Arms scam: Obanikoro’s wife loses Abuja mansion to FG

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Jabi, Abuja, has ordered that Alhaja Moroophat Obanikoro, the wife of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, should forfeit her property pending the outcome of investigations into her husband and children.

The court also rejected a prayer asking the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to pay her the sum of N200m for violating her fundamental human rights.

Obanikoro’s wife has, however, headed for the Appeal Court to challenge the court judgment.

As part of investigations into the $2.1bn arms scam, involving the Office of the National Security Adviser, the EFCC had traced the transfer of about N4.7bn to the Diamond Bank account of Sylvan McNamara, a company allegedly owned by Obanikoro’s two sons – Gbolahan and Babajide.

Out of the N4.7bn, Obanikoro allegedly gave N3.880bn to Ayodele Fayose and Senator Iyiola Omisore in July 2014, when they were the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidates in Ekiti and Osun states respectively.

Part of the money allegedly given to Fayose was said to have been converted to $5.377m and handed to him at Spotless Hotel, Ado-Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts.

Obanikoro allegedly kept over N600m to himself.

The EFCC subsequently seized a house in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State allegedly belonging to Obanikoro’s sons – Gbolahan and Babajide – and a property located at 44 Mamman Kotangora Crescent, Katampke Extension, Abuja, belonging to their mother.

However, Obanikoro’s wife argued that she bought the property over seven years before the alleged arms scam took place.

She said the EFCC had no right to punish her for any crime allegedly committed by her husband and urged the court to award her N200m.

Obanikoro’s wife demanded “an order setting aside the sealing of the property; an order directing the EFCC to tender an unreserved public apology for the unlawful and unconditional invasion of the aforesaid property and the sum of N200,000,000 as general damages for the unlawful and unconstitutional invasion of the property.”

In an affidavit, deposed to by one Jackson Edet, the EFCC claimed that Obanikoro’s wife could not claim to be ignorant of her husband’s alleged crime.

The commission said Moroophat’s husband and her sons collected over N600m from the ONSA for a non-existent contract.

The EFCC argued that investigation had shown that, “the property belongs to Musiliu Obanikoro and he paid for the statutory charges for the property.”

The commission added, “That a lawyer, Tejumola Adeboye, who volunteered a statement to the commission, stated that he managed the said property and remits the rent to MON Integrated Services (a company allegedly owned by Obanikoro, which is also under probe).”

In his ruling, the Justice Y. Halilu said he could not stop the EFCC from doing its work, adding that all Nigerians must unite in the fight against corruption.

He added, “I shall refuse the application because it is most unmeritorious and specially packaged to deceive this court. God forbid.”

Obanikoro sues EFCC over seizure of property, demands apology.

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Federal High Court, Lagos over the seizure and detention of his property.

The ex-minister and his family are seeking a court’s declaration that the forceful seizure of their personal effects constitutes a gross violation of their rights.

The applicants include Obanikoro’s wife Moroophat, his sons Gbolahon, Babajide and wife Fati. The applicants are praying the court for an order, setting aside the forceful detention of their properties on June 14, 2016.

EFCC claimed Obanikoro received suspicious payments from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) through companies linked to the family.

For instance, the Commission said that about $1million was transferred from the ONSA to Mob Integrated Services on March 18, 2015. But, the family, through their counsel, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), said the documents and properties seized by the EFCC had nothing to do with the ONSA.

They claimed that the Commission violated Regulation 13 of the EFCC (Enforcement Regulation) 2010, which provides that it shall “apply and obtain” a court order to enter and search any premises.

However, EFCC has urged the court to dismiss the suit, insisting that it acted in accordance with the provisions of the law. Justice Abdulazeez Anka has fixed March 28 for ruling.

JUST IN: Court dismisses Obanikoro’s case against Sahara Reporters

The Supreme Court of the state of New York has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, against SaharaReporters and its publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

Mr. Obanikoro, a former senator, and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, alleged that Mr. Sowore and his media group committed libel by implicating him in the Ekiti State election rigging scandal and by allegedly reporting that he “killed many people in Lagos.”

The former minister argued in court that the reporting by Mr. Sowore and his website harmed his reputation in both Nigeria and the United States.

The former senator sued Mr. Sowore in New York, where the headquarters of SaharaReporters is located.

Mr. Sowore’s counsel, Robert Balin, moved for dismissal of the case on the grounds of non conveniens, meaning that another court – in this instance, a Nigerian court – would be better suited than the one in New York to hear the case.

The defendant argued that since the alleged offences were committed in Nigeria, a Nigerian court should ideally hear the case.

Mr. Sowore’s lawyers also argued that all the pertinent documents and witnesses are in Nigeria, not New York.

Justice Debra James subsequently granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss the case, saying the matter should be resolved in a Nigerian court.

The judge ruled that the case being ”highly political in nature, the Nigerian government has a compelling interest in resolving this matter through its judicial process.”

“Accordingly, it is ordered that the motion to dismiss this complaint on the ground that New York is an inconvenient forum is granted and the complaint is dismissed with costs and disbursements to defendants upon submission of an appropriate bill of costs,” the judge said in her ruling.

Obanikoro in Fresh N450m Poll Cash Scandal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday quizzed a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, for allegedly receiving N450m from the Coordinator of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in Lagos State, Adewale Onilere, during the countdown to the 2015 presidential election.

Operatives disclosed that the N450m was part of the N23bn ($115m) allegedly disbursed to the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 36 states of the federation by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

A source at the EFCC told our correspondent that Onilere, who is the Chairman of the PDP in the Somolu Local Government Area, received N650m from the campaign organisation out of which N450m was given to Obanikoro.

He said, “Onilere received N650m and then delivered N450m to Obanikoro at his house. Onilere gave Obanikoro the money in the presence of some PDP leaders.

“So, on Wednesday, we invited Obanikoro to tell his side of the story. However, Obanikoro denied receiving any money from Onilere.

“Since Obanikoro is currently on administrative bail, we let him go. However, we have invited Obanikoro and Onilere to come to our office in two weeks’ time to face each other. Surely, we will get to the bottom of this.”

In a terse text message, however, Onilere denied handling stolen funds.

“It is certainly false and I know nothing about it. Thanks,” he said.

Obanikoro and his two sons, Babajide and Gbolahan, are currently under a separate investigation involving N4.7bn which was allegedly diverted from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The ONSA, under the leadership of the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), was alleged to have paid N4.7bn into the bank account of a company, Sylvan McNamara, in which Obanikoro’s sons were directors.

Obanikoro had said in his statement on oath at the EFCC that after receiving the money in June 2014, he gave N1.219bn to the then governorship candidate of the PDP in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose; while N1.3bn was given to the PDP candidate in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

He also confessed to giving Fayose a separate $5.377m at Spotless Hotel in Ekiti State in the presence of party stalwarts including the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Mr. Tope Aluko.

Obanikoro was said to have kept about N785m for himself, which he allegedly spent while campaigning ahead of the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State, which Mr. Jimi Agbaje won.

However, the EFCC asked him to return about N584m of which he has already returned N137m.

N4.7b: Obanikoro Returns N134m To EFCC, Says He Will Repay N450m Next Year

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, on Monday returned N30m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This brings the total amount of money he has returned to the EFCC to N134m.

A source at the EFCC said, “Obanikoro came on Monday and presented a draft of about N30m. Initially we did not want to collect it because it is small compared to what he is supposed to have given us. However, the legal department advised us to collect it.”

Obanikoro had in October returned N104m to the commission. The ex-minister, who returned to Nigeria last month after spending about 15 months in the United States, was accused of receiving N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Obanikoro had said in his statement of oath at the EFCC that after receiving the money in 2014, he gave N1.219bn to the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, while N1.3bn was given to the PDP candidate in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

He also confessed to giving Fayose a separate $5.377m at Spotless Hotel in Ekiti State in the presence of party leaders including the then PDP Secretary, Mr. Tope Aluko.

Obanikoro was said to have kept about N785m for himself, which he allegedly spent while campaigning ahead of the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State. Mr. Jimi Agbaje won the primary.

However, the EFCC asked Obanikoro to return about N584m out of which he had already returned N134m.

At the EFCC office on Monday, Obanikoro promised the detectives that he would return the remaining N450m in 2017.

