Kidnapped UNIPORT Lecturer Gains Freedom

Dr Reginald Ohiri, a lecturer in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Port Harcourt, who was abducted on Monday, has regained his freedom. The kidnappers released him on Tuesday night when they discovered that he was not their target.

 
Spokesperson for UNIPORT, Dr. William Wodi, said not only has the lecturer regained his freedom but he has also reported to school. There was however no confirmation on whether ransom was paid. Dr Ohiri just informed him that it was a case of mistaken identity and the kidnappers allowed him to go.

 

The Change We Promised Nigerians Is Already Manifesting – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said the change promised Nigerians by is now manifesting itself. Speaking in Enugu at a town hall meeting for the South East organised by the ministry on Monday, the minister said

“Many have said they are yet to see the change we promised. Many more have called the promise a ruse,”“In fact, they are now mocking us. But we remain undaunted because we know that the change we promised is real. “In fact, the change we promised is already here, and it is manifesting all around us,’’ he said.“ Before now, public officials simply opened the public till, took as much money as they wanted and walked away without consequences.

 “That explains why funds allocated to the military to fight Boko Haram ended up in the piggy banks of many unscrupulous Nigerians. “Today, all those who looted the public treasury are being made to answer for their actions, as impunity gives way to accountability. “Many have offered to return their loots, and many more are facing charges,”

APC Summons Abdulmumin Jibrin Over His Allegations Of Budget Padding Against Speaker Dogara And Others

The National Leadership of APC yesterday wrote a letter to embattled former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, summoning him to appear before it at the National Secretariat of the party today August 2nd.
Jibrin has continued his media campaign against the House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, three principal officers and nine other lawmakers, accusing them of budget padding and corruption.

In a letter signed by the party’s Deputy National Chairman for the Northern Zone, Lawal Shuaibu, APC said it is totally unacceptable for Jibrin to have resorted to media war against its party members

when he had not exhausted the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanism.

“As a disciplined party, the constitution of our party has made adequate provisions on ways of resolving any issue among our members. It behoves on the party to take all necessary steps in order to ensure that no member of the Family brings dishonour to the party. To say the least, it is absolutely unacceptable to resort to media war as a means of settling scores without recourse to and/or exhausting the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanism. You are, therefore, by this invitation, expected to appear before the undersigned at the APC National Secretariat on Tuesday, 2nd August, 2016, at 2 p.m. Kindly note that failure to and/or refusal to honour this invitation will amount to a decision you have made not to submit to the party” ?the letter read

 

Lagos State Gov. Ambode Leads Top Performing Governor’s List

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode is leading other Governors in the ongoing poll organised by the African Leadership Magazine to determine Nigeria’s top performing Governor.

The poll, tagged ‘Good Governance Polls for Nigeria’s Top Performing Governor’ started two weeks ago with Governor Ambode maintaining the lead with increased 36.1 percent of the total vote casts, while Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State closely trailed with 25 percent

According to its organisers, the Poll was designed by the group as part of its strategic engagement tool to monitor performance and gauge the mood of the electorates in Nigeria in line with its objective of providing credible information and support to leaders in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Governor, Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State sits in the third position with 8.8 percent, while Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is in the fourth position with 7.9 percent of the total vote casts.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai sits in the fifth position with 5 percent, while as at press time, voting is still ongoing and is expected to close in the next four days.

‘I Will Not Step Down For Bode George’ – AIT Boss Says

The chairman of the Africa Independent Television (AIT), Chief Raymond Dokpesi has said he will not step down for anyone.

Dokpesi is in the race to become the chairman of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The AIT boss, in a meeting with members of the party in Ekiti state, said he will not step down for Chief Bode George.

Dokpesi also said George is part of the old school, adding that it is time for youths to take over the affairs of the PDP.

According to the AIT boss’ media team, “High Chief Dokpesi is busy meeting the delegates and outlining his programmes for the reformation and rebuilding of the PDP. He is not considering stepping down for anyone as he is widely accepted by delegates across the country. He remains the candidate to beat.

” As at noon of Saturday, 30th July, we have visited all the states in the Southern region, except Ekiti, which we are heading to now. We will be meeting delegates from the Northern region as from Sunday so High Chief Dokpesi is committed to the campaign and he is confident that he will win by the grace of God and the support of the delegates.”

Chief Raymond Dokpesi was arrested for allegedly receiving funds meant for the purchase of arms from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.

Militants Threaten To Declare Niger Delta Republic Today, Military On High Alert

Ijaw Militant group, the Adaka Boro Avengers (ABA), have threatened to declare the independent Republic of Niger Delta today August 1st. The group in a statement released last week, said after holding consultation with other militant groups in the region, they have concluded arrangements to declare the Niger Delta region as an independent republic from today August 1.

The group in the statement signed by its spokesperson, Edmos Ayayeibo, ordered people from other regions who are residing in Niger Delta to vacate their homes before today

“If they refuse to heed to our warning, we will use so many as example in the Niger Delta region on the due date.”

Reacting to the threat, the Nigerian military through the Joint Task Force Commander in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, dismissed the threat of the group, saying the military would not fail to fulfill their responsibility to protect lives, property and the territorial integrity of the country. He asked the people of the region to go about their normal duties.

“This is to reassure the good people of the Niger Delta that Operation Delta Safe is firmly on the ground to protect them” he said.

National Theatre In Darkness For Unpaid N9M Debt

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDC) yesterday said electricity supply to the National Arts Theatre in Lagos was disconnected because its management was owing over N9 million debt.

Mr Idemudia Godwin, general manager, Media Communications of EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the complex was disconnected after appeals and demand notices went unheeded.

According to him, the debt is an accumulation of unpaid bills over time.

“We don’t disconnect without serving notice.

3,000 Displaced As Busi Communities Clash In Cross River

OVER three thousand persons in Busi 4, one of the communities at the base of the famous Obudu Ranch Resort in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State, have been displaced following a communal conflict, weekend. Sources in the area confirmed that five of the Busi communities, Busi 1, Busi 2, Busi 3, Busi 5 and Busi 6, allegedly joined forces to attack Busi 4, following a dispute over a parcel of farmland.

A visit by Vanguard to the conflict area, located over four hundred kilometres away from Calabar, showed that several houses in Busi 4 were set ablaze, farmlands and water sources destroyed, while the villagers have escaped to the divisional police headquarters and the council headquarters at Sankwala, for refuge. A community leader in Busi 4, Mr. Emmanuel Okobere, said: “Neighbouring communities of Busi 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 invaded us in a protracted dispute over a parcel of land, which has spanned several years. “We got court judgement in our favour five times, which they refused to accept.”

A youth leader in the community, Mr. Francis Obi, said the invaders attacked their community on Friday evening, taking them unawares. He said: “We were preparing to go to bed when all of a sudden, we started hearing gunshots, which caused panic in the community as our people started running and those who could not run fast enough were killed and our houses set ablaze.” Mr. John Inaku, Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, attributed the crisis to lack of patience and understanding among communities and condemned the act as barbaric and unnecessary. “These villages are always in a hurry to engage in the use of violence to settle land disputes, even when government is taking measures to settle the situation amicably,” he added
