Labaran Maku Defeated In Nasarawa PDP Gov Primary

Winner of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary election in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Yusuf Agabi, has called on other aspirants to rally round him, to win the general elections next year.

Agabi defeated former Information Minister, Labaran Maku and seven others.

Agabi made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Nasarawa.

He said the victory at the primary was not for him alone but for all members of the party, adding that it would take the collective effort to make the objective of reclaiming the state from the All Progressives Congress in 2015 to be actualised.

Agabi promised to tackle the security challenges facing the state, if given the mandate in next year’s general elections.

NAN reports that Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, had shortly after announcing the results, urged the other aspirants to support the party’s candidate in line with its commitment.

Sen. Solomon Ewuga got 31 votes; former Deputy Gov. Michael Abdul, 28 votes; Deputy Gov. Dameshi Luka, 12 votes, while Yakubu Bala and Chris Mamman polled 4 and one votes respectively.

Unlike Jonathan, APC Will Not Tolerate Corruption – Oyegun

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, has said the party would fight corruption with every resource and vehemence that it could muster, if voted into power next year.

Mr. Odigie-Oyegun stated this at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Declaring corruption as “evil”, he said the party would promote personal integrity, government integrity and national integrity.

He said since independence, Nigeria had experienced varying degrees of corruption to the extent that it had been one of the recurring reasons for change of national leadership.

He noted that in spite of strong public disapproval of corruption, the cancer of corruption had continued to spread.

The APC national chairman said in the last 16 years, corruption had grown exponentially to the point that the world had come to stigmatize Nigeria and Nigerians as synonymous with corruption.

“Our national institutions have been compromised and the continued survival of the country is threatened,” he said.

“The operation of the national budget and the maintenance of the military forces have been so severely compromised by corruption that national development and security have been massively undermined under the Jonathan administration of the last six years.

“Using the corruption perception index {cpi} of Transparency international, Nigeria has maintained a score in the range of 25 percent and ranked amongst the bottom level of corrupt countries deteriorating from a bad score of 27 percent in 2011 to 25 percent in 2013.”

Mr. Odigie-Oyegun said evidence of widespread and rampant corruption abounds in the nation’s everyday life.

Bamanga Tukur Denies Plans To Unseat Mu’azu As PDP chairman

Former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, on Wednesday, debunked the claims that he took the leadership of the party to court over the appointment of Adamu Mu’azu as the chairman after his resignation.

Tukur resigned after much pressure from chieftains of the party to pacify five aggrieved governors who defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Tukur, through his lawyer, Adamson Adeboro, told judicial correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday that his client was joined as a defendants in the matter by the plaintiff, Aliyu Gubrin, who also joined Mu’azu, the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

He said he only filed a counter-claim on behalf of the former chairman.

Adamson said: “My client, Bamanga Tukur, was not the plaintiff in the suit filed to oust Adamu Mu’azu. As a matter of fact, he was joined as 2nd defendant in the suit”.

It would be recalled that Justice Evoh Chukwu had, on Tuesday, dismissed the plaintiff’s suit seeking to oust Mu’azu and PDP chairman on the ground that he does not have locus standi to institute the action.

Less that two days after the case was decided, Gubrin, through his counsel, Lilian Ojimma, filed an appeal against the judgement of justice Chukwu at the Court of Appeal.

In the appeal, Gubrin is begging the court to set aside the judgement and rule that Mu’azu’s appointment, as the national chairman of the party was illegal.

In the appeal, the appellant held that Justice Chukwu erred when he held that he (appellant) lacks the locus standi to institute the action.

He told the court that the lower court erred when he held that the PDP complied with the provision of the party’s constitution without making a pronouncement on whether the 30 days notice required under Section 47(5) of the 1st respondent’s constitution is discretionary and reached wrong conclusion thereby occasioning miscarriage of Justice.

Jonathan’s Tranformation Agenda Not Reaching People With Disabilities – CFCD Group

An advocate of the Centre For Citizens with Disabilities, David Anyaele, has lashed out at the Goodluck Jonathan administration for not reaching out to Nigerians with disabilities through the ‘Transformation Agenda’.

While advocating for the rights of socio-cultural and political inclusion of persons with disabilities on the 2014 edition of the International Day for the Disabled on Sunrise Daily, Anayele argued that “if you watch President Goodluck Jonathan’s utterances, either in private or public discussions, he hardly mentions people with disabilities,” Anayaele said.

He further noted that the impact of President Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘Tranformation Agenda” was not being felt by by people with diabilities.

He noted that many countries all over the world are measuring their ability to attend to the needs of people with disabilities in their country but noted that Nigeria is yet to have a law criminalising the discrimination against such people.

He disclosed that the National Assembly has passed, harmonised and adopted the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Bill, further commending Senate President, David Mark and House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal for their support.

However, he berated the Executive arm of government for “paying lip service to issues of disability”.

Anyaele noted that the bill is currently undergoing ‘cleansing’ for transmission to President Goodluck Jonathan but urged the Clerk of the National Assembly to ensure that the bill is passed to the President, for ascent.

“I’m still surprised why this process will take us such a long time”, he said, arguing that the cleansing was still on since October 15, when the National Assembly had adopted the harmonised version of the bill.

“That is why I’m pleading to the Clerk of the National Assembly to look at the more than 22 million Nigerians living with disabilities, whose future depends on the passage of this bill.

Anyaele further stressed the importance of the bill, noting that the issue of discrimination against people with disabilities will come to an end, as the bill criminalises discrimination on the grounds of disability.

“That bill makes provision for right to education, right to health services” as well as criminalises exclusion of people with disabilities from cultural, social and political life.