The source said, “About N450m is remaining and Obanikoro has promised to pay the rest in 2017. He will also be reporting at our office every two weeks.”

At the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba last week, Mr. Alade Sunday, a manager at Zenith Bank, narrated how Obanikoro delivered about N1.219bn to Fayose’s aide, Abiodun Agbele, for onward transmission to his boss.

He had also said it took the cashiers about 10 days to count the money.

Sunday had said Obanikoro flew with the cash to Akure Airport and the money was loaded into bullion vans.

He had said, “When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale.

“Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signalled me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were loaded into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, Agbele and I drove back to the bank.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt Omisore had appealed to the EFCC to return his passport to him to enable him to travel out of the country.

A source at the commission said, “We cannot return his passport to him now because he has not yet returned half of the money. He has returned only N350m out of N1.3bn. When he returns half, then the EFCC can consider returning the passport to him.”

Alleged N4.7bn Fraud: Obanikoro To Begin Testimony Against Fayose Soon

A reliable source said, “Senator Obanikoro came to the EFCC office on Monday morning as part of investigations into the N4.7bn. Since he has confessed that he was the one who collected the N4.7bn and distributed it, he is in the best position to testify in court.

“The EFCC wants him to testify against Agbele which will also build a strong case against Fayose who currently enjoys immunity. Obanikoro has agreed and will be listed as one of the EFCC witnesses.

“If Agbele is convicted, it automatically means that Fayose will also be convicted once he is charged in 2018. So let Fayose continue to play games. Omisore and Obanikoro are cooperating and returning money. Their troubles will end soon while Fayose’s own will keep getting worse.”

Obanikoro agrees to testify against Fayose over alleged N4.7bn fraud.

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, was at the Abuja office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday where he agreed to testify against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and his aide, Mr. Abiodun Agbele.

When contacted, Obanikoro’s lawyer, Mr. James Onoja (SAN), said he was not aware that his client was with the EFCC but promised to find out.

“I have been in court all day so I was not aware that he (Obanikoro) was with the EFCC. I will find out,” he said.

However, a source said that the EFCC could still charge Obanikoro to court if he failed to cooperate with the EFCC.

He said, “Obanikoro has returned N104m and has pledged to return N480m in instalments every four months but if he cannot cooperate with the EFCC, then he and his sons may be charged along with the others.

“Plea bargain and negotiation are a standard practice in criminal justice across the world.”

Obanikoro had told the EFCC in his statement of oath that he received N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki in June 2014.

In his statement, the ex-minister told the EFCC that he handed N1.3bn to the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore; while N1.219bn was given to Fayose through his aide, Agbele, during the build-up to the Ekiti governorship election which Fayose won.

Obanikoro was said to have converted a remainder of the money into $5.377m and handed it to Fayose at Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts.

The ex-minister is believed to have kept about N785m for himself, an action which is said to have angered Fayose.

Agbele is currently standing trial before Justice Dimgba Igwe of a Federal High Court for allegedly receiving N1.219bn on behalf of Fayose.

At the last sitting, Mr. Alade Sunday, a manager and branch Head of Zenith Bank, narrated how the money was disbursed on the instructions of Agbele.

He had also said it took the cashiers about 10 days to count all the money.

Sunday had said Obanikoro flew the cash to Akure Airport and the money was loaded onto a bullion van.

He had said, “When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale.

“Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signalled to me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were loaded into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, Agbele and I drove back to the bank.

“When we got to the bank, we ‘bundle counted’ the cash and it was N724,500,000. Agbele told us that more money was still coming and then, Obanikoro’s ADC left for the airport immediately.

“In the evening, all of us left for the airport a second time. After the passengers disembarked, we offloaded the cash bags into our bullion van and drove back to the bank to ascertain how much the cash was. The second tranche was N494,990,000, bringing the total to about N1.219, 490,000.

“We headed straight to our zonal head office where instructions were given by Agbele on how the funds were to be credited to various accounts.”

We spent 10 days counting the N1.2bn cash collected by Fayose’s aide – Witness

Alade Oluseye Sunday, a witness in the case against Abiodun Agbele, an aide to the governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, on Monday said it took ten working days to count the N1.2bn cash collected from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Sunday, who was the branch manager of Zenith Bank, Akure at the time, stated this during cross examination before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja.

Sunday, who is the first prosecution witness stated that the sum of N1.2bn was conveyed via two aircrafts and was handed over to him by the first defendant (Agbele).

“The money was mostly in N1000 notes while the rest were in N500 bills. Agbele gave us the instruction to transfer the monies to different accounts. Some were paid into De Privateer Limited, some into Spotless investment limited while some where paid into Ayodele Fayose’s account”, Sunday maintained.

The witness, while reading from exhibit AA1B stated that, N100m was credited to Spotless Investments; N219.490m was credited to De Privateer Limited; another N300m was credited to De Privateer Limited; another N200m was credited to De Privateer Limited; N200m was also credited to De Privateer Ltd; N137m was credited to Ayodele Fayose’s account and the balance N263m was taken by Abiodun Agbele to Ado Ekiti.

“I saw Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, come down from the aircraft to speak with Agbele”, he said.

Under cross-examination by Agbele’s counsel, Mike Ozekome, Sunday maintained that he had never met the first defendant and had never discussed any money matters with him prior to June 2014.

“I got worried when I saw the huge amount of money conveyed by the aircrafts that day. It took us ten working days to count the money and each day, the uncounted sum is stored in the strong room as ‘boxed’ cash”, said Sunday.

Asked whether he reported the transaction as suspicious to any authority, the witness said he did not because it was not his job to do so.

The case has been adjourned to November 17, 2016 for further hearing.
Agbele is facing an 11-count charge for allegedly diverting N4.6b from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Obanikoro undertakes to return N480m, submits passports to EFCC

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has signed an undertaking to return N480m to the Federal Government, The PUNCH has learnt.

Obanikoro has also submitted his United States of America and Nigerian passports to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

In addition, the ex-minister has provided two sureties who are directors in the Federal Civil Service.

Impeccable sources told our correspondent that these were part of the conditions given to the ex-minister for his release.

A source said, “The EFCC asked Obanikoro to submit his passports. He was only willing to drop his Nigerian passport but he has finally submitted the American one. He was asked to produce two directors, who must also present a three-month salary pay slip.

“He has returned N100m and has pledged to return N480m. The actual balance is meant to be N685m, but he was able to provide receipts for some transactions. He paid N85m to someone and that person has been traced.

“He also bought some bulletproof vehicles when he was minister and they will be handed over to the EFCC. The cost of the vehicles will be deducted from the amount that should be returned. Having met the conditions, he should be released any time from now.”

Obanikoro, who left the country around June 2015, was detained by the EFCC on October 17, 2016, after returning and surrendering himself to the commission in Abuja.

He was detained for his alleged role in the diversion of N4.7bn from the imprest account of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The money was said to have been paid into the bank account of Sylvan McNamara, a company in which his two sons, Babajide and Gbolahan, were directors at the time.

Obanikoro reportedly told detectives that out of the N4.7bn, he paid N3.880bn to Ayodele Fayose and Senator Iyiola Omisore in July 2014, when they were the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidates of Ekiti and Osun states respectively.

However, detectives challenged Obanikoro with evidence that he also received N785m from the money and asked him to return it.

A source at the EFCC said, “Obanikoro claimed that he used part of his own share to do an anti-Boko Haram campaign in Lagos in 2014. However, we found out that he wasn’t telling the whole truth because some of the money was spent on his governorship campaign when he was contesting against Jimi Agbaje during the PDP primary.

“So, we asked him to return his own share of the money and he has promised to do so.”

Part of the money allegedly given to Fayose was converted to $5.377m and handed to him at Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts.

Abuja bizman loses filling station, complex to commission

Meanwhile, the EFCC has seized a filling station and a shopping complex from a man who described himself as a building engineer, Abdullahi Rilwan, for failing to explain where he got the money to buy the properties.

The EFCC Act Section 71 (b) gives the commission the power to commence investigations into the property of any person if it appears to the EFCC that the person’s lifestyle and extent of properties are not justified by law.

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Thursday, that Rilwan was also arrested for offences bordering on operating a land racketeering syndicate, criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of classified documents, obtaining by false pretences and money laundering.

