Reports of Egbegbe stealing iPhones shameful – Actors Guild

The interim Chairman of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos chapter, Tope Babayemi on Friday said reports that movie director, Seun Egbegbe allegedly stole 9 iPhone was shameful.

Babayemi said the law must take its course if he is tried and found guilty.

“For me, it’s an example of bad practice and by extent it’s an example of the kind of thing we as a society are working hard to discourage.

“At the level of the guild and association, because we are not a hundred percent settled, there are court cases and issues at the national level that are affecting issues at the state chapters.

“My position as interim chairman is that no formal request has been made to us for assistance in anyway.

“As such what you do in that kind of situation is you allow the law to take its course, because law and order is paramount in building society.

“If he has been found to commit that offence, the law must take its course.’’

iPhone theft: This is not his first time, Seun Egbegbe must be prosecuted – Traders

After Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu’s ex-boyfriend, Seun Egbegbe refuted claims he was arrested or beaten up for stealing iPhones in Lagos, traders at the Computer Village in the state have further dragged his name in the mud, saying it was not the first time he would be involved in the act.

The Yoruba movie producer, who was almost mobbed on Tuesday for allegedly trying to steal nine iPhones, from a store,  is still cooling off in police custody.

A phone trader, Segun Akinola, at the computer village where the incident occurred, told newsmen on Wednesday that Egbegbe is known all over the famous computer village market for his alleged theft attitude.

“Although we learnt he is extremely influential and has the backing of Lagos Area boys and some unknown godfathers, justice must prevail.

“This is not the first time.

“Egbegbe has been entangled in a case like this but before things could get out of hand, everything got sorted.

“He has been involved in many of such cases without consequences, but this time?…” Akinola told newsmen.

Recall that the state Police had confirmed that Egbegbe was beaten by an angry mob for stealing and was detained at the Area F division.

Seun Egbegbe spends second day in police detention.

Despite releasing a statement denying he was neither arrested or beaten up for stealing iPhones, it has been revealed the Yoruba movie producer, Seun Egbegbe, is still in police custody.

Toyin Aimakhu’s former boyfriend, was mobbed on Tuesday for allegedly trying to steal nine iPhones, from a store in Computer Village in Lagos.

According to PUNCH Metro, the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni has visited the Area F Command, where Egbegbe is being detained and was briefed on the investigation.

A source said: “He (Egbegbe) is still in our custody. His associates have been debunking the allegation. He is still in detention. The CP even came to interrogate him this afternoon (Wednesday).”

She added that the public will be informed on the outcome of the investigation today (Thursday).

She said, “The case is still under investigation. We will properly brief the press on the stand of the command on the case by tomorrow (today).”

Commenting on the online statement, the PPRO, Dolapo Badmus said, “You are aware that he was arrested. If an online publication is saying he was not arrested, and the police said he was arrested, which one do you want to believe?”

Movie producer, Seun Egbegbe, denies stealing 10 iPhones.

About 24 hours after film producer, Seun Egbegbe, who is best known as the ex- lover of popular Yoruba actress, Toyin Aihmakhu, was arrested by the police for attempting to steal 10 iPhones from Computer Village in Lagos, he has denied the claims in a new statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES.

In the statement, Egbegbe, who came to public light following his whirlwind romance and dramatic split from Aihmakhu in May, denied being beaten to a pulp by a mob at the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Tuesday for allegedly stealing 10 iPhones at a shop in the area.

The Ebony Films boss also refuted viral reports that he was consequently handed over to the police at the Area F Command, Ikeja, Lagos.

Read his statement below:

My attention has been drawn to an online publication of the aforementioned. The story is pretty laughable and better left in the court of public opinion. Ordinarily, 1 do not want to join issues with the writer of the publication but I have a responsibility to set the records straight for my fans, friends and foes, in the defence of the truth.

To say the least, the news did not only grossly misinform unsuspecting public; it also portrays traces of campaign of calumny by some mercenary hirelings hell bent in destroying my name, for reasons best known to them.

Having read with keen interest the completely self-serving spirited attempt to destroy my person, it has become imperative and timely that a rejoinder is written to state the fact clearly. I want to state here categorically and emphatically that though I was at Computer Village to address some issues, but I was never arrested for stealing 10 iPhone 7s, as stated by the writer of the story, the matter has since been resolved by the Nigeria Police; and the issue of me stealing phone is devilish from the said writer.

