Passenger allegedly slits Okada rider’s throat over N50 balance

A 20-year-old suspect, Abdulrahman Muhammed, has been arrested by the police after he allegedly slit the throat of a commercial motorcyclist and fled with his motorcycle because of N50.

The motorcyclist, simply identified as Owechu, is a member of the Articulate Motorcyclists Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria, Iyana Iyesi branch, in Ado- Odo Ota area of Ogun State.

Owechu, according to the Punch, was taking Muhammed from Ijaba junction to Ijaba Pipeline, a neighbouring community to Iyana Iyesi, when the latter reportedly killed him and fled with the motorcycle, leaving him in a pool of blood.

The suspect was arrested in Iju another neighbouring community where he ran to after the incident.

A relative of the deceased, Emmanuel Omajowu, demanded that the suspect face the full weight of the law, saying Owechu’s death had devastated his parents and the entire family.

He said, “Around 10am last Tuesday, he was taking the Hausa man (Muhammed) from Ijaba junction to Ijaba Pipeline. The place is a developing area and it is usually deserted. They were on the way when he suddenly brought out a knife and slit Owechu’s throat. The killer escaped with the motorcycle.

“Owechu’s death is a big blow to the family. He was friendly and generous. We want the police to prosecute the case diligently and let justice be done.”

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said Okada riders had stopped Muhammed at Iyana Iyesi, because they saw bloodstains on his clothes.

“He lied to them that he had an accident with a passenger and that he was going to a hospital in Iju to treat himself. That was why they allowed him to go. When the corpse of the motorcyclist was later found, a boy said he saw him with Muhammed.

“A leader of Hausa in the community called Muhammed on the telephone to wait at Iju and the police went there to arrest him.”

However, the suspect told the policein hausa that it was an argument over N50 change that led him to stab Owechu.

He said, “When I reached my destination, I gave him N200 and asked for N50 change. He said my fare was N200 and refused to give me change. As we were exchanging words, he slapped me. He removed the knife from my pocket and we started struggling.

“I managed to collect it and stabbed him. I didn’t mean to kill him.”

The report has it that the death of the motorcyclist caused uproar in the town which took the intervention of the community leaders and a police team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Onipanu division, CSP Muyideen Obe, to douse the tension that ensued after Owechu’s killing.

An Okada rider, simply identified as Bolaji, said, “For two days, Hausa traders around the park could not open shops because the other residents were angry. The Hausa leader, baales within communities in Iyesi and the DPO had to come to the park to pacify us.”

A member of AMORAN executive, Gafar Ajayi, said the motorcyclists in the park had been warned against taking passengers to deserted places to avert such incidence.

CSP Muyideen Obe, while confirming the incident, said that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation is done with.

‘One chance’ members get 10 years jail term for killing passenger.

A Katsina State High Court, sitting in Malumfashi, on Thursday, sentenced two middle-aged men, Usman Baba-Muhammad and Muhammad Hassan to 10 years in prison each for homicide.

The convicts, residents of Liman street Narayi and Unguwar Dosa in Kaduna metropolis respectively, were members of a notorious “one chance’’ syndicate, operating along Kaduna to Katsina and Zaria to Funtua highways.

According to the charge sheet, the convicts, on Sept. 23, 2012 while in company of one Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman, now deceased, and two others who are still at large, strangled and caused the death of a passenger, Alhaji Shu’aibu Isah, a trader.

Prosecuting Counsel, Aminu Garba, had earlier told the court that circumstantial evidences led to the arrest of the convicts.

He said that the convicts were apprehended following a vehicle accident immediately after they had committed the offence.

Garba said that the convicts used a cloth to strangulate Isah to death after they robbed him of his valuables and an unspecified amount of money and threw him away on the road.

The prosecutor also said the robbery constituted a separate offence, contrary to section 1(2) (B) of the robbery and firearms Act, Cap R11, Law of the federation.

When the case was first mentioned on Aug. 16, 2013, the convicts pleaded not guilty to the charge for which their Counsel, Mr U. D. Faruk, from the Legal Aid Council, argued in their defence.

Delivering judgment, Justice Abbas Bawale said the prosecution, led by Garba, had successfully established the case of culpable homicide punishable under Section 224 of the Penal Code Law against the convicts.

Bawale also said that the prosecution counsel led six witnesses and tendered six exhibits including the convicts’ confessional statements, a clothing rag used to strangulate the victim along with a measure of maize belonging to the deceased during the trial.

However, the judge said that the prosecution was unable to prove the charge of robbery as the money and the car used to perpetrate the offence were not tendered before the court in evidence as required by law.

He, therefore, discharged the convicts on the charge of robbery accordingly.
Bawale then sentenced the convicts to 10 years in prison each without an option of fine.

The judge also ordered that the term to be served by Hassan would start from the day of first arraignment because he was remanded.

He, however, said that Baba-Muhammad’s term would run from the date of judgment, on the grounds that he was on bail. (NAN)

Flustered flight attendants sprang into action and moved her to the front of the plane where there was more leg room.

Two off-duty nurses on board the nine-hour flight from Dubai to the Philippines, also raced over to help. The healthy baby girl, who has since been named Haven, was delivered in just one hour amid
cheers from fellow passengers.

Lufthansa Passenger Tries To Open Plane Door Mid Flight

A passenger on a Lufthansa flight on its way from Frankfurt to Belgrade on Sunday was detained after he threatened to open the plane door and bring down the aircraft.

Banging on a cockpit door, the man reportedly threatened to down the Lufthansa plane as it was flying over Austria. He was quickly restrained by the crew and some passengers on-board.

“A passenger got up and tried to do something at the door, but was stopped by crew members and other passengers,” said Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels.

Flight 1406 eventually landed in Belgrade, its planned destination, where the troublemaker was handed over to local police and arrested.

The man, who turned out to be an American citizen of Jordanian descent, is currently being interrogated by the police and will spend 48 hours in detention before facing trial, according to Serbia’s public prosecutor, as reported by the Blic daily.

Milan Djukic, a Serbian handball team player who was also on the same plane, said the man had looked suspicious even before they boarded the plane.

“About halfway into the flight he tried to open a plane door, but the cabin crew stopped him,” Djukic told Blic. It was a normal door, which of course cannot be opened in-flight… it was not the cockpit door,” Bartels added.

Assistant coach Milan Mirkovic and handball player Aleksej Rastvorcev calmed the man down, while other passengers had no idea what was going on, he said, adding that two players kept an eye on the rowdy, who was in business class, for the rest of the flight.