According to the commission, the suspect was first accosted in the Kuje Area Council of Abuja during a separate investigation into the $2.1bn arms procurement fraud.

Detectives were said to have visited the area to verify the ownership of several properties suspected to be proceeds of money laundering.

In the course of investigating the ownership of a filling station and a shopping complex both still under construction, located along Pegi Road in the Kuje Area Council, operatives gathered that Rilwan was in charge of the construction work.

The statement added, “Rilwan, who was subsequently engaged, denied ownership of the station but confirmed he was the engineer in charge of the construction work. He admitted to being the owner of the shopping complex. He also told operatives that he was the owner of two companies, Kaibo Oil and Gas and Kaibo Properties, but could not account for his source of wealth.

“A visit to his office, however, revealed that he was involved in several shady and suspicious business deals.”

It was learnt that the revelation made EFCC operatives to beam its searchlight on Rilwan’s business activities.

Subsequently, on October 31, a search and arrest warrant was executed at his Kuje residence.

The statement added, “The search unearthed several implicating documents in his custody, many of which he uses to sell plots of land. Properties recovered from his residence in Kuje included letter-heads in the name of Kuje Area Council, allocating plots of land, an ‘Irrevocable Power of Attorney’ in favour of Air Commodore Bassey Inyang, a ‘Right of Occupancy’ document granted to Henryville Farms, Abuja, among other implicating documents.

“The filling station and the complex are currently under investigation and he would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

Musiliu Obanikoro Returns N100m To EFCC

Former Minister of State for Defence during President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Musiliu Obanikoro has reportedly returned N100 million to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).Obanikoro was detained after he presented himself to the agency for investigations into the alleged receipt of N2bn from former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.Sources at the EFCC told newsmen that the Commission’s chairman, Ibrahim Magu had earlier rejected Obanikoro’s offer to return N100 million. It was gathered that Magu demanded a refund of N600 million within a stipulated time, but was rejected by Obanikoro“He refused to sign the pledge, saying the money was too much,” an EFCC source said.EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren also confirmed that Obanikoro has returned the money.Uwujaren said the agency is verifying the payment and continuing investigations.

Father Kukah visits FFK, Obanikoro & Abati in EFCC cells.

Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Father Matthew Hassan Kukah has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over the state of its facilities in Abuja, which he described as ‘clean and orderly”.

He made the remark Monday during an unscheduled visit to the Commission’s detention facility and clinic, where he felicitated with some of the inmates which included former ministers, Femi Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and a former Presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati.

The revered priest, who was conducted round the facilities by the acting Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu, expressed delight that the detainees appeared in high spirits despite the discomfort of temporary restriction. He urged them not to be downcast and to see their current travail as divine.

Kukah who prayed for the inmates before his departure, summed up his visit thus: “I discussed with some detained suspects like Femi Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and Reuben Abati; and I am quite pleased they are looking cheerful.

“I was also happy with the humility of the acting Chairman who took me round and the way he interacted with the detainees. This is what is important for our country so that nobody takes these kinds of things personal. I am happy I came.

“We are all staff of EFCC to the extent that we want a better country and we are doing what needs to be done. We’ll continue praying that God guides you, keeps you safe and ensure that we build a country that we all will be proud of.

“This country has suffered so much, but we hope and pray that we can bring the suffering and trauma to an end as we collectively fight corruption,” Kukah said.

Also speaking, Magu assured the inmates that their incarceration was not personal, stressing that “This is all about Nigeria and making it better. And I think there is a consensus around this,” he said.

DasukiGate: “My story will be like that of Jesus Christ” — Fayose

Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose has debunked the claim by former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, that he gave him (Fayose) part of the money he got from ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Fayose said the claim by Obanikoro, who is currently in EFCC custody, that he collected some money from him, was a clear indication that he was drowning and looking for someone to go down with him.

Speaking with Sun, Fayose said despite the myraids of allegations leveled against him, he would come out pure.

He compared his current situation to the Biblical Jesus, who despite many trials, came out victorious.

He said, “I wouldn’t want to join issues with EFCC or Obanikoro. But I remembered very well that Obanikoro was firing very serious salvos at the EFCC before now.

“I remembered all his statements in the press, but this dramatic return, he did not stop at the airport and there was a clear entrance straight to the EFCC custody; it simply shows that there is a hand of Saul in the voice of Jacob.

“I’m used to all these conspiracies and the fact remains that in all these, Jesus is Lord, in all these, victory is sure, in all these, I’ve not lost any battle and I’ll not lose any. Let me believe that Obanikoro did not say all these because whatever you say, you would have to prove it in court.

It is not enough to just say it. If he’s saying all these to get out of trouble, it is just a drama of the moment. I know he is looking for ways out of the quagmire as his house was seized, his bank accounts were frozen and all that. May be, my brother and friend, Obanikoro is looking for easy way out so they have to heap everything on Fayose.

“I’m used to all these. In the meantime, I am busy as governor of Ekiti delivering good governance to my people. What they wanted during their conspiracy at my first tenure was to stop me politically forever. They didn’t want me to rise politically again; that was what all the first poultry allegation with EFCC in 2006 is all about but I won.

“Today, I can adjudge what would happen tomorrow by the victory of yesterday. So, their fear is my rising profile: their fear is – where is this Fayose going?

“Don’t you forget that in the Bible, the three wise men who came to greet Jesus Christ and who saw tomorrow about Jesus Christ just as the then King Herod too, saw tomorrow about Jesus Christ and he told the wise men to come back to him and reveal where Jesus was so that he could go and kill him.

“But the wise men didn’t go back that way. So, they saw my tomorrow and knew that I was rising. I’m going to be among those people that would take over from them. I have a future, I have greatness ahead of me and no greatness comes without a battle and struggle.

“So, they should keep their gun powder dry, behave like a responsible organization whose strength is in their coded investigation. They should stop messing themselves up. You see, nobody knows what would be the situation in two years time, but when we get to the bride, we would cross it.

“Again, if Obanikoro says he gave me such huge money, where did he get it from? Why will he take such huge cash like that? Why will an honourable federal minister of the country be saying that he took cash like this and gave to me?

“You can now see how EFCC operates, but we will talk about that when we get to court. They are only looking for ways for nexus, to link me at all cost, to destroy me at all cost.

‘It is just like in the Bible when they asked the people should we replace the thief with Jesus for the punishment but the people said no, it is Jesus we want.

“So, it’s Fayose that is all they want in all these drama, I hope that by now, they would have released all Obanikoro’s confiscated assets and property.”

“How Obanikoro, Others Airlifted N1.2bn Cash For Fayose” – Zenith Bank Official

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday called its first prosecution witness before a Federal High Court in Abuja in the trial of an aide of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, who is being prosecuted for money laundering charges.

?The first prosecution witness, Oluseye Alade, who is an official of Zenith Bank Plc, gave a breakdown of how the sum of N1.2bn allegedly airlifted to Akure by a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro on June 17, 2016, was distributed by Agbele.

He did not disclose where the aircraft flew from.

But he said he was informed by a colleague of his in Ibadan to wait for the arrival of the aircraft.

The EFCC had on August 3, 2016 aarraigned Agbele before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High on 11 counts of money laundering involving about N4,685,723,000,000.

The money was allegedly taken by former National Security Adviser from the account of the office of the NSA domicile in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The prosecution alleged that on June 17, 2014, Agbele, Obanikoro and other suspects (said to be at large), took N1,219,000,000 from the total N4,685,723,000,000, when they “reasonably ought to have known” that the money was part of proceeds of Dasuki’s unlawful activity.”

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Wahab Shittu, the witness who is the Branch Head of the Zenith Bank in Akure gave details of how the N1.2bn was disbursed on the instruction of Agbele.

He said the money was airlifted to Akure by Obanikoro and others in two batches.
He said the money was moved from the airport to the bank by a bullion van on the two occasions of the arrival of the aircraft.”

He said, “I first met Agbele on June 17, 2014. On that day, my zonal head, Abiodun Oshode, informed me that he recieved a message from Lawrence Akande, the Zonal Head of Oyo State Branch of Zenith Bank that a customer will be coming to the bank from the airport with cash. He said that I should arrange for our bullion van to be taken to the airport to convey the cash when it arrives.

