Emulate Nelson Mandela Drop Your Second Term Ambition – Oshiomole Tells Jonathan

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Friday, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to drop his second term ambition and follow in the footsteps of the late President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. This, he said, will earn him the respect of all Nigerians and Africans in general.

Oshiomole said this in Benin City, during a visit by residents and various associations in Egor Local Government Area to thank the Governor for the construction and dualisation of the Upper Siluko road in the state capital.

“Like in the PDP jingle, the PDP says our President is like Nelson Mandela; it was not easy, but he did it. Then they talked of Martin Luther King, it was not easy but he did it, but they didn’t know Martin Luther was never president. Then they made another grammatical error, where they said for Obama it wasn’t easy but he did it. I say it’s a grammatical error because President Obama is not in the past, he is in the present and he is doing it.

“So how many terms did Nelson Mandela spend as president? Is there any black man who does not respect Mandela? Dead or alive, Mandela is respected. He is respected in America more than they respect American president. He is respected in Europe more than they respect any European President.

“It is not how many years you spend there, it is what you did during your period. In Edo State, PDP did 10 years. We in APC have only done 6 years. In those 10 years, PDP did not do your road, they blamed it on Water Goddess (Mammy water), but you have come to thank us for using APC bulldozers to chase away the mammy water and now we are constructing the road,” Oshiomole said.

According to him, the people have the power to send the president and the PDP packing on March 28 with the PVC by voting for General Muhammadu Buhari and other All Progressives Congress candidates. He urged them to do so.

“I urge you to use your PVC on March 28th and April 11th to punish PDP and send them packing.”

Oshiomole also called on the people to shun campaigns which tend to divide the people along religious or tribal lines.

“Anyone who collects money to preach hatred to the people will receive the wrath of God. Anybody who does not want Nigeria to conduct peaceful elections or who knows the truth but collects money to lie and deceive the people of God will receive the Judgment of God.

“In Edo State, religion is not a problem. Let them not deceive us at all, this matter is about truth. 16 years ago, N75 was equivalent to $1 but today, it is N230 to one dollar. The hike in the value of the dollar against the naira will have spiral effect on the economy. If the dollar goes up, it affects all other segments of the economy. Prices of other products will go up,” the governor said.

South Africans Remember Madiba On One Year Anniversary #Mandela

South Africans have started marking the first anniversary of the death of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who died last year at the age of 95.

Official ceremonies to mark the passing of the former South African leader will include an interfaith prayer service early on Friday, followed by a wreath-laying commemoration by veterans of the anti-apartheid struggle, as well as a cricket match.

Bells, hooters, and traditional horns called vuvuzelas, will be sounded for three minutes and seven seconds, followed by three minutes of silence, combined to equal a six-minute and seven-second ceremony designed to symbolise Mandela’s 67 years of public service.

Many other events are due to take place over the weekend and beyond, including widespread artistic performances, as a way of remembering and celebrating the former president who led the country out of the apartheid era after enduring 27 years in prison.

Fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu called on South Africans to emulate Mandela’s example in a statement to mark the anniversary.

“Our obligation to Madiba is to continue to build the society he envisaged, to follow his example,” Tutu said, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Mandela’s Widow says Heart ‘Heavier’ as Anniversary Approaches

As the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death approaches, his widow Graca Machel said on Tuesday that her heart was growing heavier and that it was still difficult to accept he is gone.

The South African anti-apartheid icon died last December 5 at the age of 95 after a lengthy battle with illness.

“The more we approach the month of December, my heart is getting heavier and heavier,” said Mozambique-born Machel.

“It is still too early to live with the reality that Madiba is no more,” she said referring to the Nobel Peace prize winner by his clan name.

Mandela’s death prompted a week of national mourning in the country he led from the darkness of apartheid to democratic majority rule.

Plans are underway for state events to mark the anniversary of his death.

Machel was speaking at the launch of a Mandela Remembrance Walk that will take place on December 13 in the capital Pretoria.

She said it was important to keep his memory alive for future generations and remind them “there was a time where we had leaders, a collective leadership which went ahead and mobilised all of us… when it comes to fight for freedom.”

South Africa has struggled since Mandela remade his “Rainbow Nation”, battling high unemployment, poor governance as well as endemic crime and poverty.
