Rivers Assembly Suspends 3 LGC Chairmen, Summons 9 Commissioners

The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned 9 commissioners and four heads of government parastatals for questioning tomorrow, May 12, 2015 over the state of the economy of Rivers, just as it suspended 3 LG Caretaker committee Chairmen in the state.

Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Leyii Kwane who presided over the Assembly ordered for their summon. The deputy leader of the Assembly, Nname Ehwor raised the motion on the state of the Economy of Rivers State before the House and supported by the Assembly members.

The motion listed the 9 commissioners as those of Finance, Agriculture, Power, Health, Tourism , Information and commissioner for budget. Others include Commissioners for Works , Transport, Accountant General of Rivers State, Chairman, Board of Internal Revenue , Chairman Rivers State Assembly Service Commission and the Chairman Secondary Schools Management Board.

In another development, the Rivers State House of Assembly also suspended three local Government Caretaker Committee chairmen including those of Khana local Government, Asari Toru local government and Ahoada East local Government for alleged insecurity and financial recklessness.

The state Assembly, in line with the motion on Insecurity and Financial Mismanagement by the Chairmen of Asari-Toru, Ahoada-East and Khana Local Governments presented by the Deputy leader of the House, Nname Ehwor suspended the three LG CTC chairmen and ordered them to hand over to the Head of Local Government of their councils.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly who spoke with newsmen after the sitting said the Assembly’s action was part of their oversight function, hence everyone in the state is feeling the pains of the economy of the state. He said it is not meant to witch-hunt anyone in the state.

Ex-Militants Among Newly Elected Lawmakers In Rivers Assembly- Report

Some of the dreaded Niger Delta militants, who accepted the Federal Government’s Amnesty, have been elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The late President Musa Yar’Adua had in 2009 signed a Proclamation granting Amnesty to Niger Delta militants, who agreed to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

The deal offered an unconditional pardon and cash payments to fighters who surrendered their arms and assembled at screening centers located in many parts of the oil-rich region within 60 days. It targeted up to 10,000 militants whose attacks in the six Niger Delta states cost the country a third of its oil production and revenue.

The amnesty which came to effect on Thursday, August 6, 2009, saw militant commanders, including Government Ekpemukpolo, alias Tompolo, Sogboma George, Ateke Tom, Farah Dagogo, Ebikabowei Ben, alias Boyloaf, Kile Selky Torughedie, alias the Young Shall Grow; surrendering their arms and returning to normal life outside the creeks.

But based on the result of last Saturday’s election released by the state Returning Officer, Faraday Orumwense, a professor of Material Engineering, the ex-militants are among the 25 candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, who won the poll.
