Arrested Metuh On Hunger Strike Over Food Poisoning Scare– Family

Olisa Metuh’s family has denied that the spokesperson of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, received N1.4 billion from the office of the National Security Adviser.

Mr. Metuh was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, on allegations of corruption, and remained in detention by Wednesday evening.

In a statement signed by Gilbert Metuh, Wednesday, the family demanded that Mr. Metuh be released or charged to court.

The statement said the PDP spokesman acknowledged he delivered on an assignment for former President Goodluck Jonathan, and was duly paid.

The family said Mr. Metuh has refused to eat in detention over fears he might be poisoned.

“Our biggest concern for now is the health and safety of our son, who even before his arrest had alerted the nation about various threats to his life, a stance that is not unconnected to his position as the spokesperson of the opposition,” the statement said.

“Our position is more so as he has refused to eat following fears of intentions to poison him in detention.”

Guinea Hunger Strike at Village Occupation after Ebola Worker Killings

A hunger strike has been launched in Guinea in protest against the military’s presence in a village where an Ebola awareness team was killed in September.

About 20 leaders from the southern Wome village are camping outside parliament since launching the strike. The “military occupation” of Wome had forced some 6,000 people to flee their homes, an opposition leader said. The government and military have not commented on the allegations.

In September, the government accused villagers of murdering eight people raising awareness about Ebola.

Some of the bodies – of health workers, local officials and journalists – were found in a septic tank in Wome some 50km (30 miles) from the south-eastern city of Nzerekore.

The motive for the attack was not clear, but it came at a time when many communities either denied the existence of Ebola or accused health workers of spreading the virus.

Egyptians on Hunger Strike

A growing movement of hunger strikers calling for the release of detainees jailed under a controversial Protest Law, is gaining grounds in Egypt.

Several political parties and journalists began the symbolic nationwide hunger strike on Saturday to demand the release of detainees held for violating a law enacted last year that has been criticized by both domestic and international human rights groups, as well as prominent political figures, as curtailing peoples’ right to protest.
