Only Labour Party Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege decamps to APC.

The only Nigerian Senator elected on the platform of the Labour Party, Ovie Omo-Agege, has decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mr. Omo-Agege, representing Delta Central, announced his defection on Tuesday, citing leadership crisis in LP.

He came to the Senate after his predecessor, Igboyata Amori of Peoples Democratic Party, was sacked by the court.

Mr. Omo-Agege, a native Urhobo, had openly romanced with the APC caucus before his formal defection today, Tuesday.

In one instance, he joined the APC caucus last year to counter the PDP caucus’ accusation that the anti-graft campaign of the Buhari administration was lopsided.

With his defection, APC now has 66 members in the Senate, after gaining for decampees from the PDP previously.

Joshua Dariye, Plateau; Yele Omogunwa, Ondo; Nelson Effiong, Akwa Ibom; and Andy Uba, Anambra are the four Senators who cross-carpeted from the PDP to the APC.

Tribunal Upholds Adeyemi’s Victory, Dismisses Labour Party’s Petition

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Ibadan on Wednesday upheld the election of Rep. Akeem Adeyemi representing Oyo East, Oyo West, Atiba and Afijio Federal Constituency.

Kamil Akinlabi of Labour Party had challenged the declaration of Adeyemi of APC as the winner of the March 28 election.
Also joined in the petition were the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The petitioner had informed the tribunal through his counsel, Mr R. Akinloye, that Adeyemi was not duly elected by the majority of lawful votes cast, adding that the election was marred by irregularities and malpractices.

Akinloye also said that Adeyemi did not have National Youth Service Corps certificate and prayed the court to declare his client as the winner of the election or order re-run in the affected local governments.

Labour Party Slams Buhari Over Age Comment

One of the opposition parties in the country, the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday expressed its disappointment over President Muhammadu Buhari’s comment that there is a limit to what he could do as President at the age of 72.

The party described Buhari’s statement just few days after assuming office as embarrassing. The party’s National Chairman, Abdukadir Abdulsalam, noted that Buhari deceived Nigerians during the presidential campaign by claiming to have the ability and agility to carry out the function of state as President of the country.

The party urged Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to come out clean on the true health status of the President.

Ladoja Challenges Ajimobi’s Victory, Heads To Tribunal

Senator Rasheed Ladoja, former governor of Oyo state and gubernatorial candidate of Accord Party in the last governorship election has began legal proceedings to challenge the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of All Progressive Party (APC) at a tribunal to be inaugurated soon.

Investigation revealed that as at the time of filing this report, only Senator Ladoja has submitted a petition against Ajimobi at the governorship tribunal while the three other candidates, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala of Labour Party (LP), Senator Teslim Folarin of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Engineer Seyi Makinde of Social Democratic Party (SDP), have somewhat conceded defeat.

Meanwhile, it has been gathered that various interest groups including notable Ibadan indigenes and organizations are mounting pressure on Senator Ladoja to withdraw his petition from the tribunal for the sake of peace in the state.

At the inauguration sitting of the National and state Houses of Assembly election tribunal in the state, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice J.G Abunsaga said that the tribunal has received thirty-six petitions in respect of results of elections into the National Assembly and state house of Assembly in the state.

Breaking it down, Justice Abunsaga said that two and 10 petitions were received for senatorial election and House of Representatives respectively while 24 were for the state House of Assembly.

Seeking the cooperation of all the counsels in the matters disclosed that the panel would not exceed the 180 days stipulated by the nation’s constitution to wind up all the matters.

The judge also cautioned that the tribunal would not tolerate playing to the gallery by some counsels, stressing that, the tribunal would not tolerate any unnecessary adjournment to foot drag the matter.

“We shall be firm on all issues. Election petition tribunal is time bound. Every petition filed must be heard and dispensed with within the 180 days stipulated by the constitution of federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.”

Other two members of the tribunal are Justices G.C Nnamani and A.N Suleiman.

Responding on behalf of the counsels in the matters, Chief Richard Ogunwole, (SAN) assured the tribunal of the counsels’ maximum support.

He however charged the tribunal to impress it on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release necessary documents on request by the counsels.

“In as much as we are ready to cooperate with the tribunal, I believe there is need for the tribunal to impress it on the INEC and the REC on the need for them to release the documents in their custody. The papers are public property. Some of these documents were not released to some lawyers who have been there under the ground that their photocopy machines are not working. Since last Thursday, INEC has been closing its office. INEC wants to create a bottleneck. The documents are public documents. I don’t think INEC should take public holiday and lock up its office because time has started counting. INEC and the REC should take note and cooperate.”

Why Buhari Must Perform Miracles In Office – Labour Party

The Labour Party has asked President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, to place a ban on foreign medical treatment for public servants in his administration.

The National Chairman of LP, Alhaji Abdulkadir Salam, who stated this in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, also suggested that for Buhari to fight the anti-corruption war successfully, he must not spare “the first eleven”.

He said, “There are certain things that we expect Buhari to do urgently. Health is one, so that our people will not go abroad for treatment again. He can do it; he told us he can do it. We have the resources to do it. We have the material and human resources to do it. So, we believe he can do it if he wants to do it; this will reduce medical tourism in Nigeria.

“Nigerians are not ready to accept excuses from him”.

The LP chairman said during his campaigns across the country, the president-elect made Nigerians believe that he would completely turn around the affairs of the country in just few months.

While advising Buhari to lead according to the change mantra of his party, the All Progressives Congress, by not going abroad in search of medical treatment throughout his four-year term, Salam said the incoming president must improve all health facilities in the country to cope with the citizens’ health challenges.

Salam said, “Let me say here that Nigerians have given the APC the authority and the mandate to come out with the changes. APC people, who clamoured for change, told Nigerians they wanted change and campaigned on the platform and basis of change.

“Let nobody now begin to tell us that he cannot perform miracle, because they told Nigerians that when they come they would perform miracle. We will not expect Buhari to go abroad for any medical treatment. Our health system must be properly put in place. He must focus attention on it; let them not tell us that they cannot provide jobs for our teeming youths. Let them not tell us that the security lapses will continue in any manner, since they told us that they would perform miracle.

“Based on that change and miracle, Nigerians voted for them. So, in all spheres of human endeavour-education, health, agriculture, infrastructural development, power, energy and the rest-they should be able to satisfy Nigerians within a reasonable period”.

Labour Party Expresses Displeasure Over Defections, Calls APC A Party Of Intolerant Go-Getters

The Labour Party has frowned at the rate of defections into the All Progressives Congress, APC, since the party won the March 28 presidential election, arguing that the development was capable of turning the country into a one party state.

The party, in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by its National Secretary, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, said that since General Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner of the presidential election, unfolding events had shown that the party is a party of intolerant go-getters.

He said: “Events since the flag bearer of the APC was declared winner of the March 28 presidential election have shown that the APC is a party of intolerant go-getters, who would not brook opposing views, much less allow an opposition party to survive…”
