Shocker: 9,579 Persons Tested HIV Positive In Lagos

No fewer than 9, 579 people were tested positive to HIV of the 616, 318 that attended the HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) awareness programme from January to June, 2016.

Dr Oluseyi Temowo, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), made this known on Wednesday in Lagos.

Temowo spoke at a news conference in Ikeja to mark the 2016 World AIDS Day with the theme: “Hands Up for #HIV Prevention’’.

United Nations had in 1988 declared every Dec.1 as the World AIDS Day. This is to honour AIDS victims and focus on issues surrounding HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).

Temowo said that in 2015, a total number of 599, 560 people were counselled, tested and received results out of which 15, 311 people were found to be positive. The LSACA chief said that 52, 803 people living with the scourge were currently on Antiretrovirals (ARVs).

“These statistics simply means that there are many more people who are not aware that they have the virus, that is why knowing one’s status is very important.

“It is a common knowledge that an HIV positive person can be symptom free for 10 years and will continue to infect others, if not checked and treated. “Being HIV positive does not translate to death with appropriate medications,” he said.

Temowo said that the agency had mobilised its HCT trucks to all the nooks and crannies of the state to conduct free HIV counselling and testing.

This, he said, would enable every Lagos resident to be aware of his or her health status. Temowo said that access to HCT would allow individuals to know their status and take appropriate steps to prevent the transmission to other people.

He said that this would also stop the progression to AIDS through lifestyle modification and health seeking behaviour.

According to him, this is geared toward achieving the eradication of the virus by 2030.

“Achieving AIDS free generation requires collective efforts, this is why we are calling on government at all levels, individuals and organisations to join us in this quest to make Lagos State an HIV Free Zone.

“We implore residents to visit all government hospitals within their areas to access free HCT, while HCT trucks will move around to reach other areas for this purpose.

“We also advise people to ensure these various means of prevention- condom use, harm reduction, voluntary medical male circumcision, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, counselling and testing,” he said.

Women’s Brains Are Sharper Than Men’s In Old Age – New Study

Women’s brains age better than men’s but their bodies do not cope as well, research suggests. Even though female life expectancy has increased over the past 20 years, elderly women spend less time with memory problems than they did, a study shows.

The unexpected finding goes against most predictions, which would expect rates of dementia to increase as people live for longer. The same trend, however, was not seen among men, whose total time spent in a state of ‘mild cognitive impairment’ increased slightly.

Last night experts said they could not definitively explain their findings but they suspect that the vast improvements in education for women may be behind the trend.

Rosecollette I. Uzomba: Breaking From Emotional Depression; The Tale Of A Survivor

“I knew I was slipping when months ago, I considered stuff I wouldn’t even give a second thought. I went through a crisis that saw me spiraling down in fast motion. I made decisions that at the time seemed imperturbable. No one in my family or amongst my friends knew what I was going through at the time. I was strong on the outside but inside a ravaging fire was carting my soul away. I smiled, laughed, went for social gatherings, attended church services and was supposedly pretty normal. I knew I had to talk to someone, I knew I had to take a breather but each time I tried I went back deeper. Spoke to a friend once or twice but he clearly didn’t get the message because really I couldn’t even communicate what I was going through. I felt like I was on this high and I could just let the moment carry me as I voyaged to a world of oblivion.

Count down to two weeks ago, the walls came crashing in me and felt I was going to die of emotional and psychological suffocation. I knew I had to talk to someone. Someone I could trust, someone who knew who I was. I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I wasn’t prepared for the effect the decision would have on me. I thought I was messed up, but I was screwed. I have never been one to get depressed all my life but I didn’t just get depressed, I became suicidal. Wow! Yeah I didn’t believe it myself. I battled the strong urge of doing bodily harm to myself so it could divert my mind away from the pain and hurt I was experiencing. Saving grace was a dear long friend who never left my side. He reminded me who I was, convinced me I could be better and most of all love me even when I felt like the worst person on earth.

And then it happened, like a thunder bolt I was jolted to a celestial realization that I mustn’t stay down. Waves of strong emotions overtook me, I prayed and I wept my heart out. First I had to believe God still loves me and secondly I had to forgive myself. I looked in the mirror and said to me, “You are better than this shit. Don’t stay down, you can win this”. I had the redemption I sought for and I had never felt better. Still a work in progress but I am certain I will get there one day at a time”.