“After about an hour, Oshode walked to me that the customer is in the bank and I followed him to his office where he introduced Mr. Abiodun Agbele to me as the customer.

“Agbele told me that they had security details and that I should not bother about policemen since they had enough. That was how I, my Zonal Head, the bullion van driver, Agbele and his team drove to the airport.

“When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale.

“Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signaled me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were evacuated into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, I and Agbele drove back to the bank.

“When we got to the bank, we bundle-counted the cash and it was N724,500,000.

“The second tranche was N494,990,000, bringing the total about N1.219, 490,000
“We headed straight to our zonal head office where instructions were given by Agbele on how the funds were to be credited to various accounts.

“However, because of the amount involved, we needed to detail-count before crediting the accounts the next day. All these are recorded in the statements I volunteered to the EFCC.”

The four statements earlier made by the witness to the EFCC were tendered by the prosecuting counsel and admitted by the court as exhibits.

Pulse: Obanikoro is going down, but he won’t do so alone.

The walls are closing in on Musiliu Obanikoro, former Minister of State for Defence.

Obanikoro has been singing his way deeper and deeper into trouble, sources at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have told Pulse.

Obanikoro surprisingly turned himself into the waiting arms of the anti-graft agency as soon as he touched down in Nigeria from the United States last week.

The former Lagos State Governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being investigated for frittering N4.745bn.

The sum came from the $2.1bn meant for the procurement of arms but which was diverted to meet political ends by erstwhile National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, investigators say.

Obanikoro has been with the EFCC since October 17, 2016 and it’s quite the turnaround for a man who only said in June that his trial was a media one – a circus.

“Suggestions of an EFCC investigation have dwelt solely in the realm of rumours, over which I have sued several media organisations to court,” Obanikoro had thundered from his safe haven in the U.S.

“I cannot submit myself to such glaring witch-hunt, injustice and charade but I’ll fight it legally, with God and clear conscience on my side.

“Since EFCC opted to make this a media trial/circus, let them make public any document linking me or any of my children to any financial scam.

“The allegations are lies, not backed by fact or evidence but a burning desire to obliterate the opposition and keep Nigerians distracted. Rumours of extradition are also lies – false allegations cannot stand up to any decent legal inquiry in a civilised system such as in the US”, Obanikoro had barked.

EFCC operatives have told Pulse that it’s a different Obanikoro who has been cooling his heels in custody of the anti-graft agency since last week.

“He’s been singing like a canary. He’s mentioned Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose. He’s also mentioned Iyiola Omisore. You’ll recall that Fayose and Omisore were some of the voices in that Ekiti election rigging audio tape which became public in 2015”.

Obanikoro has confessed to handing over N2.3bn to Fayose; air-lifted through Akure in Ondo State, in two chartered aircrafts.

The money found its way into Ekiti in the run-up to the 2014 Governorship contest in the South West State.

Fayose won that election, unseating the incumbent, John Kayode Fayemi.

Obanikoro has also admitted that he transferred N1.7 billion of the sum to the 2014 Governorship candidate of the PDP in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

Unlike Fayose, however, Omisore came up short in Osun State. Rauf Aregbesola of the APC, nullified the billions making its way round the country at the time from the PDP, in his home State.

Obanikoro has also disclosed to investigators that he was disbursing the money following orders from Dasuki.

Dasuki was NSA to then President Goodluck Jonathan.

Another EFCC operative told the press:  “He (Obanikoro) admitted that he transferred N1.7bn to Senator Iyiola Omisire out of the N4.685bn paid into the Sylva Mcnamara’s account on the instructions of Col. Sambo Dasuki, the former NSA.

“He said a total of N3.880bn was transferred to Fayose and Omisore from the N4.685bn that was transferred to the company account of Sylva McNamara.

“The former minister told the commission that Tope Aluko (the then Ekti State Secretary of the PDP) and other PDP leaders were present when the dollars were handed over to Fayose, who took them to a room next to where they met.”

An EFCC operative who spoke to Pulse on the basis of anonymity because he had not been authorized to comment on the subject, said: “We have him (Obanikoro) exactly where we want him. The feeling we are getting is that he won’t go down without the likes of Fayose and Omisore”.

How Obanikoro Hid $5.37 Million in Military Trunk For Fayose – Aluko

A former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Dr. Tope Aluko, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of how a former Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, handed over $5.377m cash to Governor Ayo Fayose.

He said the cash, which was put in a green military truck by the ex-minister, was given to Fayose in the presence of nine PDP elders.

He listed those who witnessed the collection by Fayose as a former Secretary to the State Government, a senator, two members of the House of Assembly, a former Director-General and others.

Aluko, it was learned, had one-and-a-half hours hostile encounter with Obanikoro.

Upon receiving the large suitcase (box) and a key to open it, he said, Fayose and Obanikoro retired into an inner room of Spotless Hotel for a brief discussion.

Aluko made the revelation during a grilling by the EFCC team against the backdrop of the ongoing probe of how the ex-minister shared the N4.745billion wired to a company linked to him by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The N4.685billon was transferred to Sylva McNamara Limited out of which N60million ($5.377m) cash was personally given to Fayose by the ex-minister.

Obanikoro, however, told the EFCC team that he gave Fayose the cash in the presence of PDP elders including Dr. Tope Aluko.

According to a source, Aluko told the detectives: “The ex-minister brought the $5.377million cash to Spotless Hotel for Fayose in a green military trunk. He was accompanied by four military men.

“Obanikoro handed over the trunk and a key to Fayose in the presence of nine eminent PDP elders in the state.

“Holding a piece of paper, Obanikoro later entered into an inner room in the hotel for a brief discussion with Fayose. Maybe the paper was for Fayose to acknowledge the receipt of the cash.

“Upon coming out, Fayose opened the trunk with the key and we all saw it was filled with dollars. We had a list of how we wanted to use the money but we had not expended the Naira cash at hand.

“Fayose, who asked me to call other PDP leaders, later took the trunk to his room at the hotel for safe keeping. That was the last we heard about the cash.”

Another source in EFCC claimed that Aluko and Obanikoro had about “one-and-a-half hours of unfriendly encounter” before interrogators.

The source said: “Both Obanikoro and Aluko were brought to the interrogation room by EFCC detectives. They asked if Aluko had ever met the ex-minister, the ex-PDP Secretary in Ekiti State said: ‘Obanikoro was the liaison personnel between the Presidency and Fayose.

“He confirmed that he had met with the ex-minister at a meeting in Abuja before the delivery of the money.

“Aluko also admitted that he was present when Obanikoro brought the over $5.377m cash to Governor Ayo Fayose.”

The EFCC had uncovered how Sylva McNamara, which was incorporated in November 2011, was used for the slush funds from ONSA.

Obanikoro reveals how he gave N1.7bn to Omisore.

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, yesterday, told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that he gave former Osun State Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, N1.7 billion out of the N4.7 billion he got from ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Obanikoro had earlier confessed to the EFCC that he handed over $5.377m to Fayose.

A source told Vanguard that “The former minister, Obanikoro, has been cooperating with our operatives by giving detailed information regarding the N4.7 billion traced to him and companies linked to his sons.

“Obanikoro has confirmed that he actually transferred the sum of N1.7 billion from the NSA’s Office to Senator Iyiola Omisore but did not say why he did so and what the money was meant for.

“Obanikoro said out of N4.685 billon transferred to Sylva McNamara Limited, the sum of N3.880 billion was transferred to both Ayodele Fayose and Senator Omisore through cash and bank transfers.

“The dollar contents were handed over to Fayose personally by me in the presence of some party leaders and he collected it and took it to the room next to where we were all seated.”

The source further quoted the former Ambassador to Ghana as saying, “The location where I gave the dollars to him is called Spotless Hotel, Ado-Ekiti.”

“One of the party leaders that was present was Dr. Tope Aluko, who was then the Secretary of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. I transferred N1.7 billion to Omisore. The money was paid into his account and companies nominated by him.”

The source added that: “The former minister confessed that he never had any business dealings with Omisore and did not execute any contract for him to warrant the transfer of the huge sum of money from the ONSA to companies nominated by him.

“Omisore himself is under investigation. Obanikoro was very clear in the way the transaction was carried out. He did not mince words at all.

EFCC had in July this year arrested and detained Omisore over the money in question.

Omisore was later granted bail under stringent conditions.

