South Africa To Quit International Criminal Court

South Africa is pulling out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) because its obligations are inconsistent with laws giving sitting leaders diplomatic immunity, according to government officials.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha said on Friday that the government will soon submit a bill in parliament to withdraw from the court in The Hague, a move that comes as several African countries express concerns over what they call the ICC’s disproportionate targeting of the continent.

The bill will propose that South Africa repeal the Rome Statute that created the court because the statute is “in conflict and inconsistent with” the country’s diplomatic immunity law, said Masutha.

“A difficult choice had to be made,” Masutha told reporters in the capital Pretoria.

Last year, South Africa said it planned to leave the ICC after it faced criticism for not arresting Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, who is accused of genocides and war crimes, when he visited the country. Bashir has denied the accusations.

“Officials here say the ICC unfairly targets African governments and leaders,” Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa, reporting from Johannesburg, said.

Mutasa said that government began the process of withdrawing from the ICC last year after civil society groups dragged the government to court over its decision to let Bashir go.

A document seen by Reuters at the United Nations on Thursday showed that the move would take effect one year after notice is formally received by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The document was dated October 19, and signed by Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, South Africa’s minister of international relations and cooperation.

“The Republic of South Africa has found that its obligations with respect to the peaceful resolution of conflicts at times are incompatible with the interpretation given by the International Criminal Court,” the document said.

News Reporter Who Quit On Air To Sell Weed Faces 24 Years Behind Bars

Remember the Alaska news anchor who was doing a segment on the Alaska Cannabis Club and then shocked everyone when she revealed she was the owner and quit live on television? Well it looks like she should have kept her daytime job because her Cannabis Club got her in some big legal trouble and could spend the next 24 years of her life behind bars.

According to Complex , Greene has been hit with 8 charges of “misconduct with a controlled substance.” What’s interesting about this is that Alaska legalized marijuana in November 2014, two months after Green’s epic resignation.

Where Greene messed up is that the legalization didn’t go into effect until February 2015. In that time copes raided her club twice and ended buying six things , which lead to her extreme charges.

Argentina Begs Messi Not To Quit

Argentine football legend Diego Maradona and the country’s President Mauricio Macri urged Lionel Messi on Monday not to leave the national team despite his vow to quit after a humiliating defeat.

The Barcelona superstar left the field in tears after missing a spot-kick in the Copa America Centenario final shootout against Chile on Sunday.

He promptly told reporters he was quitting, throwing Argentine football into turmoil ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“He has to stay because he still has playing days ahead of him,” Maradona was quoted as saying by La Nacion newspaper online.

“He will go to Russia in form to be world champion.”

Messi, 29, is widely rated as the best player in the world, but Sunday’s loss was his fourth defeat in an international final for Argentina.

After an outpouring of disappointment by fans online, Macri joined the calls for the Barcelona superstar to stay with Argentina.

“He called him and told him how proud he feels of the national team’s performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism,” a spokesman for Macri told AFP by telephone.

I Will Not Quit As Senate President- Saraki

Persons expecting the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, to resign on account of his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja over alleged false declaration of assets will have to wait till eternity.

This is because the Senate President on Tuesday said resigning would amount to allowing external forces to have their way.

This is even as 84 Senators on Tuesday passed a vote of confidence Saraki notwithstanding his ordeals with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Saraki also disclosed that the Senate was yet to receive the list of ministerial nominees from President Muhammadu Buhari, contrary to speculations.

The Senate President, who was addressing his colleagues at the resumption of plenary after six weeks recess, said he would not be a party to subversion of separation of powers as enshrined in nation’s constitution.

He said: “Distinguished Senators, I believe you have all followed with keen interest, my trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. I shall avoid discussing the details of that case here for obvious reasons.

“Meanwhile, I wish to reiterate my remarks before the Tribunal, that I have no iota of doubt that I am on trial today because I am the president of the Nigerian Senate, against the wishes of some powerful individuals outside this Chambers…”

Stay In Your Party Or Quit Politics, APC To PDP Defectors

The All Progressives  Congress, APC yesterday shut its door to defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, charging would be defectors to either form a constructive opposition or quit politics.

The charge from the APC came as the PDP following a meeting of the national chairman with zonal and state chairmen of the party accused the APC of using carrot and stick to dismember their party with the intention of enthroning a one party dictatorship in the country.

The PDP chieftains in their post-mortem of the recent elections also urged aggrieved candidates of the party who lost out to seek judicial redress with the affirmation that the party would support them all the way.

The APC reacting to a communiqué of the meeting between the National Working Committee, NWC of the PDP and its elected governors and senators on Tuesday affirmed that the party was scared stiff of playing opposition.

Noting the continued interest of the leaders of the PDP to jump ship, the APC in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party was not enthusiastic about receiving the PDP defectors.

‘’The truth of the matter is that the leadership of the PDP is not even waiting to be approached before fleeing to the APC. PDP leaders and members are falling over themselves shamelessly and swearing undying allegiance to the APC. Well, in case they did not get the message of the President-elect and our National Chairman, we want to repeat it in very blunt terms: PDP leaders and members, you are not welcome in APC. Please stay in your party, but if – as we suspect – you cannot survive in opposition, then take a walk, quit politics,’’ the party said.

LEAKED: If PDP Wants Me Out, I Am Ready To Throw The Cap Away- Mu’azu

Information available to 247ureports.com obtained from a competent source near the PDP national chairman indicates that the national chairman had announced his resignation to the leadership of the Jonathan presidential campaign team following a heated ‘argument’ over the new campaign strategy adopted by the PDP presidential campaign team – and his unwillingness to play along.

Available information reveals that Muazu was asked to resign from the seat of PDP national chairman because he refused to join “the train of those insulting Buhari”. And, according to our source who spoke to Muazu yesterday, the embattled PDP chairman was willing to walk away from the seat if the PDP insist of having him resign over his unwillingness to be critical of Buhari. “If PDP wants me out, I am ready to throw the cap away”, was quoted to have said.