Furthermore, It is rather unfortunate that the said writer will amount to cheap blackmail to deceive the unsuspecting public with a view of gaining cheap popularity.

It is germane to note that I am a charitable, humane, and grass root person, who has exhibited selflessness in communal service, which have used as a veritable tool for social development.

Finally, I wish to inform the general public to discard the report. I am presently at home relaxing!

Nigeria needs infrastructure, not iPhones – Adeosun tells donors, investors

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has informed multilateral donor institutions and investors that Nigeria is hungry for infrastructure that can trigger growth, not iPhones and pricey suits that will drive consumption.

Adeosun spoke Wednesday night at a session during the International Monetary Fund (IMF)/World Bank annual meetings in Washington D.C., saying investors must start to realise that western economies are matured and offer lower returns, while Africa with its infrastructure gap offers greater returns.

The minister made the remarks on the heels of the announcement by the IMF that it would offer zero interest rate on its concessional lending facility from 2016 to 2018 to Nigeria and other low-income economies that are in dire need of financial support to boost their economies and overcome challenges as a result of low commodity prices.

Adeosun said: “It seems very simple, in terms of what needs to be done. We are quite excited about negative interest rates. We like that you’re not earning any money.

“We are happy to take your money and give you very small positive interest rate. We think that the time has come, everyone is thinking out of the West, but there is nothing left in the West, everybody has to now come to Africa.

“But we don’t want investors to come to Africa to sell us iPhones and many expensive suits.

“We want to become productive, so we want this investment to come into infrastructure that will enable us to compete and really enable Africans to stay in Africa.”

She informed her audience that Nigeria has started a journey, which would take its economy from being dependent on oil as a primary commodity, to a more productive economy.

Adeosun said the economy had moved from spending 90 per cent of its budget on recurrent items and only 10 per cent on capital expenditure, to 70 per cent on recurrent expenditure and 30 per cent on capital expenditure.

“From the numbers that we have done, the infrastructure gap that we face, even if we devote our budget for the next three years, it is not enough, so we’ve got to look for creative ways to mobilise additional capital.

“We started of course with spending our own money (pension funds) because we think, of course, that the first thing we have to do is to re-establish some benchmarks, some ability to deliver on roads, on rails, on basic infrastructure,” she said.

According to her, Nigeria’s long-term plan is to mobilise private capital. “We think the narrative around who pays for infrastructure is a very important one in Africa. I say that because at the moment, if you don’t have infrastructure, you are going to pay anyway. If you spend six hours on a journey that should take you an hour, you’ve paid.

“So how do we convert that payment, which is currently informal and very painful, into a formal payment and therefore turn to a revenue stream that could attract investors, That is the challenge that we are working on now.

“As I have said, we are leading with our own money. We are looking at a regulatory framework that would enable investors to come in. We know it’s a new market and we are going to de-risk it.

“So what we are starting with are just infrastructure bonds that we guarantee, and then hopefully, when investors get an appetite for what the Nigerian infrastructure framework can provide them in terms of returns, we believe, we’d be able to remove some of the safeguards needed at the moment.

“We are hungry for infrastructure. We’ve got 170 million people who don’t have power in sufficient quantities, we don’t have a rail system, we don’t have a road structure, we believe that if we solve these infrastructure challenges, the entire productivity chain — agriculture, solid minerals, manufacturing, our unemployment problems — could all be solved.

“Our population is young; we have to provide a standard of living that keeps young vibrant Africans in Africa, because we think that is very important for eliminating poverty,” the minister stated.

Man Busted for Smuggling 94 iPhones Strapped to Body

Chinese customs officials on Sunday busted a Hong Kong man trying to sneak 94 iPhones into the mainland — by strapping them on his body.

The man caught the attention of inspectors at the Futian crossing in Shenzhen, a southern Chinese metropolis bordering Hong Kong, when he walked like someone carrying a heavy load despite appearing to travel light, customs officials told CNN on Tuesday.

After finding nothing suspicious in his two plastic shopping bags, officials asked the man to pass through a metal detector — and the alarm went off.
Photos released by customs authorities show dozens of neatly shrink-wrapped shiny iPhones strapped around the man’s chest, abdomen, crotch and thighs with duct tape.
Officials discovered both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S models and estimated the total value of the devices to exceed 300,000 yuan ($49,000).

The man — whose record revealed numerous previous run-ins with customs regulations — was held for further questioning.