Obanikoro Makes Shocking Confessions To EFCC, Throws Fayose Under The Bus.

Former Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro has disclosed how he gave Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, part of the N4.745billion made available to him by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The said cash was wired into the company, Sylva Mcnamara within seven months in 2014.

Obanikoro, who is still in detention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision, EFCC, said N2.23billion was transferred to Fayose. While $5,377,000 was given to Fayose in cash, N1.3billion was received by the governor’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele.

He admitted that the N1.3billion was flown to Akure airport in two chartered flights for delivery to Agbele.

Obanikoro said he is not the owner of Sylva Mcnamara that was used to transfer the funds to Fayose.

A source told The Nation that “the sum of N2.2billion was transferred to Sylva Mcnamara for onward transfer to Mr. Ayodele Fayose on the instruction of the NSA.

“The sum of N1.3billion cash was brought in a bullion van by Diamond Bank on the instruction of the NSA.

“In addition, the sum of N60million was converted to dollars at the rate of N168 per dollar and altogether the sum of $5,377,000 was handed over in cash by me to Mr. Fayose while the N1.3billion was received by Mr. Fayose’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele in the presence of my Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Lt. Adewale who also accompanied them to the bank along with the bank officials.

“I didn’t interact with the bank officials. I called Fayose before the funds were handed over to Mr. Abiodun Agbele. I spoke to Fayose with my phone at Akure airport.”

Obanikoro said he “took off with the first flight with part of the money while the second flight brought the remaining funds to Akure local airport and I directed that it should be handed over to the same person.”

The source added: “He told us that he is “ not the owner of the company in question but introduced the owner, Mr. Kareem Taiwo to the NSA, Mr. Sambo Dasuki when the threat of Boko Haram became more visible in Lagos.

“He said the government wanted to incorporate local input into the intelligence gathering and prevention of terrorist attack on Lagos and the South-West in general.”

Ekitigate: Fayose tackles Obanikoro over ex-minister’s confessions.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has described the voluntary return of ex-minister Musiliu Obanikoro to Nigeria as “dramatic and compromised,” following the latter’s alleged confessions to the anti-graft agency, EFCC.

Mr. Fayose said he will not be distracted by Mr. Obanikoro’s reported confessions that he transferred N2.3billion to the Ekiti leader from the Office of the National Security Adviser to fund his 2014 governorship election.

The governor, in a statement on Wednesday signed by his Special Adviser on Public Communication and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said the report was a plot by the Federal Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to implicate him “at all cost.”

Mr. Obanikoro, who turned himself in to the EFCC on Monday, has been in EFCC custody since then facing interrogation on allegations of corruption and receipt of funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser without contract awards.

The former minister of state for defense arrived Nigeria on Monday after leaving the country in 2015 amid the corruption allegations. He was alleged to have facilitated the disbursement of the funds to Mr. Fayose in the build up to the 2014 election in Ekiti through Biodun Agbele, an associate of the governor.

A report by Punch Newspaper on Wednesday said Mr. Obanikoro had owned up to the EFCC on the transfers.

A source close to the former minister also confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Obanikoro was “cooperating” with the anti-graft commission and had written at least two statements to that effect.

But Mr. Fayose dismissed the report, saying it was the commission’s usual media trial.

“This project ‘Fayose must be implicated at all cost’ will definitely not put food on the tables of Nigerians and for all I care, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its collaborators can keep running from pillar to post while I keep delivering good governance to Ekiti and its people,” he said.

“We have gone past this stage of media trial, EFCC should rather keep its gun powder dry, when we get to the bridge, we will cross it. They said more than this in the 2006 poultry scam blackmail, despite that, I am the governor today.”

While noting that his reaction to the report was only “to fulfill all righteousness,” the governor said “those who arranged the dramatic and compromised return of Senator Obanikoro to Nigeria obviously did so in continuation of their project ‘Fayose must be implicated at all cost.”

He however said he was not bothered because his election was legitimately funded.

“As far as I am concerned, I am busy here in Ekiti attending to the welfare and well-being of my people. I won’t be distracted,” the governor said.

He said the EFCC should also beam its searchlights on the funding of APC elections.

“Since we are now in the era in which financial assistance from Nigerians to fund elections is being criminalised, the international community, especially those funding EFCC must insist that the commission probes the funding of APC elections before further funds are released to the commission,” he said.

FLASH: Former Minister Obanikoro, Has Been Arrested By The EFCC.

Former Nigeria Minister of State for Defense, Musiliu Obanikoro, who returned to Nigeria from the United States on Saturday, has been arrested by the EFCC.

Obanikoro, also a former ambassador to Ghana, fled Nigeria in 2015 after former President Goodluck Jonathan lost his bid for re-election.  He was smuggled into Nigeria with the help of some Nigerian government officials with whom he had engaged in a negotiation to turn himself in.  He had previously sworn not to return, implying he would be protected by the United States.

SaharaReporters sources say he is expected to remain in detention to face interrogation over allegations of corruption relating to bribery of army officers, electoral fraud and money laundering involving some N4.7billion that was taken from the office of the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Rtd. Col. Sambo Dasuki.  Mr. Dasuki is himself undergoing trial and is currently in detention.

Earlier today, Obanikoro flew to Abuja as early as 8:00 am but refused to show up at the EFCC headquarters as promised.  When it became clear that EFCC was going to declare him wanted, he finally arrived at its premises at about 1p.m. Nigerian time

An EFCC source told SaharaReporters that the former minister, who had on several occasions dismissed the work of the anti-graft agency, started making contacts about returning to the country when his daughter, Shalewa, was arrested and made some damning revelations about her father.

The source said Mr. Obanikoro confessed to officials involved in negotiating his return to taking money from the NSA to win the 2014 Ekiti State gubernatorial election at all cost for Ayodele Fayose, but conceded that only N800million made it into his private pockets.  He also revealed that out of the money allegedly from the NSA, N1.7million was given to former Senator Iyiola Omisore, while now-Governor Fayose stole the rest.

Since last week some of Obanikoro’s aides, including Kayode Bwalla, have stated to return to Nigeria but his two sons who were also involved in engaging in massive money laundering have not returned to Nigeria.

Obanikoro departed the US for the United Kingdom last week, first traveling to the Netherlands.  He then arrived in Lagos on Saturday evening and immediately went into hiding.

Accused of corruption, Obanikoro arrives Nigeria, to present self to EFCC.

A former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has arrived Nigeria in an apparent move to submit himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC

Mr. Obanikoro has been having a running battle with the anti-graft agency on allegations bordering on financial crimes.

He left for the United States shortly after his party lost the 2015 elections and he ceased being a minister.

The EFCC accused him of using his children to take out government contracts that were never executed.

Mr. Obanikoro, on a separate charge, was also implicated in the Ekiti elections scandal. It is not immediately clear if he was prepared to answer questions about that, too.

He had initially vowed not to return to the country alleging persecution by the government as a means to discredit him.

It is not immediately clear when he planned to submit himself to the EFCC, but Demola Olarewaju, an associate of the politician confirmed his arrival.

Mr. Olarewaju said Mr. Obanikoro had moved to Abuja from Lagos and could visit the EFCC headquarters on Monday.

Obanikoro’s Ex-Aide Reveals How He Helped Transport N4.7bn Election Funds

An officer of the Nigerian Navy, Lt.-Cdr Olumide Adewale, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that he helped his former boss, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, to transport money, which was flown to Akure and later handed over to Abiodun Agbele on the instructions of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

Adewale, who was the Aide-de-Camp to Obanikoro when the latter was the Minister of State for Defence, said this on Wednesday when he was grilled by detectives of the EFCC.

According to the anti-graft agency, the money was part of the N4.7bn that was paid into Obanikoro’s sons’ company account, Sylvan McNamara, on the instructions of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Adewale, who was in charge of Obanikoro’s security for about a year, told the EFCC that everything he did was under the strict instructions of his boss.

He told investigators that on June 16, 2014, barely a week to the Ekiti State governorship election, he, alongside Obanikoro, departed the ex-minister’s Park View home in Ikoyi, Lagos, and headed for the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The naval officer told detectives that on getting to the airport, he met Obanikoro’s son, Gbolahan. He said Gbolahan and the former minister had a brief meeting after which a bullion van arrived at the private wing of the airport.

