Military Begins Road Construction Into Sambisa Forest

The Nigerian military on Wednesday said it had commenced the construction of roads into the Sambisa and Alagarno havens of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The military also revealed that over 80 per cent of the Sambisa Forest had been captured from the insurgents as it insisted that the counter-insurgency war in the North-East would soon be over.

The military equally disclosed at a press conference by the head of counter-insurgency operation in the North-East (Operation Lafiya Dole), Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, that 1,880 civilians mostly women were rescued from the insurgents in the last one week.

Irabor also revealed that in the last one week, 504 suspected Boko Haram insurgents were arrested while 19 insurgents surrendered voluntarily.

He noted that 37 foreigners were arrested by the military and they were undergoing interrogations to ascertaining their relationship with the terrorists.

Irabor during the press conference in Maiduguri, televised live to the nation, said, “We have embarked on roads construction within the Sambisa Forest to open up the area and also to ease our operations within the theatre.

“I call on individuals and corporate organisations to come in and support the military, as everything cannot be left to government alone. They can support us with construction materials and other materials, as roads are essential in reviving the economic development of the North-East,” he said.

Irabor warned members of the public, especially female students of tertiary institutions to be wary of new recruitment website, insisting that “Boko Haram insurgency is an evil that is meant to destroy the society.”

“I also urge the general public to continue to support the military in our final move to wipe out insurgency in the North-East through the provision of useful information and not to follow the ways of some media outfits that are bent on bringing down the military,” he appealed.

Nigeria To Begin Production Of Cement For Road Construction – Onu

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology says research is ongoing to produce cement for road construction in the country.

Onu disclosed at the Forum of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, production of indigenous cement for road becomes necessary due to the way some asphalt built roads get damaged, causing hardship to road users.

“We’ve asked Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NIBRRI), to commence research in concrete because we have seen that using asphalt on our roads has not been much enduring.

“It is something that many of the advanced countries are already using but the reason for our research is that we want to study how we can make it have the Nigerian character”, Onu said.

He said the nation had all it takes to be the technological hub of the continent, adding that consumption of home grown products would promote innovation needed for standard creativity.

“When we properly harness science, technology, engineering, research and innovation, we will be the technological hub because there is tremendous potential in Nigeria.

“We want a situation where Nigerian scientists and engineers are creative and innovative. We want them to also be successful and prosperous.

“You have Nigerian scientists and engineers in virtually, all the major research institutes in the world, these are the people we can also attract home”, he said.

The Minister said that the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC), which has President Muhammadu Buhari as the Chairman,15 ministers and other key stakeholders would make significant impact in promoting innovations in the country.

NAN reports that National Chamber of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, among others, are represented in NRIC.

He added that the current administration would make deliberate efforts in attracting young and old to science and technology innovations.

NAN recalls that National Research and Innovation Fund has also been established so that research, science and technology could be funded outside the annual budget.

NDDC To Complete N24bn Ogbia-Nembe Road, 6 Bridges In Bayelsa

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Tuesday said that its 27-kilometre Ogbia-Nembe road and six bridges project in Bayelsa would soon be completed.

A statement issued in Port Harcourt by Mr Chijioke Amu-Nnadi, the commission’s Head of Corporate Affairs unit, disclosed that the project was awarded at a cost of N24.5 billion.

It quoted Mrs Ibim Semenitari, Acting Managing Director of NDDC, as saying that President Muhammadu Buhari directed the commission to fast track completion of ongoing projects in the Niger Delta.

It said the project, which had more than 50 culverts spreading across “very difficult terrains”, would terminate in Brass Local Government area of the state.

“NDDC is committed to speedy completion of the 27-kilometre Ogbia-Nembe road, six bridges and 50 culverts project in partnership with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

“The project which is in its first phase of completion will eventually terminate in Brass area of Bayelsa State.

“The project, which is nearing completion, was made possible by President Muhammadu Buhari’s release of N22 billion for the commission between June and December,” Semenitari was quoted as saying.

The statement said that the commission would soon commence construction of a prototype-ultra modern student hostel at the Niger Delta University on Wilberforce Island in Bayelsa.

It called on individuals and corporate organisations to partner the commission to realise its development mandate, adding that governance was a collective responsibility of all.

Gov Ugwuanyi Flags Off Road Construction In Nsukka

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Friday flagged off construction and rehabilitation of major roads in the Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.

The project includes dualisation of the Opi-Nsukka Road, reconstruction of Obeachara-Mechanic Village Road and reconstruction of Ogurugu-Total Roundabout-University Road and Nsukka-Orba Road.

Flagging off the work, Ugwuanyi said the projects were in fulfillment of his campaign promises.

The governor urged people of the area to cooperate with contractors handling the projects.

“This is in fulfillment of my campaign promises. More would follow as the administration progresses. We must equip and modernise Nsukka to compete with other university towns in the country. It is my expectation that the contractors will deliver quality work and complete the projects at the agreed time,’’ he said.

The Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Mr Edward Ubosi, told Nsukka people to be ready to make sacrifices.

Ubosi made it clear that no compensation would be paid for those whose houses or land would be affected as a result of the dualisation of the roads.

“If you want Nsukka to be developed, residents should be ready to make sacrifices because no development comes without sacrifice,’’ he said.

The Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial Zone, Sen. Chukwuka Utazi, thanked Ugwuanyi for fulfilling his promises to the people.

Utazi assured the governor that National Assembly members from the zone would work with him to reposition the state.

The Chairman of Nsukka Local Government, Mr Charles Ugwu, thanked the governor for remembering Nsukka people as he promised during his electioneering campaign.

Ugwu promised to provide the enabling environment for contractors to do their jobs.
