Terrorists Now Disguise As Vigilantes And Hunters- DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ, has alerted members of the public that the Boko Haram terrorists in the North Eastern part of the country now disguise as vigilantes popularly known as the Civilian JTF and hunters to carry out their activities.

The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, stated on Monday that following the coordinated military offensive against the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in Sambisa forest, the fleeing felons now disguise as vigilantes or hunters to evade easy detection.

Abubakar said that the terrorists, “after being smoked out of Sambisa forest, in their desperation to wreak havoc on innocent Nigerians and to remain relevant, devised a new tactics of dressing like vigilantes or hunters to deceive unsuspecting members of the public of their true identity”.

He noted the case of Kuda-Kaya village in Madagali community of Adamawa State where a group of Boko Haram terrorists, dressed like vigilantes, opened fire on elated people during a ceremony readily comes to mind.

In response to this, the Defence spokesman advised the general public to be wary of unsubscribed services or presence of vigilantes or hunters in their neighbourhood in order not to ignorantly harbour killer gang in their midst.

“Members of the public are also advised to be security conscious, at all times, and report promptly to security agencies of any suspicious persons or group of persons in their community or raise alarm, where necessary,” he said.

10,000 Hunters Gather, Seek Clearance To Confront Boko Haram In Sambisa Forest

An estimated 10,000 local hunters from the North-east of Nigeria gathered recently in Adamawa State for their annual oath-taking festival, known as Salala in the local parlance.

The hunters, dressed in their warfare attires, and with their Dane guns dangling over their shoulders, vowed to rid the society of criminals.

They appealed to the government to make use of their members in the fight against terrorism and other social vices.

The leader of the hunters in Adamawa, Muhammad Tola, who claimed the hunters had so far played significant roles in the fight against Boko Haram, said hunters were familiar with the terrain in dreaded forests, like the Sambisa forest.

“We are ready to pursue the terrorists because we know the terrain very well,” Mr. Tola said.

“We are appealing to the military authorities to allow us join the fight against Boko Haram at the Sambisa forest.”

Mr. Tola said the hunters needed the government to assist them with ammunition, transportation and logistics.

He said the government could also enlist young hunters who were willing to join the army, police, and other security agencies.

“We remain one big family devoid of religious or tribal sentiments, that is why you can see over 10,000 hunters from Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Yoba and Adamawa converged for this epoch-making event,” Mr. Tola said.

Female hunters also participated in the Salala festival.

Borno Hunters Seek To Join Military Against B’Haram

Hunters in Borno State on Sunday called on the military to allow them to join in the war against insurgents in Sambisa Forest, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The king of the Hunters, Mallam Mai-Gana Mai-Durma, made the appeal in Maiduguri while addressing newsmen.

Mai-Durma said the call became imperative because the hunters were familiar with the terrain of the dreaded forest, said to be the hideout and operational base of the terrorists.

“We are appealing to the military authorities to allow us join the fight against Boko Haram at the Sambisa Forest.

“We are ready to pursue the terrorists because we know the terrain very well,’’ Mai-Durma said.

He believed that the military should align them with members of the vigilance group, popularly known as the Civilian JTF, for effective result.

“We will overrun Sambisa in partnership with members of the civilian JTF if given the opportunity.

“This will help to complement the effort of military in the anti-terrorism operation,’’ Mai-Durma said.

He lamented that hunters from the 27 local government areas of the state had been rendered idle by the Boko Haram terrorism.

“Hunters from all the 27 Borno LGAs are all in Maiduguri with our leaders doing nothing at present because of Boko Haram.

“Rather than idling away, we will want to assist the military in crushing Boko Haram terrorists,’’ Mai-Durma said.

He appealed to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai, to assist in forwarding the request to the military authorities for consideration.

German Hunter Kills Biggest Elephant In Africa, Months After Cecil The Lion Was Slain

One of the biggest elephants in Africa has been killed by a Western hunter in Zimbabwe, less than three months after Cecil the Lion was shot dead.

The elephant – thought to be the largest killed in the country for more than 30 years -was shot on October 8th. Its huge tusks weighed 122 pounds and the German hunter reportedly paid £39,000 for a
hunting permit to shoot the bull elephant as part of an organised hunt at Gonarezhou National Park in south-east Zimbabwe.

Images of the elephant, with the hunter and a man believed to be his guide, were shared on social
media.

The elephant, thought to be in its mid-40s, is as yet unidentified but Rodrigues believes it may have come from the Kruger Park in South Africa.

Kruger spokesman William Mabasa told Telegraph newspaper:

“If this elephant came up from the Kruger, he would have had to go through all the communities on the edge of Gonarezhou and someon would have seen him. It’s not possible.
“The most disappointing thing is that when a local Zimbabwean kills an animal for food for his family, he is sentenced to between 5 and 15 years in prison but when a wealthy foreign hunter comes in and shoots an animal, he gets away with it. What message are we giving the people?”

The shooting comes as it emerged the American dentist who killed Cecil will NOT face charges , because authorities say he had legal authority to hunt the animal.

Walter Palmer incurred the wrath of animal-lovers worldwide in July, became the subject of a global backlash after he shot the beast during a hunt in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. But it has now emerged that the 55-year-old will not be charged because he had obtained legal authority to hunt the animal and his papers were ‘in order’.

Cecil the lion , known for his striking black mane, was a famous fixture in the park and had been fitted with a GPS collar as part of Oxford University research.

Palmer admitted to shooting the big cat with an arrow from a compound bow outside the park’s borders. Cecil didn’t die immediately and conservationists claimed the wounded animal could have wandered for up to 40 hours before being tracked down and killed.