Adewale told the EFCC operatives that Gbolahan then directed some men at the airport to offload the money from the bullion van and load it unto the aircraft.

The entire activity was said to have been captured on CCTV.

A detective of the anti-graft agency quoted Adewale as saying, “The flight was delayed for about an hour. Later, a bullion van pulled into the hangar where the chartered flight was. Shortly after, Gbolahan ensured that some bags were offloaded unto the plane. I later boarded the flight with Obanikoro and his friend, Dr. Tunde Oshinowo (a PDP chieftain and a mutual friend of Obanikoro and Fayose).”

The EFCC detectives said that on getting to the Akure airport, Obanikoro was welcomed by Mr. Abiodun Agbele, Fayose’s ally, who had since been arrested by the commission.

Adewale confirmed that Obanikoro was welcomed at the airport by a politician.

He told investigators that he did not know the name of the person but could recognise the person.

The naval man was further quoted as saying, “On arrival at Akure, the minister had a discussion with political friends. A bullion van was driven to the tarmac. The bags were offloaded unto the bullion van and the minister directed that we escort the van to a Zenith Bank branch in Akure.

“On arrival, the bags were offloaded by bank workers under the supervision of a civilian who had come to meet the minister at the Akure airport. I don’t know the man facially but I can recognise him.”

Meanwhile, Fayose has said the EFCC is on a wild goose chase in Ekiti State.

The governor stated that the anti-corruption commission had shifted attention to the finances of Ekiti State after what he claimed to be the failure of the commission to link him with the diversion of arms funds at the NSA’s office under Dasuki.

Fayose, who spoke on Orange FM station in Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday, said the EFCC had started harassing banks in Ekiti State, seeking for records of government finances, on allegations that the contractors gave him (governor) kickbacks.

“They are on vendetta mission. They said I collected money from Dasuki and I have told them that I did not collect a dime from Dasuki. I have N300m in my fixed deposit account in Zenith Bank and I declared it in my Asset Declaration Form.

“I have challenged them to publish the statement made to the EFCC by Dasuki where he said he gave Senator Musiliu Obanikoro money to give me or where Obanikoro himself said he gave me money.’’

Fayose called for proper restructuring of the country in line with the report of the 2014 National Conference.

“Nigeria has not been properly structured and that’s why we are facing all these problems. Remember it was those in power now that clamoured for restructuring when they were in opposition. Now that they have the federal powers and they are using the powers to oppress the people, they are against the restructuring of Nigeria,” he said.

Obanikoro Addresses $2.1bn Arms Deal Allegation, Welcomes Extradition Process

Following the raid by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the Ikoyi, Lagos, residence of former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, last Tuesday, the former minister has dismissed the allegations of his involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deal, adding that they were based solely on rumours.

Obanikoro who had earlier responded to the raid by the commission, during which his cars and valuables were carted away by the agency, through his media aide Jonathan Eze, however decided to address the incident himself.

In a series of posts on his Facebook page yesterday, he said the raid by the EFCC was based purely on rumours of his supposed involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deal and the National Security Adviser’s imprest account.
He said: “Suggestions of an EFCC investigation have dwelt solely in the realm of rumour, over which I have sued several media organisations.

“The rumour before was that of the $2.7 billion (sic) arms issue, now they say it is NSA imprest account. Let them make the documents public.

“EFCC has never officially made public any investigation of my record in government at any time before this illegal invasion of my house.”

While stressing that the rumours of a plan to extradite him from the United States were lies, he however said he would welcome an extradition process, as it would expose government’s shenanigans.

“Rumours of extradition are also lies. False allegations cannot stand up to any decent legal inquiry in a civilised system such as in the US.

“The allegations are lies, not backed by fact or evidence but a burning desire to obliterate the opposition and keep Nigerians distracted.

“The illegal invasion of my house and @realFFK (Femi Fani Kayode) and several others in detention, gives me no confidence in government’s willingness to do justice,” Obanikoro stated.

He added: “I welcome an extradition process as it will expose the shenanigans going on with their fraudulently fictitious fight against ‘corruption’.

“Since EFCC opted to make this a media trial/circus, let them make public any document linking me or any of my children to any financial scam.”
“I cannot submit myself to such a glaring witch hunt, injustice and charade; but I will fight it legally with God and a clear conscience on my side.”

Condemning the raid on his home during the Ramadam fast, he said: “To put one’s family and dependents through such trauma of illegal invasion, in this holy month of Ramadan is an unfair reward for service.

“I put close to two decades into public service, in opposition and in government, all with an unblemished record and a clear conscience.

“The aim of government is to distract the people from their woes. Such tactics have been tried before, in Nigeria and elsewhere, they failed.

“If hounding Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members will solve Nigeria’s economic woes then we welcome it. This is a rather woeful attempt to distract from those woes.

“If the harassment of PDP members will help government to deliver good governance, many of us would submit ourselves willingly to martyrdom.

“But unfortunately, harassing PDP leaders is not in any way equal to the delivery of good governance, no matter who applauds such illegality.

“The illegal invasion without EFCC invitation, notice of investigation or a court order is also a mockery of the intelligence of Nigerians.

“The illegal invasion and raid is a mockery of justice, an expression of disdain towards the judicial system and a terribly bad precedence
“Such invasion and raid of my house without prior invitation from EFCC to me or any court order towards this, signals a return to despotism.

“Furthermore, no court ordered a raid on my house or seizure of my belongings. Any such move is illegal and will be fought against legally.

“Let me reiterate clearly; I have never received any invitation from EFCC over any issue up till date. This invasion therefore is premature.

“In 16 years of democracy, we thought we had conquered despotism for good in Nigeria but in one year, this government has brought it back.

“The invasion and raid of my residence yesterday (Tuesday) by agents of the state is a sad throwback to a tyrannical past that is better forgotten.”

While addressing Nigerians, he said: “Nigerians must remain steadfast in condemning the nepotism like ethnic divisions and economic illiteracy that have characterised this government.
“Pursuing Obanikoro, hounding (Alison) Madueke, detaining FFK and (Sambo) Dasuki will not distract the people from the failure of government to deliver on its own promises.

“This is a government determined to outdo the abysmal and ignominious economic records of December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985 that ended in shame.

“This is a government that promotes ethnic divisions, distracts from issues, political persecution and official gangsterism from high places.

“I also remain unshaken in my belief that truth will prevail over falsehood, as ever before, no matter how exciting the falsehood may sound.

“I remain confident in my ultimate vindication and urge EFCC to make public any investigation so far conducted without any invitation to me.

“I commit myself, my family, my allies, and my friends into the hands of the Almighty God to whom all of us will give account one day.”

Obanikoro Responds To EFCC Probe Of Sons Over Alleged N4.8billion Fraudulent Payment

The immediate past Minister of State, Foreign Affairs Musiliu Obanikoro has challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to sincerely publish the names of the directors and signatories to the Sylvan McNamara Limited account that allegedly received N4.8billion from the office of the National Security Adviser.

In a statement circulated on his behalf by his media aide, Jonathan Eze, Mr. Obanikoro said the EFCC should provide details of the real signatories to the account “as at when the said money was paid instead of demonising and deceiving Nigerians with vague, contrived and distorted information”.

“Obanikoro is appalled by the public political persecution embarked upon by these agencies noting that there is nowhere in the world where investigations are being conducted using the pages of the newspapers,” the statement said.

The former minister also “queried the wisdom and logic of bandying figures and associating same with his sons who are thorough bred professionals in their own rights reminding them that the court of law is and remains the judicial institution for trying cases and not whipping sentiments in order to give the dog a bad name and hang it.”

Saying he served the nation in various capacities with enviable and untainted records of public service, Mr. Obanikoro urged the EFCC to be straight and above board in its investigations and avoid speculations and conjectures that are infringing on the fundamental human rights of his sons.

The statement reads in parts, “Associating my sons to the Sylvan McNamara account that allegedly received funds from the office of the embattled National security Adviser is highly preposterous and unthinkable.

“I am particularly amazed by the fact that trials and investigations are being done using the media unconventionally just to satisfy the cravings of political entities who are desperate to rub my hard earned reputation in the mud.

“I am using this medium to challenge … the EFCC to publish in good conscience the signatories and the names of the directors of the said company and to restate that I shall conclusively pursue this injustice and infringements to a logical end.”

