INEC will never compromise independence – official

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it will never compromise its independence but will consolidate on the mandate of conducting free, fair and credible elections.

INEC Director of Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja, while responding to allegations that the commission was compromising its independence.

It will be recalled that some Civil Society Organisations and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party recently accused INEC of complicity and compromising its independence.

Osaze-Uzzi said that most of the allegations levied against the commission was because the commission took decisions that were not in favour of the accusers.

Osaze-Uzzi said: “What we have always been doing is trying to assert our independence; trying to work in accordance with the laws. Sometimes this favours one set of people, sometimes it doesn’t.

“From our experience, when it doesn’t favour them they make some forms of allegations to undermine the commission, its integrity, its independence and try to bring it down in the eyes of the public.

“Ironically, some of the same people are accusing us of compromising our independence and calling on the president to call us to order.

“We are not under the direction or supervision of the president or any other person or authority, so, why should the same set of people be calling on the president to call us to order?’’

The director said that it was the same set of people accusing INEC of compromising its independence that wanted the commission’s to be compromised.

He said: “They are the ones asking the National Assembly and everybody to call us to order. If you read the constitution very well, we are not under the control of any body or institution.’’

Osaze-Uzzi said that INEC was maintaining its independence in accordance with the law of the land.

He stated: “We are trying to apply the laws and principles consistently.’’

On the call for the resignation of INEC Chairman over the alleged of complicity in the production of fake election result sheets in Ondo State, Osaze-Uzzi described it as “an absurdity’’.

He said that nobody not even the most of staff in the commission knew the security features of the result sheets, adding the entire allegation were ridiculous.

He said: “When you see people printing fake currency do you call on the central bank governor to resign?

“When you see people printing fake WAEC result sheets, do you hear people calling on the registrar to resign or people working in WAEC to resign that they are involved?’’

Independence: Governor El-Rufai pardons three prisoners

Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, has granted state pardon to three convicted prisoners in the state.

The compassion extended to the convicts was part of 2016 Independence Day anniversary.

The convicts have been granted amnesty and subsequently released.

Malam el-Rufai announced the pardons in his address to the residents of Kaduna State to mark the country’s 56th Independence anniversary.

This followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

“As is customary, we mark this day of liberation with a gesture of compassion,” the governor said.

“Following recommendations from the Advisory Council, I have therefore approved the release of three prisoners based on guidelines which include the convicts attaining the age of 60 with good conduct and convicts suffering from ill-health likely to lead to death. I have exercised powers conferred by Section 212 of the Constitution and endorsed the release orders for three convicts.”

The convicts, Mohammed Usmanand Hassan Saidu were left off on account of being over 60, good conduct and having only a little part of their sentence remaining.

Ill-health accounted for Zaro Dickson’s pardon, who has hypertension and diabetes.

Malam el-Rufai urged Nigerians to be confident that our country will overcome the current economic challenges.

He asked residents of Kaduna to continue to uphold peace and harmony, and to shun any recourse to self-help and vendetta.

To mark Independence Day, the Kaduna Golf Club staged the Governor’s Cup. Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Hadiza el-Rufai, performed the tee-off at the event which attracted golfers from across the country.

Gambo Hamza, Executive Secretary of the Kaduna Investment Promotion Agency (KADIPA), said that the golf event was organised to showcase Kaduna’s investment and tourism potentials.

Mrs. Hadiza el-Rufai also hosted an independence party for children. Staged within the grounds of the Government House, the party was attended by Malam Nasir el-Rufai, Mrs Ladi Bala, wife of deputy governor, Barnabas Yusuf Bala and Hajiya Rabi Abdusalam, the commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido and issued to Vanguard Thursday in Abuja.

The Minister enjoins all Nigerians to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his avowed determination to build a strong, virile and united country in line with the dream of the country’s founding fathers”, the statement added.

Buhari approves 56th independence anniversary programme

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the programme of events for the commemoration of Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary.

Bolaji Adebiyi, Director of Press in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF), said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Mr. Adebiyi said an interdenominational thanksgiving church service had been scheduled for September 25 at the National Worship Centre, Abuja at 4p.m.

A public lecture and Jumma’at prayers are slated for September 30 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively at the National Mosque, Abuja.

Jonathan Inaugurates Defence Radio 107.7FM

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday inaugurated the Armed Forces Radio, known as “Defence Radio 107.7 FM’’, with a call on Nigerians to appreciate the commitment and sacrifices of the armed forces.

The president said that the society had not shown much support to security personnel, adding that the trend should stop.

According to him, the radio station will help to enhance the operations of the military.

“Other nations even bring foreign media to cover some of their operations and things are exaggerated as if they even work harder than we do.

“So, today that we are launching your radio station will be a turning point, where some of our operations will be properly covered and Nigerians will know.

“If Nigerians know what you are doing and what you are passing through, Nigerians will remain grateful.

“And I use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians, both our senior citizens and ordinary citizens to appreciate the commitment and the sacrifices of our armed forces.

“We wouldn’t have been sleeping if these people are not working.

“I always feel a bit worried and sometimes angry when I read in the papers negative comments about our armed forces and the police.

“Ours is a society that sometimes doesn’t appreciate the commitment of individuals, the suffering of individuals.

“These people fight and some of them pay the supreme price, leaving widows and young children as orphans.’’

Jonathan said that instead of commending and encouraging members of the Armed Forces, Nigerians criticise them.

According to him, it is normal for the society to criticise, but it should show some level of respect for members of their security team.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to encourage the armed forces to do better.

He expressed gratitude to the military for establishing the radio station, saying it would enhance professionalism of officers and men.

