Shettima To Rebuild Churches Destroyed By Boko Haram Before Christmas

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno has promised to rebuild churches and other structures destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents in Lassa as he visited liberated communities in the southern senatorial zone of the state

“We will rebuild churches, private and public buildings destroyed by the insurgents,” Mr. Shettima said when he accessed the level of damage in Lassa in Askira-Uba Local Government Area on Wednesday.

He expressed shock at the magnitude of destruction, saying that the government would commence the rehabilitation in a short while.

“We are going to rebuild churches and others structures destroyed in Lassa and other communities around.

“We are saddened by the large scale destruction in Lassa which is a predominantly Christian community,” Mr. Shettima said.

He added: “We are doing this because we have a duty as a government to ensure fairness, equity and justice in all our endeavors,” he said.

“We believe that the Christian community has rights to be served like its Muslims counterpart, since we have rebuilt Mosques destroyed in other places, we must rebuild churches too.”

Mr. Shettima said the churches would be rebuilt before Christmas ahead of this year’s Yuletide.

Foreign Assistance Needed To Rebuild North-East- Saraki

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, yesterday solicited the assistance of the international community for the on-going efforts by the Federal Government to end insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country and, thereafter, rebuild the region and rehabilitate its people.

Saraki made the call at separate sessions he had with the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Zenner and his Spanish counterpart, Alfonso Barnudo Sabastian De Erice, who paid courtesy visits to him in Abuja.

In a press statement issued by his media office, Saraki pointed out that alleviating the humanitarian situation and level of destruction in the region would require urgent and global support across the world.

“As you talked about insecurity, particularly the insurgency in the North-east, it is a problem that we alone cannot tackle. A couple of days ago, some of us were there in the region, in Borno State, to see the effects on the entire community, particularly the internally displaced persons. I think that it is clear that a large part of the North-east is in need of reconstruction and rehabilitation from long-term funding,” Saraki said.

How American Muslims Are Helping Black Churches Rebuild

Muslims are bringing hope to Christian communities in the South after a recent spate of fires devastated black church buildings.

Three Muslim organizations have teamed up to raise money to rebuild worship centers in Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina that were destroyed by fire the past few weeks.

The “Respond With Love” campaign, organized by the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, the Arab-American Association of New York and Ummah Wide during the holy month of Ramadan, has already raised close to $25,000 with the help of more than 500 individual supporters.

“ALL houses of worship are sanctuaries, a place where all should feel safe, a place we can seek refuge when the world is too much to bear,” the campaign organizers wrote on theirfundraising page. “We want for others what we want for ourselves: the right to worship without intimidation, the right to safety, and the right to property.”

Church fires aren’t unusual. It’sestimated that arsonists regularly set fire to about five churches every week. The recent blazes at the eight churches noted by “Respond With Love” don’t seem to be related. Federal investigators also have not indicated that these fires were the result of hate crimes.
