Nigeria’s Manufacturing Index Declines In October

The Manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) stood at 44.1 index points in October 2016, compared with the 42.5 recorded the preceding month.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which disclosed this in the PMI report for October posted on its website yesterday, said the current position of the PMI indicated a slowing decline in the manufacturing sector during the review period.

According to the report, 14 of the 16 sub-sectors surveyed recorded declines in the review month in the following order: electrical equipment; primary metal; fabricated metal products; petroleum & coal products; transportation equipment; computer & electronic products; printing & related support activities; nonmetallic mineral products; plastics & rubber products; furniture & related products; paper products; textile, apparel, leather & footwear; cement and chemical & pharmaceutical products. The remaining two sub-sectors grew in the order: appliances & components and food, beverage & tobacco products.

Also, it showed that at 42.3 index points, the production level index for manufacturing sector declined for the 10th consecutive month, but at a slower rate than the index recorded in September 2016. In the same vein, 13 manufacturing sub-sectors recorded declining production level during the review month in the following order: transportation equipment; petroleum & coal products; electrical equipment; primary metal; computer & electronic products; fabricated metal products; plastics & rubber products; furniture & related products; nonmetallic mineral products; printing & related support activities; paper products; textile, apparel, leather & footwear and chemical & pharmaceutical products.

The appliances & components and cement sub-sectors remained unchanged, while the food, beverage & tobacco products sub-sector grew in the review period.

Meanwhile, the naira appreciated to N465 to the dollar on the parallel market as was predicted last week. But on the interbank FX market, the spot rate of the naira closed at N304.75 to the dollar.

Governor Badaru, deputy, 30,000 others omitted in Oct salary roll.

No fewer than 30,000 persons, under the Jigawa State pay roll were omitted from the payment of October salary including Governor Muhammadu Badaru and his deputy, Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.

Others that missed their October salary include civil servants, political office holders and some members of the state executive council.

The affected persons was said to have failed to submit their banks account details to the state government’s salary and pension department before the deadline given for it.

This was disclosed by the state commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Usman Namadi while speaking to newsmen in Dutse. He said, “All who missed their October salary were those who are yet to submits their Bank Verification Number (BVN) to the salary and pension section ot the Ministry of Finance”.

According to him, the results from the banks showed that out of the 54,000 employees in the state, 28,132 have been cleared, adding the state discovered that about 807 staff have no BVN at all while 25,000 staff account numbers did not match with their BVNs.

Gov. Ganduje flags off October round of polio immunization exercise.

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Saturday, personally immunised six children with polio vaccine to flag off the October round of National Immunisation Exercise against poliomyelitis in Rano local government area of the state.

The governor equally demonstrated hand washing openly to mark this years United Nations Hand Washing Day during the event.

Governor Ganduje disclosed that the routine exercise was to ensure that 100 percent children equivalent to over 3.2 million are adequately captured to stem the spread of the virus.

He noted that for almost two and half years now, the state has not recorded any new polio case, hence the need for unrelenting campaigns to maintain the status.

Ganduje commended the traditional rulers and other key stakeholders for working hand in hand with health workers towards ensuring that all children are immunised, adding that there are no cases of resistance in recent time in the State.

In his speech, the State Commissioner for health, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso said that enough vaccines were provided and qualified staff were engaged in ensuring adequate implementation of the Polio immunisation across the state.

He also inspected the exercise in Bunkure and Dawakin Kudu local government areas shortly after the flag off exercise.

In his remarks, the Emir of Kano represented by the district head of Ajingi, Alh. Wada Aliyu said the emirate council and other stakeholders are much concerned over the permanent effect of disability being caused by the polio virus, therefore directing all traditional leaders to enforce compliance by ensuring that their people present their wards for adequate immunisation against the virus.

Also in her remarks, UNICEF Chief Officer from Katsina Zonal Office, Mrs Padmah Wetty charged parents to inculcate the habit of hygienic protection by embracing the culture of frequent hand washing, pointing out that due to unhygienic lifestyle, millions of people die of diarrhea each year.

On Polio immunisation, Mrs Wetty said she was impressed that the Kano State is really committed towards polio eradication, appreciating the fact that since 2014 no new case was recorded in the state.

Secondus May Step Down In October

There are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may yield to agitations to pick a  substantive national chairman from the North-east to replace Chief Uche Secondus who is presently functioning in acting capacity.

As part of measures to reposition the PDP and refocus its agenda away from the shortcomings of the past, the post-election committee headed by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwerenmadu, is expected to submit its report on September 23.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, confirmed the date for the submission of the post-election report.

Metuh confirmed in a telephone conversation that the committee would conclude its assignment and submit the report.