“So today I am quite pleased that we are commissioning the radio station.

“I believe very sincerely, that with this radio station, ?especially when all the infrastructure is put in place, that the whole country will be covered.

“To help enhance the operations of the armed forces, to help to inform Nigerians about the activities of the armed forces and to make many more Nigerians to appreciate the activities of the armed forces.’’

Jonathan said that the neglect of the military in terms of hardware acquisition and relevant training in the past had compounded the security infrastructure.

This, he said, also affected the precision of military response to challenges.

The president, however, said that recent purchases of military hardware and support to the armed forces had reasonably changed the tide.

“These have indeed reversed the trend allowing for effective governance, peace and security in areas hitherto held by terrorists and other misguided elements.’’

Earler, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, said that the station was created to create a balance in the reportage of military activities in the country.

“The motivation for the establishment of the armed forces radio station was borne out of the increasing importance of the role of the media in military operations as well as recent experiences of the Nigerian Military in the war against terrorists in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

“The media as the watchdog of the society plays a very important role in shaping public opinion for or against any activity of government and its agencies, including the conduct of military operations.

“When employed positively, the media acts as a force multiplier for ongoing military operations.

“Objective media coverage of military operations not only encourages public awareness and support for the military during operations, it has the added benefit of keeping the families and friends of service men abreast of activities of troops no matter where they are deployed.

“This is invaluable in maintaining the morale of troops.’’

Badeh described as unfair and irresponsible some reportage of events in the North East.

According to him, terrorist acts are celebrated more than anything else which undermines the cohesiveness of the military.

He said that at a point, morale was so low that most troops lost the will to fight.

“Acts of cowardice by troops who fled from battle based on fabricated reasons were celebrated as virtue by certain media organisations.

“It got so bad that troops began to question why they would lay down their lives for a country and citizens that don’t appreciate their sacrifices.’’

The CDS solicited for more support from members of the public and thanked those who assisted in the establishment of the radio station.

Badeh assured that their efforts would not be in vain. (NAN)

Buhari Urged To Ensure Independence Of EFCC

Transparency Coalition of Nigeria (TCN) has appealed to the incoming administration to ensure the autonomy of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

TCN Secretary General, Peter Gimba, raised concern the anti-corruption agency was politically compromised. “The reasons for the establishment of the EFCC remains genuine and the case for the commission remains strong. However, the perceived use of the EFCC by the executive to muzzle or intimidate its real or perceived opponents into submission is a worrisome development that has diminished public confidence in the EFCC and raised questions about the government’s commitment to due process, accountability and transparency,” stated Gimba.

He added, “TCN therefore calls on the President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari to strengthen the EFCC and insulate it from political control, especially by those who seek to use the commission as a weapon of intimidation and blackmail targeted at political opponents.”

Gimba said currently, EFCC had been reduced to an agency that settles political scores.

“The use of pending EFCC cases in hate campaigns against perceived political opponents further contributes to the erosion of public confidence in the commission apart from the injury inflicted on the reputation of the affected individuals.

Scotland’s Independence Vote: World’s Salient Lesson by Vincent Anani

1scottish_2678776b

In two days from now specifically on the 18th of September, 2014 the existence of the United Kingdom will be threatened, it’s stability will be shaken to its very core as Scotland votes for Independence to bring an end to a relationship of staggering 307 years when the Union was formed in 1707 at the Treaty of York.

Modern Scottish Parliament sat for the first time in 1999. The Independence campaign has been long in the offing and in recent months, it gained momentum as the Scottish Parliament proposed a referendum to part ways with UK and makes Scotland an Independent nation. A ‘Yes’ vote will mean Scotland becomes an Independent country while for a ‘No’ vote, it remains part of Great Britain.

Recent polls have indicated a too-close to call vote with the results showing only very marginal split between the Better-Together supporters and We-Alone supporters; the vote can still go both ways.

Whichever way the vote swings by the 18th of September, there is salient lesson for Africa and the rest of the civilized world from the way and manner the campaign for Scotland’s Independence have been handled so far.

The world has advanced, nations have moved on and the most salient and thoughtful lesson in this Scotland’s Independence is the fact that Independence should not come by guns, wars and shedding of blood. It should come peacefully with simple understanding between the individual parties involved in the most civilized way possible. No killings, no genocide, no hate message propaganda, only the true will of the people should be peaceful obeyed.

A striking point to note is the way in which both sides have pursued its campaign- purely issued-based appealing to both reason and emotion of the people. Highlighting the advantages or disadvantages of self-governance, what they stand to gain or lose if they stay together or go their separate ways.

I watched Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech yesterday evening and I was moved beyond words, no threats, and simple coercion, clarification what is at stake going it alone and what Scotland stands to gain remaining part of the Union.

South Sudan’s Independence came at the cost of lives untold, years of bloodshed and war whose impact still haunt the country till today even after the much-desired independence. Closer to home, bits and pieces of the Biafran war still haunt our country till date albeit not so noticeable. Eastern Ukraine has not known peace for months because a region wants Independence.

Not that every region or part of a nation should wake up every now and then to demand for independence and self governance but when it arises, it should be dealt with simple understanding and common sense and in the most civilized way possible not with selfishness or the use of force.

For every desire of Independence, there are issues raised and for peaceful agreement and co-existence, these issues must be addressed the in the best way possible so no party feels slighted or cheated.

It is a very simple and salient lesson to the rest of the world, to all those that still live in the Stone Age and believes that everything is gotten by the use of force, the world has moved on. Territories are no longer taken through war; we now live in a modern world.

The United Kingdom is a truly a civilized nation and an example of which the rest of the world can emulate.
