Italy Rescues 6,500 Migrants From Mediterranean

The Italian coast guard has saved 6,500 migrants most believed to be Africans, off the Libyan coast in 40 separate rescue missions.

It said on Tuesday in Rome that during the Monday rescue, the migrant’s one of the largest influxes of refugees in a single day so far this year, were packed on board scores of boats.

It disclosed that many of the boats were flimsy rubber dinghies that become dangerously unstable in high seas.

The guard noted that the migrants were packed on board scores of boats, many of them flimsy rubber dinghies that become dangerously unstable in high seas.

It said that available data from the International Organisation for Migration said that more than 105,000 migrants had reached Italy by boat so far in 2016, many of them setting sail from Libya.

“An estimated 2,726 men, women and children have died over the same period trying to make the journey.

The coast guard said that not less than 1,100 migrants were rescued from boats in the Strait of Sicily on Sunday as they tried to reach Europe.

“More refugees were expected to set sail this week because of favourable weather conditions.

Italy has been on the front line of Europe’s migrant crisis for three years, and more than 400,000 have successfully made the voyage to Italy from North Africa since the beginning of 2014, fleeing violence and poverty.

Nigerian Navy Rescues British-flagged Vessel From Pirates

The Nigerian Navy yesterday said its Ship Nwamba has rescued a British-flagged cargo ship with call sign MT Vectis Osprey from sea pirates who attacked her 20 nautical miles offshore of Bonny.

A statement from Navy spokesman, Commodore Chris Ezekobe said the rescue operation was in response to a timely alert by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) to the Naval Regional Maritime Awareness Centre (RMAC).

He said: “the war ship was promptly deployed to track down and rescue the vessel. The British flagged MT Vectis Osprey departed Bonny offshore terminal and came under pirate attack on Wednesday 17   August 2016. “

He added that NNS Nwamba engaged the attackers on approaching the vessel which made them to abandon their mission due to superior fire power.

He also said, Naval special forces onboard the war ship embarked and rescued the crew who locked up themselves in a citadel in the merchant tanker.

Ezekobe said the crew and cargo of MT Vectis Osprey are safe while investigation has also commenced in order to unravel the circumstances of the attempted hijack, especially with regard to the current trend of involvement of crew members in attacks on their own vessels.

He also said the Ship owners are hereby advised to profile their crew before embarking them onboard to avoid situations in which some disgruntled crew members stage-manage attacks on their own vessels.

Nigerian Army Rescues 71 From Boko Haram

Nigerian soldiers rescued 71 people, almost all girls and women, in firefights that killed many Boko Haram militants in villages near the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the military said Thursday.

Some captives told The Associated Press they were in the clutches of the Islamic extremists for as long as a year.

“I was waiting for death … they often threatened to kill us,” said Yagana Kyari, a woman in her 20s who said she had been kidnapped from her village of Kawuri and taken to a militant camp in Walimberi, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, the biggest city in the northeast and the birthplace of Boko Haram.

Kyari said they often went hungry because the extremists never provided enough food.

“Our gallants troops have rescued a total number of 59 civilians in two camps of the terrorist group,” army spokesman Col. I.T. Gusau said. “Many of the terrorists were killed in the course of the operations, but mop up is still going on.”

The 59, all women and children except for five elderly men, were freed on Thursday, he said. Another 12 women and girls were rescued Wednesday from Kilakisa, 90 kilometers (55 miles) southwest of Maiduguri, he said.

Chad’s Army Rescues 43 Boko Haram Child Soldiers In Nigeria

Col. Azem Agouna, Chadian Army Spokesman, said on Wednesday that they have repatriated 43 children, who had been kidnapped by Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram and forced to become child soldiers.

He said in N’djamena that the children, who are aged 12 and older and are Chadian nationals, were found in the Nigerian town of Damasak, in North-Eastern Borno. Damasak was under Boko Haram control until Chadian and Nigerian forces recaptured the town in early March.

Agouna said the children managed to escape during the clashes between the insurgents and soldiers, while the local families helped them to hide from the jihadists.

He disclosed that when it was certain that Boko Haram had been defeated and would not return to the town, the children came out of their hiding places and asked Chadian security forces for help. The spokesman said the army would look into how and when Boko Haram abducted the children from Chad.