Obanikoro Fingered In Plot To Remove PDP Chairman

Embattled Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Tunji Shelle has accused the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Musiliu Obanikoro of being the brain behind his purported removal by some party members.

He noted that Obanikoro has not forgiven him since he rejected the planned rigging of the party’s primaries in favour of Obanikoro.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Lagos alongside other members of the state executive, Shelle said efforts were made to rig the primaries in Obanikoro’s favour but he stood his ground to prevent the illegalities.

He noted that Obanikoro has not put his defeat at the primaries behind him and his hell bent on removing him from office.

He described his purported removal from office as illegal and promised that necessary disciplinary action will be taken against those involved.

34 members of the party’s executive led by the state secretary,Wahab Owokoniran, had on Monday removed Shelle and consequently appointed the party’s vice-chairman, Owolabi Olohunoje, as his replacement.

The federal government has denied “recalling” its envoys in South Africa. The government  clarified the decision to “invite” its Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Martin Cobham, and Deputy, Uche Ajulu-okeke.

Speaking on the current diplomatic row between the two countries, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, said the envoy was not recalled but summoned for consultation. “Please disregard rumours and reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recalled its High Commissioner to South Africa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa for consultation. He was not recalled,” Obanikoro said.

The Senate last week called on the Federal Government to recall the Nigeria High Commissioner to South Africa for proper consultation on the recent incidence of xenophobic attacks. The South Africa government had expressed “regret” at the decision.

At least seven people have been killed during the attack on foreign nationals. None were Nigerian but a number of these were said to have been rendered homeless.

Obanikoro Summons SA’s High Commissioner Over Xenophobic Attacks

Nigeria has complained to South Africa about a wave of attacks targeting foreigners and called on Pretoria to punish the culprits and compensate the victims, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday. Junior foreign minister Musiliu Obanikoro summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner Lulu Mnguni “to register Nigeria’s protest over the ongoing xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans in South Africa”.

“In the meeting, ambassador Obanikoro condemned the attacks on foreigners in South Africa, expressing concern on the fate of Nigerians and indeed of other nationals who are migrants in the country,” said a statement from his office.

South Africa needed to take “concrete steps to quell the unrest and bring the culprits involved to book” to act as a deterrent and prevent further violence, the statement added. “He also called on the South African authorities to compensate the victims of these attacks,” the ministry said. Soldiers were deployed overnight to tackle gangs hunting down and killing foreigners after at least seven people died in violence in the last few weeks. On Wednesday, police said 11 men were arrested in a raid in Johannesburg.

I Will Not Congratulate Wike, Amaechi To Obanikoro

Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that he will never accept the electoral victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, stressing that the election was a daylight robbery.

He was reacting to the call by the Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, that Amaechi and All Progressives Congress in Rivers state should concede defeat and congratulate the winner in the interest of the state.

Amaechi took to Twitter to reply Obanikoro.

“Because of the larger interest of Rivers state, I and most Rivers people will not accept that daylight robbery they called elections. The election was a sham, a disgrace, an affront on democracy. Please read the reports of EU and other INEC accredited election observers before you open your mouth to spew rubbish. If your values are so debased and rotten that you saw nothing wrong with the elections in Rivers State, mine is not. Never will.”

Ekiti Saga: Pressure Forces Jonathan To Give Obanikoro A Poor Ministerial Position

President Goodluck Jonathan assigned ministerial nominees to their portfolios, dumping Musiliu Obanikoro, the shady former Minister of State for Defense, in an “insignificant” ministerial position.

Jonathan unveiled the ministerial deployments at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja on Wednesday. Obanikoro was named as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, a position starkly lower in prestige than his former position as minister of state for defense.

Several civil society groups, columnists and opposition senators had opposed Obanikoro’s nomination on account of his involvement in an illegal scheme to use the military to rig last year’s governorship election in Ekiti State.
Sahara Reporters had obtained an audiotape where Obanikoro and some PDP men ordered Brigadier General A.A. Momoh to have his troops detain supporters of then incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi in order to boost the electoral prospects of the PDP’s governorship candidate, Ayo Fayose.

Despite the widespread opposition to Mr. Obanikoro’s confirmation, Senate President David Mark wangled a senatorial clearance for the former junior rank Defense minister. Mr. Obanikoro’s senate clearance was stalled twice, before Mr. Mark used underhanded tactics to get him approved. Most opposition senators walked out of the chambers to protest what one of them termed “the Senate president’s act of bad faith.”

A source at the Presidency told Sahara Reporters that President Jonathan was so shaken by the widespread and strong opposition to his nomination of Obanikoro as a minister that he decided to assign the controversial former minister to one of the most obscure cabinet posts. “Even PDP stakeholders in Lagos and the southwest were against Musiliu Obanikoro,” the source disclosed.

During his stint as junior Defense minister, Obanikoro had access to a full range of military arsenal, which included naval choppers that ferried him around Lagos whenever he visited the state.

Obanikoro’s new humiliating post is equivalent to an ambassadorship, a source within the cabinet said.

We Complied With Our Legislative Procedures For Ministerial Screening – David Mark

The Senate president, David Mark, has stated in strong terms that the Upper House complied with all the legislative  practices and procedures in the confirmation of all the ministerial nominees that appeared before the Senate.
This is coming on the heels of the screening of former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, last week in the Upper House which generated controversy.
The Senate president has come under knocks from some quarters as it was alleged that he put party interest over national interest.
A statement issued by his special adviser, Media, Kola Ologbondiyan, said, “The attention of the office of the President of the Senate has been drawn to the needless controversies concerning the screening of ministerial nominees on the floor of the Senate with particular reference to the confirmation of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
“We will like to state without any form of ambiguity that the president of the Senate complied with all the legislative practices and procedures in the confirmation of all the ministerial nominees that appeared before the Senate.”
“It is strange that those who hold contrary views have laid claims to the tradition of the Senate that where three senators are opposed to a nominee, such a nominee is automatically disqualified and cannot be confirmed by the Senate. This is misplaced”.
He further explained that the Senate found itself in a situation where two of its traditions were in conflict, adding that the Senate president took the option available in such cases by putting the question through a voice vote.

Obanikoro: David Mark Betrayed Us – Dr. Bukola Saraki

The chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has declared that the Senate president, David Mark, betrayed the All Progressives Congress (APC) senators when he decided to go ahead with the confirmation of Musiliu Obanikoro as a minister.

Saraki during an interview with newsmen in Ilorin yesterday, the senator claimed that Mark reneged on an earlier agreement he had with other lawmakers on the confirmation of Obanikoro.

According to the former governor of Kwara State, senators had, during an executive session, agreed to defer the issue of Obanikoro to allow concerned senators, particularly in the APC, to reach an amicable solution on the controversies that surrounded the then nominee.

He said APC senators had arrived the chamber last week with that agreement in mind and therefore were disappointed that the Senate president went straight to the confirmation stage for Obanikoro instead of making room for reviewing the opposition against the nomination.

He defended the decision of his colleagues to walk out on the confirmation, saying it was an attempt to protest what was considered as wrong for the sake of posterity.

“Well, I think what happened was unfortunate. I believe that in the Senate, the National Assembly, there are many courts- the court of the law and the court of public opinion and we all represent constituencies.

“I believe in a scenario where the three senators, it has always been the practice, have an objection to the candidate and I believe we are all there because we represent the people. We are not there on our own. We must be concerned with that.

“At the same time, I agree that somebody is innocent until proven guilty. But I believe the right thing the Senate president should have done is, we should have tarried a bit and we should not rush on the issue.

“I remember a week ago, after coming out of the executive session, we agreed then that we will only take the first four nominees and that we would give one week for further consultation and then we would come back and review. The only person we are reviewing is Senator Obanikoro.

APC Lawmakers Oppose Obanikoro’s Ministerial Screening

Eighteen senators of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday opposed the nomination of Musiliu Obanikoro by President Goodluck Jonathan for a ministerial position.

The lawmakers cited Mr. Obanikoro’s alleged involvement in the rigging of the Ekiti elections as a reason for their decision.

The APC senators led by minority leader, George Akume, alongside Sani Saleh representing Kaduna central; Ojudu Babafemi representing Ekiti central senatorial district and Danjuma Goje representing Gombe central, disclosed their stand to journalists on Thursday.

