Afenifere accuses Police of foul play in its handling of Ile-Ife communal clash

The pan-Yoruba socio political group, Afenifere, has accused the leadership of the police of being sectional in its approach to the crisis that erupted in Ile Ife, Osun State, between the Yoruba and Hausa Fulani ethnic group.

The group at the end of its monthly meeting in Akure, Ondo State capital, yesterday condemned the action of the police, especially the arrest of 20 Yoruba people. The group accused police of bias in the way they handled the matter.

It stressed that those arrested by the police over the crisis have been ridiculed, harassed and coerced while there was no single Hausa Fulani among those arrested and paraded at Abuja.

“We condemn unequivocally the attempts being made by the police high command to intimidate, harass, coerce, ridicule and dehumanize Yoruba elements in Ile Ife, who have been called suspects and who were arrested at Ile Ife.’’

But the group maintained that, “Those that have been criminalised by the police have not committed any treasonable felony or accused of any financial crime to warrant the Federal Government taking over the case and possible trial and eventual arraignment before the Federal High Court.

The group called on the police authorities to desist from adding ethnic colouration to the crisis.

Ethnic Clash: Businesses, offices, others resume normal activities in Ile-Ife

Normal commercial activities resumed on Monday in Ile-Ife in Osun, after a clash between the indigenes and the Hausas, which restricted the movement of many people for about two weeks.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that doors of banks as well as government offices, including shops and offices, which were locked since Wednesday, March 8, had been opened.

Everybody, including civil servants, now moved freely without being challenged by security agencies, as most barricades on the roads had been removed.

The situation was calm in Sabo and Lagere areas of the town where the crisis erupted.

The Hausas had resumed their businesses as usual with people moving freely around Sabo and Lagere areas.

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Ile-Ife, Isiaka Olatunbosun, said that his members were back to their commercial duty posts fully.

Mr. Olatunbosun appealed to all to “give peace a chance’’ across the city.

According to him, there is no gain in violence, as violence will disrupt the development of the town.

The Otun Babaloja of Ife Central, Jimoh Odeyemi, said the turnout of traders in the major market (Oja-Tuntun) was impressive, compared to the low turnout of traders and buyers recorded on Friday, March 17.

He commended the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni-In-Council and the state government for their efforts in bringing the crisis to an end and for re-opening markets for commercial activities to fully resume.

Also, the Otun Iyaloja, Ife Central, Falilat Lawal, called on the people to maintain peaceful coexistence.

Mrs. Lawal said that there was no disparity between the Hausas and the Yorubas, “for both had been living peacefully together for almost 200 years without violence’’.

She confirmed that peace had returned to the city and assured buyers and sellers to come to market for patronage.

Saheed Lawal, a Computer Operator at Lagere area, could not hide his feeling.

He appreciated God and the stakeholders who intervened in the crisis.

“I am not an Ife Indigene but I am from Ede. I was born in Ile-Ife. Ife people are loving, caring and accommodating, I strongly believe that the crisis emanated from the devil.

“For complete 13 days, I stayed indoor. I did not find it easy,

“I appeal to the people to exercise patience and allow dialogue rather than violence,’’ he said.

Titilayo Osotimehin, the Coordinating Director Osun-East Education District Office, Ile-Ife, told NAN that both public and private schools closed down due to Ife/Hausa crisis would be opened on Tuesday, March 21.

