Police avert bloody clash in Kano State

Many vehicles were damaged on Wednesday in Kano following a clash between operatives of Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) and some illegal motor park operators at Gyadi-gyadi area in Kano metropolis.

 

A witness told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that the clash started around 11:00 a.m. when the KAROTA officials stormed the illegal motor park.

 

The witness said trouble started when the KAROTA officials wanted to stop the park operators, who were members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, from carrying passengers at the park.

 

It was gathered that many vehicles belonging to both parties were damaged during the fracas.

 

The timely arrival of armed police officers at the scene prevented what would have been a bloody clash between the two warring groups

 

Magaji Majiya, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the clash, saying that the command had since deployed officials to the area to restore peace and order.

 

“As I am talking to you now, we are at the scene and normalcy had since been restored in the area.

 

“No casualty was recorded, but a number of vehicles belonging to both sides were damaged,” Mr. Majiya, a deputy superintendent of police, said.

 

He said that the police had ordered immediate closure of the park until the issue was resolved between the state government and owners of the park.

 

He said the police had commenced investigation into the matter to find out the cause of the incident.

Procession: Shiite members must obtain police permit – Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that the members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, must obtain permit and obey police directives before embarking on street procession.

He stated that the Shiite members, who had been having a running battle with security agencies across the country, must recognize the authority of security officials by seeking their permission before holding any gathering.

Scores of Shiite members were gunned down by the police in Kano last week, during a procession, apart from about 300 allegedly killed by soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna State last December.

But Ganduje, who spoke in an interview with journalists on the sideline of the Nigeria Entrepreneurs Award on Friday in Abuja, insisted that the sect members, would not be allowed to break the law and tamper with the rights of other citizens.

He said, ” They (Shiite members) cannot keep breaking the law and tampering with the rights of other citizens.

“As far as they continue breaking the law, the police have to come in. They cannot use their freedom to do whatever they want because they are crossing other people’s human rights.

“As far as we are concerned, they have to recognise the authority of the security agencies, they have to get permission. If they do not get permission, then the police will not allow them to continue the procession that they do.”

Ganduje, who was presented with an award, Abuja, called for the promotion of  Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to enhance economic growth and ensure food sustainability in the country.

The governor said that the SMEs needed more attention than they were currently getting to promote the efforts of the Federal Government to diversify the economy.

Governor Ganduje Reaffirms Commitment To Completion Of Ongoing Projects.

Kano State government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure successful completion of the ongoing road projects within the period stipulated.

 

The State Commissioner Ministry of Land and Physical Planning Dr. Farouk Bibi Farouk gave the assurance while inspecting the ongoing road construction works at Lamido and Kingsgarden – Kwanar Tudun Wada road in Nassarawa Local Government Area.

 

Dr. Farouk disclosed that the administration of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje awarded the construction of 11 new roads project within the Metropolitan and some of these roads had reached completion stage.

 

The Commissioner, who expressed satisfaction with progress and quality of work so far achieved by contractor of Lamido road, assured people of the area that the road would be completed in the next few days.

 

He stressed that it was part of the present Administration commitment to be inspecting ongoing projects in order to ensure total compliance with contract agreement by contractors.

 

While inspecting the construction work of Kingsgarden -Kwanar Tudun Wada road , the Commissioner revealed that all compensations of structures have been paid and the project was achieving tremendous progress.

 

Earlier, the Managing Director Kano State Urban Planning and Development Agency (KNUPDA) Arch. Bashir Mudi noted that so far the Contractors were progression in line with the conditions agreed on in terms of quality and scope of the said projects.

Flood Kills 3, Destroys Cash Crops In Kano State

Three persons were killed while foodstuff and cash crops worth millions of Naira were washed away during a heavy down pour in Hayin Gwarmai village in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State on Sunday.

The Chairman of the Local Government, Alhaji Mudansiru Bebeji, told newsmen in Kano on Monday that the flood also washed away several farms in area.
Bebeji said a number of houses had also been destroyed during the disaster.

He said he had since paid a sympathy visit to the victims of the disaster and called on the Federal state governments to come to the aid of the victims to alleviate their sufferings. “We are calling on the Federal and Kano State governments to assist the victims to reduce their sufferings,” he said.

The Director, Operations, Kano State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SERERA), Alhaji Abdullahi Dambatta, said the agency had not received any official report on the incident from the local government council.

Dambatta, however, said as soon as the agency got the report it would forward same to the state government for necessary assistance to the victims.

Ese Oruru: Kano Govt. Dissociates Self From Girl’s Abduction

Kano State Government has dissociated itself from the reported abduction, forced marriage and conversion to Islam of one Ese Oruru from Bayelsa state since Aug. 2015.

 

A statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information, Youths and Sports, Malam Muhammed Garba, who condemned the whole episode, decried security agencies’ poor handling of the matter.

 

It added that although the state government was not aware of the incident, the directive of Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi, for the release of the girl should have been acted on.

 

It, therefore, ordered that the abductor be brought to book since the Constitution and Islamic teaching abhor abduction and forced marriage.

 

The statement further condemned any statement by anyone or group, linking the government with the matter in the social media, adding that the act was meant to tarnish the image of the state.

 

It stressed that the abductor was responsible for his action and should solely take responsibility for it, noting that the state has cordial relation with Bayelsa indigenes and the state.

The government enjoined indigenes of Kano state living in other parts of the country to live peacefully with their host communities and respect their ways of life.

The 14-year old Oruru was reportedly abducted and brought to Kano by one Yunusa Yellow, who converted her to Islam since Aug. 2015, without the consent of her parents.

