Fayose Berates Buhari Over Invasion Of Kwakwanso’s House

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has condemned Tuesday’s invasion and sealing off of the residence of a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, by armed policemen.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, on Wednesday, Fayose said the former governor’s residence was sealed off in order to prevent a mass wedding from taking place.

He alleged that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and its supporters had turned President Muhammadu Buhari into a dictator by keeping silent in the face of perceived undemocratic acts.

Fayose said, “The fact that Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso is of the ruling APC should worry well-meaning Nigerians because it appears no one will be spared by these anti-democracy agents that have taking over Nigeria.”

Explaining that the invasion of Kwakwanso’s house amounted to an infringement on the right of association, the governor said there was no law in the constitution stipulating Nigerians to obtain a police permit before holding a wedding.

He added, “When they invaded the Akwa Ibom State Government House with armed men of the Department of State Services, I raised the alarm then and I did warn that Nigeria was being returned to 1984 when President Buhari ruled the country like a maximum ruler.

“When I said Nigerians, irrespective of their political parties, should rise in condemnation of President Buhari’s emerging dictatorship, many of our friends in the APC opted to keep silent.

Some even hailed the DSS when it invaded the Ekiti State House of Assembly and abducted a member of the House.

“Last week Wednesday, when the police sealed off the venue of the Peoples Democratic’s Party National Convention in Port Harcourt and blocked the road leading to the Old Presidential Lodge of the Rivers State Government House where I and other PDP leaders were accommodated, our friends in the APC kept silent. Some even hailed the police.

“However, as a Nigerian and an ardent lover of democracy and the rule of law, I have elected to, once again, condemn yesterday’s armed policemen’s invasion and sealing off of the private residence of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and I hope that this time around, our friends in the APC will realise that no one will be spared by the time this emerging dictatorship reaches its peak.

“Nigerians should realize that with the bullying of Kwakwanso, a two-term governor, former minister of defence and serving senator, it is now very clear that the APC government will even be intolerant of opposition within the party, not to talk of external opposition. Men of good conscience should prevail on President Buhari to caution the security agencies to be mindful of foisting a tyranny on Nigerians.”

Reps Summon DSS Over Invasion Of Ekiti Assembly Complex

The House of Representatives has summoned the Director-General, Department of State Service (DSS) to appear before it within 48 hours to explain why the DSS invaded Ekiti House of Assembly.

The summon followed the unanimous adoption of a motion under matters of urgent public importance moved by House Minority Leader, Rep. Leo Ogor (PDP-Delta) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Members and staff of the Assembly scampered for safety when armed operatives of the DSS invaded the Assembly complex last week Friday.

Presenting the motion, Ogor decried the action, stressing that such interference violated the principle of separation of powers.

He said: “It is a clear violation of the provisions of the constitution; it is unacceptable as it demonstrates interference with an arm of government.

“If somebody violates the law and nothing is done, it gives him the privilege to move forward.

“Therefore, it is important that we summon the Director-General of the DSS to explain where the agency derives its powers to invade and destabilise the activities of the House.

“It is important to respect the rule of law and the sanctity of this institution must remain sacrosanct.’’

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara referred the matter to Committee on Public Safety and Intelligence for further legislative action.

Benin Republic Did Not Invade Nigerian villages, Says Baruten Council

The Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara on Friday debunked reports in some national dailies that Benin Republic had invaded about 16 communities in Kwara.

Malam Abdulrasheed Lafia, the council’s Vice Chairman, who is also the Chairman, Local Government Boundary Committee, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kosubosu.

Lafia said issues surrounding the disputed Ogomue land had been resolved since 2005.

Lafia stated that the National Boundary Commission, after members visited the site in 2004 along with officials of the state and local government boundary committees, resolved that the land actually belonged to Benin Republic.

According to him, the news report is a sponsored one as no such invasion or attack took place anywhere in the local government.

He warned against any misinformation that could create tension among the people of Nigeria as well as aid hostility between the two neighbouring and brotherly countries.

The vice-chairman, who availed NAN’s District Correspondent with a copy of the letter, said the news report was done to raise a false alarm.

The letter was dated Feb. 23, 2005, and addressed to Chairman of Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara from the State Government Boundary Committee in the Governor’s Office in Ilorin.

The reference number of the letter is KSGBC/C.V/T2/431 and signed by J.A Oriolowo, the Secretary, Kwara state Boundary Committee.

It is titled: Re: Alleged encroachment into Nigeria’s Territory by Benin Republic at the Illo Borgu sector (Shiya-Sandiro) of the Nigeria-Benin International Boundary.

It reads: “I wish to refer to your letter Ref. No BALG/S/LAN/4/1/92 of 23rd December, 2004 on the completion of the said structure situated after Moshi River along Shiya-Sandiro Road.

“….the Joint Team of Officials of National Boundary Commission, Kwara state Boundary Committee and Baruten Local Government Area, visited the site of the “Illegal Structured” on 26th October, 2004 for field verification.

“The reports of that Joint Field Survey have been released to Kwara state Government by the National Boundary Commission, Abuja.

“From the reports…., it was observed that River Moshi is the Natural Boundary in that area based on the 1960 Description of the International Boundary (ILLO/BORGU SECTOR) and that site of the said illegal structure is across the River and therefore in Benin Republic.

“You are also requested to note that by the above 1960 description of International Boundary (ILLO/BORGU SECTOR), which recognized River Moshi as the Natural Boundary between Nigeria and Benin Republic, any place West of the River Moshi is in Benin Republic while those places East of the River Moshi are in Nigeria.

“The disputed site along Shiya-Sandiro Road across River Moshi is therefore in Republic of Benin.

“In view of the above development, you are kindly requested to use your office to inform the Shiya Community and Okuta Emirate Council that the disputed site is in Benin Republic.

“The Kwara state government will also appreciate if the decision of the National Boundary Commission in this regard is obeyed to the letter by the entire people of Baruten Local Government Area.’’