IFE CRISIS: Law must prevail – Osun HOA Speaker

Ile Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization was in the news for wrong reason few days ago, and it saddens me that the state of Osun which has hitherto witnessed peace and harmony would be reported to be in the news for flashpoint. It is quite embarrassing, and the pathetic situation calls for our deliberation with a view to preventing such ugly scenario in the future.
Let me commend Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his swift action which resulted to curfew and restoration of normalcy, and I hail the Great Ooni Ogunwusi for not only making his palace accessible to the Hausas, but also rose to the occasion while the fracas lasted. I must say that Kabiesi displayed the high sense of Yoruba value and tradition in handling the matter, to the extent that the Hausa people who fled to the palace were accommodated and secured.
I could understand that people, particularly of different tongues and traditions could differ on issues, and I must admit that the beauty of humanity is to treat our differences with respect and in the spirit of brotherliness, and that is who we are in Yoruba land, and that is what humanity demands from others who chose to cohabit with us. Besides, we belong to the same nation, and we are answerable to the same status-citizens of Nigeria. So, I could not find reason for a fight over issues that could be resolved by the law or traditional authority in the city.
It is a sad development, because people lost their lives in the fight, and any fracas that results to loss of lives should be seen as condemnable, for sanctity of life is an inalienable right of all manner of people, whether they speak our language or not. So, for desecrating the right to life, the hoodlums who unleashed terror in Ile Ife has challenged the essence of our constitution, and called to question the existential value of institutions of government, and that must be the basis for our action from this parliament.
I am of opinion that this parliament must constitute a fact finding committee that would investigate the crisis and report with recommendations to this assembly, for the following reasons:
1.    To determine whether it was interethnic clash between Yoruba and Hausa communities living in Sabo, Ile Ife;
2.    To determine whether some hoodlums seized the misunderstanding of some individuals to drag the entire city into chaos;
3.    To determine how swift the response of our security agencies before, during and after the mayhem;
4.    To determine whether the normalcy we have in that area now is real, or tentative; and
5.    To determine causes and effect of the interethnic relationship in the city of Ile Ife.
This parliament has assumed the role of mediator in so many crises, between the organs or branches of government; we have mediated between government and labour in the recent past, and we have settled issues for many groups like farmers and loggers. In that wise, we are in better position to do this one too, and we must not shirk our responsibility on it.
We could not tolerate lawlessness as lawgivers, and we will not subscribe to unruly behaviour of some unscrupulous people who trade in causing disharmony and chaos, and our response this time would send a signal to people with evil intention that we are state with rule of law.

Pandemonium as Hausa, Yoruba traders clash in Ile-Ife.

At least five people have been killed in a clash between Yoruba and Hausa traders in the Sabo area of Ile-Ife in Osun state.

A resident of the ancient city told TheCable that the situation started on Tuesday, but escalated on Wednesday morning.

Adeyeye Ogunwusi, ooni of Ife, reportedly intervened through seeking the assistance of security operatives.

The security agents deployed in the town were said to have foiled an attempt of aggrieved Yoruba residents to gain access into Sabo community, which is predominantly occupied by Hausa people.

The angry mob then stormed Lagere, a neighbouring community, and attacked Hausa traders there.

A witness said security agents found it difficult to control the rampaging mob.

Many have fled Ife as a result of the crisis, which has also led to the destruction of property worth millions of naira.

Some of the persons who sustained injuries have been taken to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) for medical attention.

The cause of the clash is not yet known.

Iyiola Omisore: “How can I be in Ile-Ife and kill Bola Ige in Ibadan?”

Iyiola Omisore, former deputy governor of Osun state, says the government has been begging him for falsely accusing him of killing Bola Ige, former attorney-general of the federation.

Omisore said his ordeal began in December 2001 when he was accused of involvement in the murder, and that he was subsequently impeached as deputy governor.

He said he had been discharged and acquitted in the case, and government had been begging him over charges of malicious  prosecution.

“When we were framed up that we killed Bola Ige, we thought it was a joke. How can somebody be in Ife and kill somebody in Ibadan? It was later they confessed that it was for politics,” he said in an interview.

“That was why I sued Oyo state government for N2 billion over malicious prosecution.

“We are still in court. They are dodging and begging me now. The judgement was very clear that we had no business in court at all.”

AD STARTED IN MY SUITE IN ABUJA WITH BOLA IGE AND ADESANYA

“We started AD. I was one of the persons funding AD in 1998. The party was formed in my suite at Nicon Hilton, Abuja. There is hardly any politician in the south-west that brought resources to politics than I did. I came into politics with my resources, wealth of experience, everything I had.”

“Omisore is more of a professional engineer, a technocrat. I have made more impact in engineering than any politician you can think of in this country today. I stand to be corrected. They want to kill that aspect of my life and play up politics.”

“Omisore’s political adventure follows a tradition that goes back to his background.

“We are the main Afenifere. We go to Owo every month. I am a man of history. My grandfather was part of Egbe Omo Oduduwa in 1941.

“So I am a part of that history. We were traditionally UPN (Unity Party of Nigeria) in the family. When it came to the time of AD, we were the ones doing Afenifere and AD together. It was Kofo Bucknor Akerele and I that gave it AD.

“We left PDP, that we were not joining them, to register another party. By the time we got to the INEC office, they had taken all the AAs. We wanted to have AA, AB, or AC. We wanted our name in front on the ballot. We wanted to tell voters, ‘Vote for number one.’ That was the idea behind AD.