“Obanikoro is not qualified to hold public office based on his antecedent,” Mr. Babafemi said. “It is our position that such a person is not qualified to hold public office and we are going to oppose that.

Ekiti Rigging Tape: Soyinka Demands Probe of Fayose, Obanikoro, Omisore, Others

Wole Soyinka, has demanded investigation into the Ekiti rigging audio, which appears to show how the military hierarchy and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, including Governor Ayo Fayose, planned the rigging of the June 21, 2014 governorship election in the state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Soyinka asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to work with the international community to conduct the investigation and make the findings of the exercise known to save Nigeria’s democracy.

He said brushing the issue aside as just electoral malpractice approaches criminal subversion and treason. Mr. Fayose defeated the All Progressive Congress candidate and then governor, Kayode Fayemi, in the election.

Court Reserves Judgment On Obanikoro’s Eligibility

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has slated March 5, 2015, for judgment in a suit seeking to stop a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, from ever contesting for any electoral office in Nigeria.

Among the allegations levelled against the ex-minister was that he had at one time or the other falsified his age and had submitted a forged birth certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the purpose of contesting governorship election in Lagos State.

Obanikoro’s accusers also asked the court to determine whether he was still eligible to contest any election in Nigeria having “voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America in addition to the citizenship of Nigeria.”

The action was instituted shortly before the Lagos Peoples Democracy Party’s primary which held on December 8, last year.

The three plaintiffs in the suit are members of the PDP, namely: Micheal Ogun, Suleiman Saheed and Wasiu Odusan.

Apart from their originating summons, they had also filed an ex parte application, wherein they urged Justice Kazeem Alogba to stop Obanikoro from standing for the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State.

The judge, however, declined to stop Obanikoro from participating in the said primary, wherein Mr. Jimi Agbaje was eventually declared winner.

The lawyer for the plaintiffs, Mr. Wahab Shittu, had vehemently argued that the matter was one that bordered on constitutional infringement.

He added that whatever judgment arrived at by the court would become an important reference point on the nation’s political landscape.

“A democracy is principally founded on the rule of law. At all times there are two choices to make, whether you want to be guided by the rule of law or by the culture of impunity. Your Lordship will decide this issue for history and for posterity,” Shittu said.

Obanikoro Confesses Participation in Ekiti Poll Rigging Meeting

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has admitted that there was indeed a meeting between himself, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekit State, General A.A. Momoh, Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan and some top officials of the People Democratic Party on how to rig the June 21 governorship election in favour of Fayose.

Obanikoro confessed to some senators that he did participate in the meeting on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan. Obanikoro’s confession is part of the move to lobby the Senate to give him a pass during his upcoming nomination hearing.

Prior to admitting his involvement to the Senators,  he had met with President Jonathan to discuss the tape and his role in the whole saga. Obanikoro had in the past vehemently denied his involvement in any meeting to help Fayose win the election.

APC Mocks Obanikoro’s Ministerial Nomination

Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr Joe Igbokwe, questioned the rationale behind the nomination of Senator Musliu Obanikoro, wondering what value the President was expecting from minister who recently resigned from the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

The party added that recycling people will certainly not take the nation to greater heights. The party said: “Is Musiliu the only Lagosian qualified to serve in the Federal Executive Council? As a minister, Obanikoro recently left the Jonathan cabinet to pursue a failed governorship ambition.

“Why is it that the President has turned the FEC to a games’ room and not for serious-minded personalities? Is the nomination Jonathan’s way of placating the former minister, who lost the PDP governorship ticket in primary that returned more ballot than the number of accredited delegates?

Stop Your Verbal Attacks On Me – Bode George Warns Obanikoro

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George, has called  for an end to verbal attacks by Obanikoro.

George: Soon, FG will resolve Diya, others’ rights issue

The statement reads; ‘’One has refrained from engaging Senator Musiliu Obanikoro despite his gross and alarmist provocations. I have deliberately remained distant and quiet, ignoring the stark obscenities of a desperate and obsessed man who is apparently incapable of absorbing the reality of his defeat by a well-bred and better man.

‘’For Obanikoro to claim in sheer ludicrousness that I, even remotely, identify with any intimations of violence is utter lunacy and blind, vindictive madness. Surely, Obanikoro is possessed and obsessed. He needs immediate psychiatric treatment. He is a desperate sinking man, grasping and thrashing in self inflicted chasm.

‘’ What is the pedigree of this young man who has abandoned the typical African deference to Elders? We know who sprung from violence and banditry. We know whose antecedents reek in noisome, vagrant, untidy ruffianism.

‘’ Politics is not a do or die affair. No civilized person with impeccable pedigree will seek a tacky refuge in destruction and ruin simply because he has lost in a free and fair contest. Obanikoro should go quietly into that good night if he means well for Lagos.

‘’ Enough of his desperate tantrums.

Lagos PDP Governorship Primaries Should Be Cancelled – Obanikoro

A governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has called for the cancellation of the Lagos State governorship primaries calling it a sham.

At the governorship primaries which was held at Yard 158, Oregun Road, Lagos, Jimi Agbaje polled 432 votes to defeat Obanikoro who scored 343 votes, while Adedeji Doherty and Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi polled 21 votes respectively.

Addressing newsmen at his GRA office shortly after the primaries, Obanikoro said “There is no election results and the elections should be cancelled. The process is completely tainted and going forward with that, will lead to an outcome that will not be beneficial to the party.”

Jimi-PDP

Asked to comment on the outcome of the exercise that threw up Mr Jimi Agbaje, he said “my immediate reaction is t’hat the election was a sham. I still cannot comprehend how accredited delegates of 806, will turn out to be 868. To be honest with you, you can tell that it was a predetermined exercise. People like us are not in this democracy for the sake of it, we are in it to ensure that the right things are done so that the country can be on the right path. We intend to fight this, there is an opportunity for an appeal and we will appeal and we hope the party will do the right thing.”

Accusing Chief Bode George of being responsible for the alleged confusion within the Lagos PDP, he said “Bode George has been the problem as far as this party is concerned and there is no doubt in my mind that he supervised this electoral malpractice. How do you expect the panel chairman arriving Lagos at 10 am on Monday and not starting the election until 5pm in the evening. You can judge by some of the pronouncements made by Bode George, Ogunlewe and a host of others. One of the reasons why this party has failed is because it is being led by the likes of Bode George and Ogunlewe.”

The former Minister of State for Defence, who vowed not to rest until justice is served said “We submitted ourselves to a process that we felt will be free and fair but unfortunately, they decided to play religious politics, manipulation of electoral process particularly on Election Day. This to me is unacceptable, we will contest it in every sense of it and until the needed necessary corrections are made, we will not rest.”

Obanikoro Declares, Vows To Establish A Greater Lagos

Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro , on Tuesday formally declared his intention to contest for the Lagos State governorship seat in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a resolve to build a popular government, if elected.

Obanikoro, at the declaration tagged “Walk with Me,” held at the National Stadium, Lagos, commended the ingenuity of Governor Babatunde Fashola for running the affairs of the state despite the domineering tendencies of former Governor Bola Tinubu.

While berating the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state for running elitist programmes and ostracising the poor from its scheme of development, he vowed to upgrade infrastructures in the rural areas.

His words: “We have seen billions spent on sand-filling our waters, we have seen billions spent in repairing Bourdillon road and I believe it is time for a new change. I believe it is time for government to spend billions on upgrading infrastructures in Alimosho, in Shomolu, Kosofe and other parts.

“A greater Lagos is where hard working families can be successful in Lagos and where the down-trodden will benefit from government. We must all stand together to ensure that we have a new and better Lagos. A new Lagos, where the masses of the state will not be left out. That is the kind of Lagos that I offer in 2015.

“The more I look, I less I see. Any system that takes from the poor to benefit the rich, that system cannot be working for us.”

Highlighting some of his plans, if elected as governor, the former envoy said, “The Obanikoro administration will create a malaria centre across the 20 local government areas of the state; we will ensure our schools stand with others.

“Because every business transaction must factor the emperor of Bourdillon into it, that has become a burden on our families. I stand here promising Lagosians that the burden brought upon them in the last 15 years by Alpha Beta, will come to an end in May 2015.
