Large Turn Out In Okrika As Dame Patience Arrives Home

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday arrived in her home town, Okrika, in Rivers, to a warm welcome by her people. The first lady, who expressed surprise at the large turnout of people, thanked them for their love and support.Jonathan’s visit is the first since the March 28 Presidential election, in which her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, conceded defeat to the President-elect, Maj.-Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

She described their warm welcome as a demonstration of their genuine love and affection for her. Jonathan also thanked them for their prayers, support and belief in her husband’s leadership. Some of the people, who spoke said they were proud of the first lady.

One of them, Mrs Remi Kuku, said the women of Nigeria had never had it so good until the first lady came on board. “History will be kind to her, no matter what anyone or group says about her; she is a goal-getter and I wish her well’’, Kuku said.

Mr James Bright said Jonathan had contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of Okrika people. “She is the voice of the Okrika people; she fought for our cause and we owe her a debt of gratitude. “We thank God for giving her the opportunity to serve and using her as an instrument to elevate the status and development of women in Nigeria’’, Bright said

We Must Rally in Okrika Again, APC Vows

APC has said that the party will still return to Okrika and hold a rally for its governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside.

The chairman of the party in Rivers State, Dr. Davis Ikanya, who stated this on Thursday, said that the APC had the right to campaign in Okrika just like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He condemned the attack on members and supporters of the APC by unidentified gunmen at the rally, describing the PDP as a lawless party.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction the PDP in the state for violating the codes of conduct for the 2015 general elections.

IG Orders Probe Into Okrika Shootings

The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has ordered a full scale investigation into the Tuesday shooting incident at the campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, in Okrika, Rivers State, during which three policemen were injured and one killed.

He has directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge Zone 6 Calabar, Tunde Ogunshakin to take over the investigation and promptly bring to book all the perpetrators, conspirators and sponsors.

Abba further directed a speedy prosecution of suspects arrested in connection with violence across the country, according to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IG also noted with grave concern that despite serious warnings, advices and interfaces with political actors to avoid acts of violence in the ongoing electoral process, such acts have continued.

He restated the resolve and commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, in line with its constitutional and statutory mandate, to continue to provide an impartial level playing ground for all political parties to sell their manifestos and woo the electorate.

“The IG deeply regretted the loss of lives of policemen in the course of providing safety in the electoral process. His heart went out to the families of the slain colleagues as he wished the injured officers speedy recovery and return to national duty,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the IG Special Taskforce on Heinous Crimes, has busted a notorious criminal gang that specialized in snatching of vehicles at different points across the country.

Four suspects linked with these criminal activities have been arrested and 51 vehicles recovered from them.

Okrika Uproar: Amaechi Accuses Patience Jonathan

Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has blamed Dame Patience Jonathan for the attack on members and supporters of the APC, in Okrika, Rivers State, during their rally yesterday.

Speaking to  journalists in Abuja after the enlarged APC leaders’ meeting at the Shehu Yar’Adua centre in Abuja, Amaechi condemned the attack on the APC campaign Rally.

The rally was disrupted by gun shot sounds that surrounded the rally vicinity, also with reports of explosions within and around the Okrika Secondary School area.
