We’ll continue to protect Nigeria’s oil assets – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has restated the determination of his administration to continue to protect the country’s oil assets and installations.

Speaking at a meeting on Tuesday with the Director of Global Upstream of Shell Oil Company at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said he will leave a legacy of improved infrastructure, particularly in the power sector, and also ensure better security in the Niger Delta.

“It is only by doing this that investor morale and confidence will return, and the economy will be positioned on the path of growth,” He said.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, President Buhari commended Shell for their faith in the economy and staying power.

The president also gave assurances on some issues of concern raised by the company especially the protracted issue of cash calls.

The minister of Budget and Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, some weeks ago, revealed that the Federal Government has not been able to fund its counterpart Joint Ventures Companies, JVCs, and cash calls totaling $6 billion for several months due to revenue shortfalls.

The President assured other oil firms that the Federal Executive Council will soon consider a proposal for the easing of unpaid arrears owed by the government.

President Buhari said the security of oil infrastructure will continue to be priority of his administration which will include the dialogue with the stakeholder-communities in the Niger Delta.

He, however, urged oil companies to take more responsibility in the protection of oil installations to complement the efforts of Nigerian Navy in the region.

The Shell director, Andrew Brown, revealed that the company has resumed oil exportation through the Forcados terminal following its restoration.

He also commended the anti-corruption stance of President Buhari’s administration as well as the efforts to streamline and stabilize the economy for long term projects.

WhatsApp Implements ‘End-To-End Encryption’ To Protect Users

The popular messaging service WhatsApp said Tuesday it had implemented “full end-to-end encryption,” a move which steps up privacy but may lead to conflicts with law enforcement agencies.

The Facebook-owned mobile application with one billion users worldwide made the announcement following weeks of intense debate over efforts by US authorities to compel Apple to help break into an encrypted iPhone.

“WhatsApp has always prioritized making your data and communication as secure as possible,” a blog post announcing the change said.

“And today, we’re proud to announce that we’ve completed a technological development that makes WhatsApp a leader in protecting your private communication: full end-to-end encryption.”

This means that “when you send a message, the only person who can read it is the person or group chat that you send that message to,” the statement said.

“No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not oppressive regimes. Not even us.”

Moves by technology firms to implement the kind of encryption where even the companies themselves don’t have “keys” to unlock data have unleashed criticism in law enforcement circles claiming this creates “warrant-proof” spaces for criminals and others.

The blog post by WhatsApp co-founders Jan Koum and Brian Action said encryption is an important tool for its users.

“We live in a world where more of our data is digitized than ever before,” they wrote.

“Every day we see stories about sensitive records being improperly accessed or stolen. And if nothing is done, more of people’s digital information and communication will be vulnerable to attack in the years to come. Fortunately, end-to-end encryption protects us from these vulnerabilities.”

Government Must Protect, Patronize Local Firms To Succeed– Saraki

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Monday said the government has a responsibility to ensure indigenous manufacturers thrive to rebuild the economy and put Nigerians to work.
Mr. Saraki said this when he received a delegation from Innoson Motor Manufacturing Company, Nnewi, led by Innocent Chukwuma, the Chairman and founder of the company, in his office.

He said government should use legislative actions and policy initiatives to protect the local industries as a deliberate way of reviving the economy.

Based in Nnewi, Anambra State, Innoson Motors is the only Nigerian company manufacturing automobile of different range.

Mr. Saraki said one of the actions government should quickly introduce was to ensure that local industries were patronized by government agencies so that Nigerian manufacturers could enjoy the advantages accruing from the big market that her population offers.

“That is why this eighth Senate is determined to amend the Procurement Law to ensure that government agencies patronize Made in Nigeria products,” Mr. Saraki said.

“I am sure the House of Representatives is in support of this. It is our joint responsibility to ensure that you succeed. If you are successful, a lot more small and medium scale enterprises will draw inspiration from you and they will become successful.

“That will help to create jobs which is one of the mandate presented to us by the youths of this country during the last elections. We in the legislature will look at all laws and help to create an enabling environment for local businesses to thrive in Nigeria.”

APC Women Groups Vow To Protect Votes

Women groups from the All Progressives Congress and Labour Party in Ekiti state have vowed to protect their votes during the elections. This is despite the “vote and go home order” by the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba.

The groups were speaking during an APC women summit to drum support for the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. They reasserted their views that they were strongly opposed to any rigging of votes during the upcoming elections. The party encouraged women to exercise their right to vote, adding that election rigging had always been the cause of violence in the country since 1922.

How INEC Intends to Protect Corps Members During Election

National Youth Service Corps members who would be participating in the 2015 general elections have been assured of their safety during and after the elections.

This assurance has been stressed by both the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission

Speaking with newsmen, The Director General of the NYSC scheme, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, said provision has been placed on ground to ensure the protection of lives of NYSC members before, during and after the electoral activities.

He revealed that the NYSC was partnering with some Nigeria security agencies to see that the lives of all the corps members are protected and also to ensure that their welfare and logistics were adequately taken care of during the election.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Comminnisoner in Cross River State, Dr Okay Ezeanyi, while visiting the NYSC secretariat in the state, equally assured corps members that they would be secure. “It is the duty of INEC to provide adequate security for corps members, who will be used as ad hoc staff for the 2015 elections.”

While advising corps members to be of good conduct during the 2015 elections activities, Dr. Ezeanyi noted that they would be paid for their services.