Kano Govt. Procures Lassa Fever Drugs

The Kano State Government on Wednesday said it had procured some Lassa fever drugs and relevant equipment to combat the disease in the state.

 
Dr Kabiru Getso, the state Commissioner for Health, made the remark while fielding questions from reporters on the issue in Kano.

 
“As at now, we do not have any active case, but the state government has taken measures to check the spread of the disease,” he said.

 
Getso said that the state government had designated Yargaya Hospital in Dawakin Kudu local government area for the treatment and management of the disease, in case of any further outbreak.

 
“The state government has procured drugs and equipment needed to manage the cases, and we have provided an ambulance for quick response,” he said.

 
According to the commissioner, a hotline has also been dedicated for easy communication between communities and healthcare workers in the state.

 
The commissioner said that the government had constituted a high-powered committee to check the spread of the disease.

 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recall that two patients died at one of the hospitals in Kano early this month, as a result of the disease.

Ganduje Inspects Ongoing Projects In Kano

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has laid 1,000 millimetre water pipes, as part of efforts to supply water to areas where it has been scarce.

While supervising the exercise, the Governor said that his Government remained determined to ensure that water reaches all parts of the state.

 

The laying of additional water pipes in Kano State started during the administration of the immediate past governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, but could not be completed.

 

However, in fulfilment of his campaign promises, Governor Ganduje directed that all abandoned projects be completed, beginning with the most important, which is the supply of portable water.

 

Governor Ganduje also supervised the construction of the Oreology Hospital in Zoo road, Kano. The project also started during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau.

 

According to Governor Ganduje, his administration would continue to ensure the completion of both uncompleted and abandoned projects in Kano State. He stated his belief that continuity is the major source of sustainability in Governance.

 

The Governor urged Kano residents to continue to cooperate with contractors, in order to ensure timely completion of the projects.

 

He also warned the contractors against delay, emphasizing the need to deliver the projects awarded to them within the stipulated period of time.

Kano declares Wednesday public holiday in commemoration of the New Islamic Year 1437AH

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has declared tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th October, 2015, as a public holiday in Kano State in commemoration of the New Islamic Year 1437AH.

 

In a press release signed by his Director General, Media and Communications, Baba Halilu Dantiye, the governor congratulated the people of Kano and all the Muslim Umma for witnessing the New Year.

 

He also used the period to condole with the families of those who lost their lives in the two incidences in Saudi Arabia which led to the deaths of so many people and prayed for the quick recovery of those that sustained injuries.

 

Reassuring the people that the state government will continue to work hard towards improving the living standard of the people, the governor appealed that the public holiday be used in offering prayers, to God for peace and prosperity in the state and country as a whole.

 

 

Ganduje donates N80.5m to bomb blasts victims

Kano State Government has disbursed N80.5 million to victims and relations of those that were affected by bomb blasts at the Kano Central Mosque, Kwari Market and a filling station at Hotoro Quarters.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State distributed the cheques to beneficiaries on Sunday at Government House, Kano.

Ganduje said the victims identified by the State Government were 289, in which 139 died while 150 were injured.

“The donation today did not serve as a means of compensation, but to gather and pray for the souls of the victims.

“The amount disbursed today was also solely a support by the state government as a relief package for the families and victims of bomb blasts in the state ,’’ he said.

Mallam Ali Sani, who spoke on behalf of the victims and families of deceased persons, thanked the governor for the gesture.

Kano State Formulating Legislation To Halt Divorces

The Kano State has expressed concern at the breakdown of marriages in the region.

State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said as such, his administration would enact a law that will address such incidents.

He stated this during a meeting with Hisbah Guards, Vigilante Groups, Vehicles Inspection Officers (VIOs) and Civil Society Organizations at Coronation Hall in Government House.

The governor directed the state Hisbah Board to discuss the issue with Islamic scholars and other contemporary Islamic students with a view to advising government on how the law would be implemented from an Islamic perspective.

Ganduje lamented the increase of divorce cases in the state as worrisome and noted that government would take appropriate action to stop the menace. The governor appreciated the effort of Hisbah Guards in institutionalising Islamic tenets in the state and assured that his government would continue supporting them to work effectively.

Commander General, Hisbah Guards, Malam Aminu Daurawa, said over the years, the board had reconciled 20000 disputes, remarried 4 900 widows and facilitated 2 300 converts to Islam.

This has been recorded in the four years of his leadership.

Kano State Destroys 326,151 Bottles Of Beer

The Kano State Hisba Board said it had destroyed 326,151 bottles of beer out of the 363, 853 it confiscated from members of the public in the past three years.

This is contained in a statement issued in Kano on Saturday by the officer in charge of operation at the board, Alhaji Sani Nasidi.

The statement noted that the destruction of the illegal commodity was carried out in three phases within the period under review.

“In the first phase 42, 000 bottles were destroyed while in the second and third phases 40,000 and 244,151 bottles were destroyed respectively”, the statement said.

The statement indicated that there were a total of 197, 173 bottles of beer that were yet to be destroyed by the board.

“These remaining bottles of beer are being kept at some of the Local Government areas where they were impounded and they would be destroyed at a later date.

“But the other bottles of beer were destroyed at Hawan Kalibawa in Dawakin Tofa Local Government area of the state”, he said.

The statement explained that the special operations were carried out in collaboration with the eight Local Government Areas that make up Kano metropolis.

The statement, which commended other security agencies in the state for their support and cooperation with the board, called on them to maintain the tempo.

It, however, called on the state government to provide the board with the necessary facilities, particularly operational vehicles to enable it discharge its duties more effectively.
