recruit and train more rats to carry out prison screening.

He said the system is faster and more reliable than existing methods.

“We believe our unique TB Detection Rat technology will prove itself as an effective mass-screening tool.

“We then aim to expand the programme to all prisons, shantytowns, factories and other settings in Tanzania, Mozambique and other high TB-burden countries, as well as in high-risk groups such as those individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

“This will improve and save lives all over the globe at a low cost,” he said.
