I did not reject chieftaincy title from Ibadan monarch – Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has denied speculations in some quarters that he rejected a chieftaincy title from the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I.

The gossip column of a national newspaper (not The Guardian) had reported that Tinubu turned down the offer of a chieftaincy title of Balogun on him by Oba Adetunji.

In a statement released yesterday by his Media Office, Tinubu said he held the Olubadan of Ibadan in high esteem and could not have rejected a chieftaincy offer from him.

“I hold him in high esteem. Governor Abiola Ajimobi also has respect for him. Why would I reject the offer of a chieftaincy title from him?” he queried.

Ajimobi Tackles Corporate Organisations Over Sponsorship Of Olubadan Coronation

The Oyo State Government has faulted claims by some corporate organisations that they are sponsoring the coronation of the Olubadan-Designate, High Chief Saliu Adetunji, billed for Friday.

The state government said in Ibadan on Thursday that the coronation committee headed by the Otun Olubadan, Dr Lekan Balogun, was the only recognised body vested with preparations for the coronation.

Mr Yomi Layinka, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, said this while speaking with newsmen.

“This committee comprises representatives of the Olubadan-in-council, Iyalode and Olubadan designate’s younger brother, Alhaji Ambali Adetunji,” he said.

Layinka, who heads the media sub-committee for the coronation, said that top government officials led by a former Secretary to the State Government, Mr Olalekan Alli, were also part of the committee.

He said that the Oyo State Signage and Advertisement Agency, which is responsible for giving approvals for mounting billboards, had not received any application from any corporate organisation in respect of the coronation.

Layinka warned that the law enforcement agencies had been put on alert to watch out for illegal display of billboards under the guise of sponsorship of the coronation.

“We need to make a categorical statement that no organisation is mandated or authorised to be branded as sponsors of the Olubadan inauguration ceremony.

“No sponsor has been accredited to manage or brand the event surrounding the coronation ceremony of Olubadan of Ibadan scheduled for the March 4,” he said.

” We understand that a purported advisory group to the Olubadan-Designate has been soliciting support and collaborating with some individuals.

“This is aimed at raising funds and seeking branding and marketing opportunities surrounding the event.

“It should be noted that there is no such accreditation from the recognised coronation committee led by High Chief Lekan Balogun and other high chiefs and government representatives.

“But, the committee will still be willing to do business with them if they follow due process,’’ he said.

Court Rejects Seriki’s Move To Stop Olubadan’s Installation

The move of Seriki line of Ibadan to stop the installation of High Chief Saliu Adetunji as the next Olubadan of Ibadan land suffered a setback on Tuesday when an Oyo State High Court said it would not grant the wish.

Seriki senior Chief Adebayo Oyediji is laying claim to the stool left vacant by the late Olubadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, who died on January 19, 2016, despite the pronouncement by the Olubadan-in-Council that Adetunji, who is the Balogun Olubadan is next in rank to be crowned the next Olubadan.

Oyediji and other Seriki chiefs, had through their counsel, Abideen Adeniran, approached Justice Mukhtar Abimbola of the state High Court to restrain the Olubadan-in-Council from installing th?e Olubadan-designate, Adetunji, as the next Olubadan pending the determination of the applications filed before the court.

Adeniran said the applications were filed before the court because his clients were aware that the defendants had, “Perfected the plan of tampering with the Res in this case, illegally. The Res is the Olubadan of Ibadan chieftaincy stool, which is now vacant.”

Ruling on the applications, Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Abimbola said he would not grant the interim order application.

He said, “I want all other parties to be put on notice so as to be able to respond appropriately, consolidate the applications for the case to move on. Aside this, even if the vacant stool is filled illegally, the court can remove ?the occupier. The Res is not a perishable commodity. So, I hereby refuse the application for interim order. I will not grant any interlocutory injunction since there is an intervening application.”