“Chief Bola Ige, Baba Adesanya, and others said we should go and collect form. By the time we got there, the names given to us had already been taken. We said, let us take AD then, and we brought it back to them.”

Ooni Begins Free Health Service For People Of Ile-Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has launched a free health service scheme for the people of Ile Ife.

Ogunwusi urged the people of the town to make good use of the free health care services, saying that development cannot thrive in a town that has health challenges.

The monarch has also inaugurated seven commuter buses to ease transportation problems of the people of Ile Ife and its environs. The monarch, who partnered with Olofin Micro Finance Bank, Ile Ife, inaugurated the coastal buses, worth N56m which were assembled by Leyland Motor Company, in Ife on Thursday.

He used the occasion to appeal to Nigerians to patronise locally-made goods. This, he said, would encourage local manufacturers, create jobs and boost the economy.

The Managing Director of Olofin Micro Finance Bank, Mr. Toyin Olufolahan, said the buses cost N8m each.

He said the bank decided to partner the monarch in his bid to bring about economic transformation in Ile Ife.

Ooni Launches N60m Inter City Mass Transit Buses

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, on Thursday in Ife launched the N60 million “Olofin Adimula’’ inter city mass transit scheme.

In his speech at the occasion, the monarch said that the inter city mass transit buses were introduced to reduce transportation cost and the challenges faced by commuters.

He said that the buses would be managed by Olofin Microfinance Bank Ltd.

He commended Ife kingmakers and the people for selecting him as the new Oba and promised not to disappoint them.

The royal father promised that over 20, 000 widows and some youths of the town would be empowered.

He commended the management of the Microfinance Bank for collaborating with him to introduce the mass transit scheme to reduce the cost of transport.

Oba Ogunwusi assured members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other transport unions that his regime would not inflict pains on them.

He explained that the mass transit scheme was introduced to reduce cost of transport and urged the people to patronise made-in-Nigeria goods to boost the economy.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director, Olofin Micro Finance Bank, Mr Toyin Olufolahan, said that the mass transit scheme would generate thousand of jobs.

He said that the Ooni and the management of the bank had also organised free health scheme for Ife indigenes at government hospitals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the buses would carry passengers from Ife to Lagos, Port Harcourt, Delta, Abuja, Kano among other cities in Nigeria.

Tension In Ile-Ife Over Selection Of Ooni’s Deputy

There was tension in Ile-Ife, Osun State, yesterday in the ongoing screening of candidates for the selection of Obalufe of Ife as deputy to Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye, Enitan Ogunwusi.

The position became vacant after the demise of the late Obalufe, Oba Solomon Omisakin in 2015.

Obalufe is the traditional ruler of Iremo, in Ile-Ife; head of Ife kingmakers and next in command to the Ooni in hierarchy according to the tradition of the town.

The process of selecting a new Obalufe started with the inauguration of a committee under the chairmanship of Ayoola Olafiranye.

Daily Sun gathered that the committee was saddled with the responsibility of screening all the 10 contenders from the Aga Ruling House for the stool and report its findings to the house.

The committee reportedly invited all the aspirants and screened them but, before it could submit its reports, majority of the contenders accused it of planning to announce the name of an aspirant, Elu Abayomi, from the female lineage. They insisted Abayomi is not qualified to contest.

This led to rancour by the supporters of the contenders who threatened to shut down the town if Abayomi, allegedly preferred by the committee, was announced as planned.

A traditional chief in Ife, Atimi Bada, the Logun Apata of Ile-Ife told Daily Sun that the contenders for the vacant stool must come from a male lineage and that those from the female lineage could only contest only if there was no competent candidate from the male lineage.

Honesty, Integrity, Hardwork; The Virtues Of Yoruba Race – Osinbajo

The Vice-President (VP) of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday identified honesty, integrity, and hard work as integral attributes of the Yoruba race.

Osinbajo said this in Ile-Ife during the coronation of the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, as the 51st Ooni of Ife.

He described events, such as the coronation, as rare and very historic in all ramifications, especially to the people of Ile-Ife and the entire Yoruba race.

The VP also used the occasion to remind the new Ooni of the great responsibility before him.

“The stool of Ooni is revered and deeply important to the Yoruba race and the Ooni remains the father to all.

“And as a father to all, you have the primary responsibility of carrying the responsibility of the people.

“We are indeed grateful to God for affording us the opportunity to celebrate with pump and pageantry,” he said.
