Niger To Hand Over Scores Of Boko Haram Militants To ICC- President Issoufou

The Niger Government has arrested scores of Boko Haram militants and will hand them over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for trial, President Mahamadou Issoufou, has said.

This is contained in a document from the World Humanitarian Summit, ongoing in Istanbul, Turkey, made available to reporters in New York.

The document said Mr. Issoufou made this known on Tuesday during a high-level leaders’ round table titled “Uphold the Norms that Safeguard Humanity”.

He said the Nigerien government would ensure the militants are tried by the ICC.

“This is something that all countries should do,” he said.

The best way to protect civilians, he added, was to ratify humanitarian conventions.

“Political, military and administrative authorities must be aware of pledges made by Governments and of the sanctions provided for under those conventions,” he said.

Mr. Issoufou added that all countries must take on commitments to respect international humanitarian law and human rights instruments, as well as guarantee that populations in need received humanitarian aid.

Buhari Scores Low On Economy, Others, See Poll Rating

President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval rating has slipped further from 32.8% in February to 31.2% in March, amid worsening economic crisis and crippling fuel scarcity, according to a new poll.

The monthly poll by Governance Advancement Initiative for Nigeria, GAIN, says more Nigerians again scored Mr. Buhari low on his administration’s handling of the economy, power and fuel shortage.

It is the second time the president’s rating dropped since GAIN in December started monthly tracking of performance of governments at all levels in Nigeria.

In earlier months, the poll found that majority of respondents did not blame President Buhari for Nigeria’s economic troubles. They blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan instead.

In January, the president’s approval rating stood at 63.4%.

The trend however shifted significantly in February as the nation’s economic crisis bit harder.

In March, which is the latest result, the poll said more Nigerians continued to blame Mr. Buhari— not Mr. Jonathan— for the nation’s economic woes.

The falling rating was primarily due to petroleum scarcity, bad economy, power outage, and broken campaign promises, said the poll.

“A crippling fuel scarcity continued to affect individuals and business across the country, and had a concomitant effect on transportation and business costs,” said Malcolm Fabiyi, one of the poll’s coordinators, who previously served as a visiting professor at the Lagos Business School.

The president scored low on economy, power, and rule of law.

Scores Killed As Terrorists Attack Villages In Taraba (Viewer Discretion)

Terrorists in the guise of  herdsmen yesterday attacked Angai and Ndole villages in Gashak Local Council area of Taraba State, killing several persons.

Following the incident, a large number of the local population has reportedly fled to the neighbouring Cameroun Republic and nearby local council areas.

Though the exact number of casualties are yet to be confirmed by the authority, sources said that no fewer than 44 persons, have been feared killed with several numbers of houses and domestic animals burnt to aches.

Confirming the disaster, the Police Public Relations Officer, Joseph Kwaji, agreed that there was an attack by the herdsmen, but could not ascertain the numbers of persons killed.

According to him “It is true that there was an attack by the herdsmen, but for now, I don’t have the full details of the crisis, so I can not tell you the number of casualties now.”

Scores Of Boko Haram Terrorists Surrender To Troops

Scores of Boko Haram terrorists have continued to surrender to the Nigerian troops even as more have indicated willingness to lay down their arms.

Report gathered say that many of the terrorists were moving out of their Sambisa haven which has received continuous pounding from the air as a result of airforce reconnaissance flight that exposed their hideouts.

A statement by the Acting Director of Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman noted that the action of the terrorists, meant to escape collateral damage, was due to the new offensive strategies put in place for ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’ by the military high command.

According to the statement, “the new strategies being employed by the military have started yielding positive results with scores of terrorists surrendering to troops and many more willing to surrender.

“The strategies employed included sustained offensive operations, pre-emptive air strikes by the Nigerian Airforce and routes blocked by ground troops, all geared towards constricting and snuffing out the Boko Haram terrorists.

Many Terrorists Killed As Troops Lay Ambush In Sambisa

Following the sustained air and ground offensive against remnants of Boko Haram terrorists still holed up in bunkers and other hideouts inside Sambisa Forest by airforce fighter aircraft, Nigerian troop’s yesterday succeeded in downing scores of the terrorists who attempted to flee the forest into neighbouring communities.

In this regard, Troops of 26 Task Force Brigade in Gwoza, Borno State, on Tuesday evening engaged Boko Haram terrorists fleeing Sambisa forest as unrelenting aerial bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force continued.

According to a statement signed by Acting Director, Army Public relations, Col. Sani Usman, “The fleeing terrorists in 7 Pick-up vans and some motorcycles mounted with assorted weapons such as Rocket Propelled Grenades and Anti-Aircraft Guns were decisively dealt with, killing quite a number of them”.

“The troops also destroyed their vehicles, weapons and motorcycles. They also recovered a vehicle, 1 motorcycle and 2 AK47 riffles and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO and 12.7mm ammunitions”.

“Troops have intensified their patrols and offensive actions against the terrorists in the area” he added.

UNILAG’s Best Student Scores 4.96 CGPA

The  Vice-Chancellor of the  University of  Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, on Friday said that  125 of  its  10,600 graduating students for the 2014 session had finished in the First Class Division.

Bello said at the convocation media briefing in Lagos that the event for the award of degrees, higher degrees, Diploma, certificates and prizes, would hold from April 27 to April 30.

He said that 1,664 of the students bagged the Second Class Upper Division while  2,827 were  in the Second Class Lower Division.

Bello said that 963 others would be graduating in the Third Class Division; 90 with Pass degrees while 167 others would be under the unclassified degrees in Medicine and Pharmacy.

“I am also proud to announce Mr Korede Akinpelu of the Department of Chemical Engineering as the best graduating student of the university with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96.

“Mr Sedan Shittu of the Department of Finance  is the second best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.91,” he said.

Bello said the institution would also be graduating 103 Doctors of Philosophy (Ph.Ds.), 4,330 with Masters’ degrees  and 331 with Postgraduate Diplomas from its School of Postgraduate Studies.

He said that Dr Isaac Akpan, with the thesis entitled: “ Processing and Characterisation of Selected Biodegradable Fibre-PLA Composites,’’  emerged the best Doctorate student.