You see the world is not an easy place for weak people. You are going to mess up real bad, you are going to be mud splashed, ridiculed, cheated on, abused, and many other things but these things don’t define you. What defines you is how you handle these situations. You either let it break you until you are down and out or you break through it and claim victory. I keep saying this; people are going through so much that you have no idea of. It’s a crazy world out there.

Whoever you are, whatever you might be going through, don’t stay down. It’s going to get rough, tough decisions would be made, your heart will break into a thousand pieces, you would hate the image of you in the mirror, you would cry yourself to sleep, but don’t stop there. Break through it. When you realize that you deserve better, that would be a stepping stone to the best decisions of your life. Don’t care a tad what others think about you, what you have done or are passing through might be terrible and you feel like the worst person. People have done and gone through worse. Nobody is perfect, we slip now and then, and that’s life. The greatest defeat would be giving up on you. You can be better. Failure is temporal, giving up is permanent. Don’t let that be you.

Sex Between Humans And Robots May Soon Become Real

Would YOU have sex with a robot? Experts claim it will be a norm in the next 50 years.

Pictured above is android Anita from Channel 4 drama Humans, who at one point in the drama is used as a sex bot by a married man, causing problems in the marriage. The sex scene between the man and her shocked audiences.

According to academic Dr Helen Driscoll, a sex psychologist, in a blog post for the Huffington Post, humans spend more time in virtual realities – including online gaming and social media. And our physical relationships will come to be seen as primitive in the near future as humanity embraces machines as partners.
Sex mannequins that you can order online already exist, and rapid advances in technology will enable them to ‘come to life’. Robophilia – the word for a sexual attraction to robots – seems like an alien concept to us now, but could become the norm as our attitudes catch up to the technology.

‘As virtual reality becomes more realistic and immersive and is able to mimic and even improve on the experience of sex with a human partner, it is conceivable that some will choose this in preference to sex with a less than perfect human being,’ said Dr Driscoll.

In addition to having physical relationships with machines, advances in artificial intelligence could enable machines or even computer programs to become realistic enough to fall in love with.
This was explored in the 2013 film Her, which saw Joaquin Phoenix’s character fall in love with a Siri-like operating system.

‘This may seem shocking and unusual now, but we should not automatically assume that virtual relationships have less value than real relationships,’ wrote Dr Driscoll.

Dr Driscoll points to people who have lost their partner or who live alone as people who might benefit psychologically from a virtual sexual relationship.

‘After all a virtual partner is surely better than no partner at all.’

Virtual affairs could also present a problem in the future, with some partners seeing sex with a machine as similar to sex with another person, according to Dr Driscoll.

The amount of time we spend online – communicating via emails and social media – is already a problem for some people, but our relationships with other humans could soon be conducted entirely online.
As we spend more time in virtual reality and living alone, this will lead to increased mental health problems, according to Dr Driscoll.

The lack of human contact is currently harmful, as humans are social animals and isolation is linked with mental health problems, she said.

Recent studies have shown that young Japanese people are already avoiding sex and intimate relationships, with half of Japanese adults saying they no longer have sex.

And earlier in August, a Chinese ‘girlfriend app’ called Xiaoice was reported to be keeping thousands of heartbroken people company. People can add her as a friend on several major Chinese social networking services including Weibo, a Twitter like microblogging service used by 700 million people, and Touchpal.

This trend may seem like a problematic trend now, but as the technology improves the isolation issues will disappear as it becomes harder to tell the difference between artificial intelligence and machines, according to Dr Driscoll.

‘When eventually there are intelligent robots indistinguishable from humans – apart from their lack of bad habits, imperfections and need for investment – not only are we likely to choose them over ‘real’ humans but psychologically we will not suffer if we are not able to tell the difference.’

Caitlyn Jenner Visits Her Plastic Surgeon

Many may not agree with her transformation from a man to woman, however, majority can’t deny the plastic surgeon did a spectacular job..The 65 year old paid a visit to Dr. Harrison H. Lee, with a personalised copy of her Vanity Fair feature.

‘To Harrison, Great Job Thank you so much Caitlyn Jenner,’ she wrote on the cover.

Lee’s specialty is facial feminization for male to female transgender patients. He told the Daily News that though honored to work with Jenner he was a little nervous

‘I entered with some trepidation of course,’ he said. ‘I figured it was gonna be very challenging because of her celebrity status and the fact that she’s going to finally expose herself for (who) she is, and it’ll be one of the most judged faces on the planet.’
